Children's Weaving on Cardboard Looms

avatar

I am helping with grandchildren for a few days. Yesterday was fun time with my art supplies. Today I brought out the yarn, looms, and needles.

I got sturdy, thick cardboard looms with notches already made from a school art supply catalog. You could make your own with boxes and a sharp knife. I showed them how to warp (just wrap the yarn around and be sure to pass through the notches) and threaded their needles. The girls are doing pretty well with the over and under pattern of plain weaving. Do you like their color choices?

Teach children needlework and they will always have something productive to do. Different sizes of looms can make coasters, table mats, purses, belts and more

I remember doing this in school and loving it. It was just so fascinating to see how fabric can come together and to realise I was creating it myself.

Hi @fiberfrau

Excellent these looms, they are easy to make and a great activity to keep the kids doing something productive. I had the opportunity to make a little bag recently using some looms, and I thought it looked wonderful.

The colors you have chosen are a good combination.

Thanks for sharing.

Regards

The weaving looks great! What are they making? :D

The boys know how to sew enough to repair things (youngest still learning), my daughter does know how to sew (despite claiming she doesn't when she's asking me to repair things for her XD) and is also relearning how to knit and she told me she bought crochet hooks so I guess that's on the agenda as well :)

Good for your children! My grandson was weaving along with his sisters. These first projects are just coasters or table mats. If they still have this enthusiasm when I visit next month, we will need to make bigger looms. !BBH
