Pocket Shawl for My Sister

I don't usually work with super bulky yarn, but my sister Lorie lives in a cold part of the country and really wanted a large shawl with pockets. She has long limbs, too, so I am making it longer than the pattern measurements.

One issue I have had working with this heavy yarn is that my hands tire more quickly than usual (larger/heavier hook and bigger motions with each stitch.) To help with the fatigue, I got a cushion to place over my regular aluminum hook. That has certainly helped me get in more rows per day before I need to rest my hands.

I am using a K crochet hook (6.5mm) and Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. The stitches are hdc and crossed dc. I'm using a pattern I purchased and downloaded from etsy, although my sister does not want fringe. She also wants a less open fabric, so I am working at a tighter gauge by using a smaller hook than recommended. I hope to show a finished shawl sometime soon. Lorie should be quite cozy next winter!

Ilike the color of the yarn. That is going to be so cozy. Can't wait to see the shawl.

I'm just over halfway through and it is heavy! It outgrew my knitting bag a few rows back.

Oh Wow, @fiberfrau! That is big and heavy. How is that cushion on the crochet hook working? Does it help with comfort when you're crocheting for a long time? Hope it does.
Have a great day! 😀

I feel you... big needles or hooks are very tiering on the fingers. Especially the crochet hooks which are made from plastic add so much friction it is hard to pull them through the yarn.
But the yarn for the shawl looks lovely <3

My sister picked the yarn and shipped it to me. I'll give her the finished shawl when I visit in the spring.

Update: Heading to the shop to pick up their last 2 balls of Thick and Quick in Hudson Bay color scheme. Bulky yarn really eats up yardage. This should finally be enough. Fingers crossed... I have already held back 2 balls for the final border, since that is how much the first border took.
