FInished Fence, Cut Down Tree, Predator, Re-Fort Knoxed Bird Hut, Trailer, Fire, Grilling - Thursday

Yesterday was my day to get the fence up and let the dog explore his new area. It has been a on time coming and finally he has acres to roam.

9 pounds of squash were ready and slowly the rest of the plants are starting to get big enough to produce.

The turkeys are rather funny. They wander up to the fence and stare into the yard longingly. Jax will nose at them and tends to keep them at bay. They haven't tried getting in yet...

Mid morning I headed up the hill with my bucket of tools and began to roll out the fence.

IMG_20220714_104007_HDR.jpg

I used my logging cinch on a tree downhill and the come along on the other end. I used a barbed wire puller to attach to the bottom wire of the fence and ratchet it good and tight. I ended up setting it up 3 times to tighten the fence on the way down the hillside.

Having cleared the path for the fence and with the posts all in it didn't take me a terribly long time to get the fence up. This is about halfway down the hill after the second tensioning.

It took me an hour to get the fence unrolled down to the bottom of the hill. I setup the come along for the final time and pulled the fence good and tight. I had to do a little work around a couple trees to get the wire to sit close enough to the ground but I managed to get the entire fence good and tight.

I cut the excess left of the roll which was a bit less than I had thought I would have left. I will be cutting a board to use for the gate but for now the fence is just hooked on the other fence to keep it closed.

Next I had to put up the fences to keep the dog from going in the gardens, one by the strawberries and the other into the cool garden. Once they were up Jax got to go roam the hillside. I sent R up the hill with him to get him to try and explore but he doesn't understand that he is free to roam yet. It will take a number of times of us taking him before he will really get it I think.

While working my way down the hill putting the fence up I was looking at a bunch of trees that I want to cut down. After a short break after the fence install I grabbed the chainsaw and headed to the base of the hill and took down a 30 foot tall fir tree.

It is in the way of another tree that I have to cut down and I also didn't want it growing to shade my garden. I bucked it and left it lying for the boys to work on hauling to the yard. Just one of the many trees I will be cutting up.

In the early morning Jax had been freaking out and it woke @stryeyz up but not me. I found out what the problem was. Apparently a predator drug a barred rock rooster out of the pallet hut and ate part of it nearby. I had been meaning to get the hut moved and this just forced my hand.

IMG_20220714_143805_HDR.jpg

I had to pull the whole thing apart and move it to make room for dropping a tree and to make the chicken area a bit more concise.

IMG_20220714_143816_HDR.jpg

There were some bushes in the way of where I wanted to put the hut so I wrapped both with a rope and used my truck to yank them out of the ground.

IMG_20220714_144116_HDR.jpg

The bushes got chucked into the sheep pen where they jumped on them and started munching away.

IMG_20220714_144735_HDR.jpg

Once I pulled the bushes out I hooked my trailer up for the grain run I have already done this morning.

IMG_20220714_144741_HDR.jpg

The hut got rebuilt out of the pallets and I used deck screws this time to hold it all together. They are much stronger and less likely to break like the sheetrock screws I had used prior.

IMG_20220714_151716_HDR.jpg

I tacked heavier plastic up on the back to reduce rain influx and to deaden some wind flow.

IMG_20220714_153735_HDR.jpg

Then I grabbed a piece of aluminum sheet that had been on the deck roof of the studio. It was the perfect length to cover the top of the back pallet and to close up possible entry points for predators.

IMG_20220714_154548_HDR.jpg

I screwed it to the pallet pounded it over and folded it around the pallet. I screwed it down across the face and it did a great job of covering.

IMG_20220714_154853_HDR.jpg

The entire thing is wrapped in the fence that fits perfectly. I stapled the fence to the structure then went around cleaning up.

I placed the big panels so that I can open them to drive through and the fence line runs to them with more than enough space.

I had the boys get a fire going in the pit for the afternoon.

IMG_20220714_164707_HDR.jpg

After our hike up the hill to show @stryeyz the new fenced in area I got burgers on to grill then the buns got toasted on the fire.

J thought popping the balloon of his paper mache would be eventful but it was the exact opposite. All that happened was the end opened and the balloon stayed stuck to the inside of the paper mache. His goal is a pinata.

After my highly needed shower the soak felt really good after the long day of work.

Putting the birds to bed was an adventure. With the hut moved all the birds were acting lost, despite it being a whole 10 feet from where it had been. I ended up having to carry most of the turkeys to the hut and of course I got a healthy scratch that needed a wrap for the night. It bled a little still this morning but has stopped now.

IMG_20220714_215807_HDR.jpg

I have been to town for grain already and will head out to empty it soon. We have a thunderstorm rolling over right now that dropped some huge rain drops for a bit. This afternoon is @stryeyz company's 100 year anniversary party that I will be going to.

I live vicariously through your posts - Can't wait to move from where we are and start a family farm.

We want bees, produce, fungi and weed and to rehab animals :)
