Grain Run, Weeding, Plants, Transplants, Heat, Beans, Manicure, Chainsaw Work - Tuesday

Yesterday was the hot day for the week and even first thing in the morning it was rather warm. I managed to get myself out of the house by 5am and headed to town for grain. On the downhill slide of summer the light will only be getting higher on the stacks and soon won't even be hitting it when I am picking up the grain.

I had 3 barrels to pickup and 4 empties to drop off for their brew today. I stopped and dropped the single empty at the smaller brewery who has another barrel for me to pickup tomorrow. The light was green so I jumped in the truck without getting a pic.

The Theracane did a pretty good job of working the sore spot on my hip/back since the jets just didn't hit it right. The ibuprofen helped the most.

I backed the trailer into the sheep pen and went to dump the barrels when I saw a piece of metal at the base of the fence and a hunk of glass. Ends up being an old Schlitz beer pop top and a bit of old wine bottle with part of the "not for reuse by gov't mandate" message.

The sheep and birds wandered the grain but the sheep were nestled in the shade and didn't spend much time in the sun during the day.

The garden needed weeding some more and I filled a tub from the celery and pepper rows.

IMG_20220712_112758_HDR.jpg

Of course I found another volunteer tomato.

IMG_20220712_112810_HDR.jpg

The celery is coming along and this is the largest of them, about 5 inches tall.

IMG_20220712_112906_HDR.jpg

The raspberry plants are ripening now and we will get about a quart from the plants as it looks now. There is a ton of new growth though so I have hopes that they will do better as the years progress.

The cabbage row filled only a partial tub with the weeds.

IMG_20220712_114100_HDR.jpg

HERPES! GARDEN HERPES! Sneaky damned tomatillos keep popping up all over the garden. This one got pulled out and tossed in the weeds bucket. The only ones I am allowing to grow are at the end of the pole garden way away from the main garden.

Ever have the desire to mess with someone just drop a tomatillo in their garden.

IMG_20220712_114203_HDR.jpg

The carrot row was a serious pain in the ass as the carrots are so easy to pull out with the weeds. It's like the carrots see the weeds getting pulled out and can't help but hold on for dear life. Didn't help the weeds had gotten so thick....

IMG_20220712_121903_HDR.jpg

I had to fill the chicken waters and then as I was filling the sheep waters I found a slew of volunteer squash plants popping up. There were 7 or 8 of them.

IMG_20220712_123632_HDR.jpg

I handed the hose to R who then spent minutes hosing the alpaca down and finishing filling the waters while I got my trowel and a tray for the squash plants.

I moved them all to the main garden and into the last row which I had yet to plant anything in. I have no clue which squash they are from last year but they should have enough room, light, and be out of my way.

IMG_20220712_124226_HDR.jpg

That volunteer tomato got moved about 3 feet away and I put a cage on it. I wanted to get it in the pepper row which will mostly all be caged as well and out of the celery row.

I setup the sprinkler for the boys mid day as it was mid 90s F. They played in it a bit but more so in the evening.

I took a break mid day in the heat. I had been dripping sweat as I was weeding and needed fluids and food while I cooled off in the house. Watched a couple of the Gold Rush shows then once the sun had moved some and given me some shade I headed back out again. The fence roll I had left at the bottom of the hill is damned heavy. I have to get it to the top of the hill can't do it all in one go. I managed to get it about 80 feet up the 200 foot long trail and set it against a tree. The hardest part remains which is the steepest. I am thinking of trying to setup a hauling system like for rock climbing to drag it up.

One of my bean rows is putting off a bit now. These are Provider green beans and they were planted the same day as the rest of the beans but they are doing the best of all the rows. I only got a small handful but will soon be inundated with them.

It was time to give the grape vines a good manicure or hair cutting. The 3 are setting many bunches but also the tips of the vines are going crazy in growth. I spent a while cutting back all the runners to the last bunch of grapes on each. I hope this will direct more of the energy to the grapes and less to the growth of the vines which will hopefully give me much bigger grapes than prior years.

The pile of cut vines got tossed to the sheep who actually ventured out into the afternoon sun to munch on them.

@stryeyz got home from work and the sun was down enough that I had shade on the hillside. I had changed out the chain on the saw and I hiked up the hill with it and the fence post pounder.

IMG_20220712_171351_HDR.jpg

It took me only about 15 minutes to cut out the 20 foot section from the top of the tree so I would have room to run the fence. I tossed a bunch of the rounds down the hill but they didn't make it very far. It will be a pain in the ass to get all the rounds down the hill and over to the yard for splitting.

IMG_20220712_172438_HDR.jpg

It was a major pain having the tree left hanging up in the air as it had a ton of pressure on the top while I was cutting.

IMG_20220712_172449_HDR.jpg

It took me a minute to figure out how to get it off the stump but after a cut of the stump it slid right off onto the ground. It still has a bit of a gap in the middle between the log and ground but it is far safer now. I will work on cutting it to rounds later this week or early next.

After my very needed shower the evening soak felt quite nice on my sore body.

Today is going to be hard to get a lot done since mid day we are going to see a movie with the boys then this evening I have my co-op board meeting. It rained this morning a bit as thunderstorms built up right over us and blasted to the northeast which will make fr a seriously muggy day.

I don't envy your fencing project. That looks like a beast of a job

Hardest part is getting the fencing up the hill. Once it is up gravity does a lot of the work for me. I really want it done so our dog has more than a 60'x 70' area to roam so he will work some of his chunk off.
