Harvest, Cutting Grass and Weeds, Waters, Trail Building, Shop Vac Install, Motor Tests - Thursday

A full day yesterday and I have no lack of projects to keep me busy.

12 pounds of squash went to the cooler. I will hopefully get some sales soon but in reality the gas cost of delivering the produce makes it so I need good sized orders to justify the transit cost.

It had been bugging me seeing the weeds in the yard getting so tall so I spent an hour swinging my way through the worst of it all. First was the inner yard which is always my first tell that the rest of the farm needs to be cut.

The trail to the studio needs to be cleaned up of the fence and some other stuff but at least the grass is cut.

I have no idea what the weed is that grows here by the sheep pen but it gets to a rather thick matting and is a bit difficult to cut through.

I cleared below the lower garden some, mainly the full pass along the fence line. I need to go cut the rest of the area between the garden and the creek.

The last of the spots was the area across the creek where the wormwood are. You can see them standing tall in the sun. I found my Arbs as well and excavated them from the tall grasses. I had to stop since the trimmer ran out of line and I was soaked in sweat.

I cut down a ton of flowers but they were all on noxious weeds that I don't want to have procreating. The butterflies and bees had their fill and can go across the street to the median for their flowers now.

Soon the wormwood will be flowering and I will be able to harvest it at full potency.

Around noon I emptied out the bird waters and got them refilled.

As I stood in the sheep pen refilling their waters and spraying down the alpaca the life flight helo flew right over the farm, made a circle and landed at the fire station in Chattaroy. I looked at Pulsepoint to see a medical emergency 3 miles north of us that they ended up flying to Spokane. The bird was on the ground for half an hour before it took off.

After getting something to eat I spent an hour at the base of the hill clearing the trail out. I cut back a bunch of brush and opened the trail up to twice or more the width it was.

I lugged some of the tools up the hill before heading back to the house to cool off for a bit.

I have been gathering my various electric motors from around the farm and in doing so I found the insides of an old vacuum. That made me remember that I had this one sitting out that I had saved since the machine still worked just not the floor part. I pulled all the filters out and figured out I could just screw the thing to the wall of my tool shed. It is perfect as it reaches all my tools and the hose is long enough to reach across the shed. The thing is stupid easy to empty and sits nicely out of my way on the wall.

Our friend stopped by then too pickup the turkey bones from our butchering over the weekend. She and I visited for a while before she left and I got back to work.

Three 1/3 hp and one 1/2 hp motor. The three 1/3 hp motors all spun right away but the 1/2 hp one on the ground had to get broken free before it would spin up. I was a bit surprised it did once I got the rotor free. Added to the pile I have ten 1/4 hp or larger motors.

I found myself back on the hill with the dog as I worked to cut trail up the hill. To make it a safer trail for anyone to climb I am trying to create a real trail with some levelness to it. It will make it less slick from the needles and grasses. It's all a bit patchwork for now but the sections will all be linked together into one nice trail.

IMG_20220721_170645_HDR.jpg

I raked the trail clear all the way to the upper gate and cut a little bit of the trail with the rake.

IMG_20220721_171610_HDR.jpg

The harder packed soil under the power lines is the hardest part of the trail to cut. There are tons of rocks from the back fill of the gas line that runs beneath which are all getting rolled down the hill.

A section of the upper portion is now cut and @stryeyz was home by now so I headed down the hill a dripping mess of sweat again.

Another easier dinner night and the boys made a massive mess of the kitchen trying to make popcorn in the air popper after dinner. They have a TON of cleaning to do today.

Woke to it cloudy this morning from storms to our southeast but it is clearing quickly. After picking in the gardens I have to keep working on the trail, hauling debris down for the chipper, the sheep need another bale, and the grass I cut yesterday should get raked and hauled to the sheep pen.
