Raccoons, Harvests, Creek, Chick, Butterfly, Heat - Wednesday
Yesterday morning I walked down to the creek and grabbed the trail camera. As I looked around I saw these raccoon tracks in the sand so was pretty sure what I would have videos of.
It was at least three of them that were nosing around the stump in the creek where the mink had popped out of the water. They were there after 11pm and then again around 4am which makes me think they likely live somewhere near the creek intersection. A little too close to the farm for my liking.
11 pounds of squash were ready. I texted with procurement at the co-op and will be hearing from the person taking over the position soon. I have to sort the squash I have in the cooler now and likely shuttle some off to @stryeyz co-workers.
It took me a while as I was not feeling the best but I scooted down the first bean rows and barely was able to fit all the beans in the bucket. Piled higher than the handles I got 13.5 pounds, of which 10 went to the cooler and the 3.5 went in the fridge in the house for us.
I got my clothes washed and on the line which were dry really fast. One benefit of the heatwave.
I found a few worms in the sheep pen and with the boys we walked down stream and under the highway. I had a small pole with and I tossed the line in the small pool just outside the tunnel. Last year there were a ton of trout in the pool but this year they seem to have gone out into the main river. I still got a bunch of bites from some pretty small fish. The boys ended up playing in the water so fishing was done.
Once back at the house it was the heat of the day so was trying to stay in the shade. I got 2 hub motors hooked up to one speed controller and figured out how to wire them so they go the same direction. I'm figuring on having 4 drive wheels in front and the bicycle wheel set in the rear. Awaiting a tool to deliver so I can really get to work on building the cart.
A hen has popped a single chick out. I think she was sitting behind the boat somewhere but am not sure. We will see if she is capable of keeping it alive or not.
A butterfly found the red of the hammock on the deck. Rather large, about the size of a swallowtail but without the tail. It flew off and had a fast darting flight as it disappeared behind the bushes.
Small handful of raspberries with maybe as many left to ripen.
I was headed to the cucumbers to pick when I saw this turkey running around with a big clump of dead grass hanging from its beak. It finally dropped it and seemed like it didn't care then. Was a silly sight seeing it suddenly give it up like it wasn't supposed to have it.
4 more cucumbers and I got a handful of Fortex beans.
It was still 80F after dark and today is supposed to be well over 100F. Pretty cool my watch has only needed to be charged once so far, the solar charging is keeping it nicely charged during the day.
Today I am picking first thing then I need to get any of the outdoor tasks done before noon when it will be much hotter than 90F.

Hi, I've been wanting to ask for a long time why you collect such small squash, and don't wait until they grow bigger?
For sales. I need them to be under a pound each for the co-op since most go into csa style boxes.
Great harvest of the all the vegetables especially the squash. What does the racoon eat in your garden? I have visits from birds and that is headache enough.
It is funny that the turkey dropped the club. Maybe the turkey did not want to be photographed with a clump in its beak.
The raccoons will eat the birds, they generally leave the garden alone. Skunks steal eggs as well as the ravens. My main nemesis for the gardens is the deer and ensuring they are kept well at bay.
Wow - nature's ecosystem coexisting. I am in an apartment therefore my garden is small scale. My balcony/terrace garden is relatively safe. I will no longer complain about the birds.
