Web3 social media shows a Twitter edit button is redundant

Web3 social media shows a Twitter edit button is redundant.

Direct from the desk of Dane Williams.

Functionality of Web3 social dApps built on Hive, shows Twitter to be the dated, untrustworthy tech that it is.

When I see the corporate pushback to granting users the ability to edit their Tweets sometime in the future, I can’t help but laugh.

Why is everyone making it out to be such a big deal when the tech behind it all makes the argument completely mute?

The fact of the matter remains that due to its centralised Web2 properties, Twitter Inc not only owns the account that you’re tweeting from, but they own the entire network itself.

That’s right, they reserve the right to amplify, censor or delete whatever message they see as right or wrong.

For whatever reason they think aligns with society’s mood of the day.

So I ask the question…

What is the big deal about letting their pleb users edit old tweets?

It just seems to me that people are getting worked up over something that the entire Web2 design of Twitter makes completely redundant.

Twitter Inc will tell you that they represent moments in history.

A snapshot in time that should never be changed.

Oh, unless Twitter itself deems something no longer socially acceptable.

By allowing you to edit Tweets, absolutely nothing changes.

Twitter Inc will always be in control of the ENTIRE platform and every account running on top of it.

Whether you’ve edited or not, that message can be changed or removed by a third party at any time.

So arguing that users editing old tweets will somehow ruin the sanctity of the platform is therefore not only makes no sense, it’s actually laughable.

Web3 and Hive fixes this

As an industry leader in the Web3 social media industry, Hive is different.

You see, Web3 blogging and social platforms built on top of Hive actually already allow users to edit their content

Because as one of the only truly decentralised blockchains on the planet that can boast no controlling pre-mine stake and extremely diverse token distribution, what could happen on Twitter could NEVER happen on Hive.

Twitter can change your message because they own the network and all of the accounts running on top of it.

But thanks to the immutable properties of the underlying Hive blockchain, all prior versions of every piece of content is forever saved and retrievable.

The power of Web3 is really shown when you see front-ends choosing to display edited content differently.

LeoFinance only shows the latest version with a timestamped edited message at the top allowing users to delve into the blockchain to find what was changed at their will.

But the Ecency front-end allows readers to click a drop down and browse the entire edit history side by side.

Hive’s edit functionality via the Ecency front-end.

Extremely powerful when you take into account that by using a censorship-resistant, Web3 Hive account that you own the keys to, you and only you can edit or remove content from your own account.

There are no silly buggers being played by the network like you always run the risk of on Twitter.

As I like to say, there is a difference between choosing to be censorship-resistant (like Gettr) and being technically censorship-resistant like Hive.

Hive, home of the best Web3 blogging and social platforms, literally fixes this.

So why not take the next step when it comes to the evolution of social media and open your own Web3 Hive account?

LeoFinance makes it super simple to create an account that also acts as a crypto wallet by offering you the ability to use your Web2 Twitter account to sign up.

Simply head to leofinance.io, click the get started button at the top and create your account using your Twitter login.

When you’re ready, you can claim your keys and take full control of your account.

Best of probabilities to you.

Hive fixes so many things these days that it's going to be funny when people finally discover it.

And btw, I didn't know that Ecency allows you to see the edit history of a post. That's very cool!

In terms of how Hive content is displayed by front-ends, I really think Ecency is leading the way.

Like you said, the way Ecency allows you to view the edit history is great.

Not to mention the way they display up and downvotes as an aggregate, rather than outwardly displaying posts with 100 broken hearts simply because the Hive elite decided to smash them with a downvote trail that means nothing.

Props to the Ecency team.

I fear their next step might actually be adapting a centralized version of Hive tbh

Twitter is a centralised version of Hive.

My argument is that centralised services arguing for or against an edit button is completely redundant because it can just be bypassed by the platform owner.

If Twitter Inc can just edit/delete your Tweet, then who cares if you edit things?

The only thing that matters in the end is the decentralisation of the underlying network that the social application is built on.

If the network is not decentralised, then it can be controlled by a single actor and content can be edited/deleted at their will.

We see examples of this happening by Twitter and in the crypto world by Steemit.

Currently Hive is the ONLY truly decentralised network that can cater for censorship-resistant decentralised social media dApps.

Nice! I didn't know Ecency has an edits viewer. There used to be a tool which had that, but I forgot which it was. Good to see Ecency has it.

The other front-ends could learn a lot from how Ecency displays content.

Edits and how the aggregate up/down votes to hide those scammy looking broken hearts are two perfect examples.

Thanks for highlighting the benefits of Hive vs that legacy technology aka Twitter.

This is so true, it's like borrowing a friend's car and changing the paint job and rims like it belongs to you. Whenever he comes back for his car he would possess everything including your modifications.

I really love that we have an immutable network in Hive and in time we would be a force to reckon with as the real freedom of speech and ownership of content is presently on Hive.

As always, I really loved reading your post.

This is another entry for @comet.ranker operation #ping bonus round.

LOL, great analogy!

Thanks for adding your 2c mate :)

So many features to the hive. Thanks for pointing some of them out.

At risk of sounding like a broken record, Hive really is the key to effective decentralised social media.

Nobody can guarantee freedom of speech like a Web3 Hive account can.

I agree and Hive definitely fixes this. I didn't know about the version history in ecency though.

There is much to be learned from Ecency's presentation of content.

Two perfect examples are edits and how they aggregate up/down votes to hide those scammy looking broken hearts.

Yeah, that is pretty silly. If it is bad enough once it is out there someone will screenshot it and it doesn't matter how much you really edit it anyway. I am looking forward to Project Blank when it finally drops. I think Leo has a good chance of doing things right.

Do you think the key to Project Blank is just getting rewards right?

Remember Hive does already have dBuzz which has all the censorship-resistant properties of Hive.

But the fact they make each 'buzz' a post means that the Hive elite hate short-form content getting hit by autovoters.

I don't use dbuzz for that reason. I think project blank is going to have a different mechanic. It sounds like posts won't show up on your main feed.

Great article. Twitter is Really bad. I will never use twitter because of the censorship.
They showed who they really are a long time ago.
I am decentralized all the way if possible.

Unfortunately the masses are still on Web2 platforms like Twitter.

For this reason, it's worth still having a presence there, even if you're only using it to try and onboard people to eventually become followers of your Web3 account.

I'm learning that tweets can't be edited, as I had never noticed that before, but as you say Hive is superior in this because instead of pretending to be free, it completes it from the very beginning.

Editing Tweets is one of the biggest debates on their platform.

But yeah, as I've tried to show here, the argument is made redundant by the fact that Twitter Inc can just delete your account anyway.

I think the edit option on Twitter does not exists becuase the team dont want to have that possibility because technical it is very easy to implement.

Hive fixes almost every problem that exists on Web2 but for many people it is complicate to understand how the things works here.

Damn, sorry I missed this comment over the weekend.

I couldn't have put it better myself :)

Now that Hive has already a lot of things created and working it is time to build things that will allow other people to understand what how everything works like the mean for each dapp, token and even basic concepts like resource credits.

I think the focus now it is to build platforms that can help everyone understand Hive
