Hispaliterario 10: Persecution and Death in the Desert

«Does it make sense to perish in a desert?» Armando asks himself, as he raises his gaze to the blue sky that looks immense and totally clear. He is finishing climbing a new sand hill, behind which he hopes to see the way out of this implacable desert that has trapped him for six days. Taking a few last steps, he peers over the edge of the hill of fine sand that floods his feet. After looking into the distance and all around, he emits a deep sigh that is almost felt in the arid environment. Only desert wherever he looks.

He sits on the edge of the ridge and takes the last remaining bottle of water. After taking a small sip, he concludes that by nightfall, he will be out of water. He looks out over the horizon and thinks that maybe it was a terrible decision to run away after all. He regrets feeling guilty for being a coward and for not having confronted the person who has forced him into this wilderness. Because in the end, it was his decision to run away.

As he thinks about his options, he can't help but remember his childhood, when he dreamed of being an adventurer. Memories come to his mind of when he had sailed all the seas of the world, first as a pirate and then as the captain of a huge container ship. He takes some sand in his hands and wonders if he is not already dead and at the bottom of the sea, where there is no more water, only sand, sun, and heat.

He starts walking again, thinking that maybe, the one he is running away from and knows he is armed, he can find him again and now, yes, end his life. He advances with determined steps, remembering when turned into a kind of Indiana Jones, he had gone deep into the most inhospitable jungle and had found the most valuable treasure in the universe, which was represented by the beautiful green eyes of Damarys, the girl of the second "B", who with a smile, had asked him to save her cat at the top of a tree. Those were days of intense adventures in his room and in his mind, dreaming of the smile and the look of the girl he fell in love with, but who shortly after had moved to another city.

Armando walks without rest. Due to the lack of water, he decides to walk at night, thinking that this way he will be less exposed to heat and dehydration. He also believes that whoever is chasing him will only be able to catch him during the day, so he hopes, in this way, to put a lot of advantage between him and this feared being. After advancing without rest all night, he feels grateful for a strange but blessed dew that quenches his thirst, when, suddenly, he manages to make out what looks like a road. Hopeful, he advances quickly until he reaches the edge of the road and after thinking about it for a while, he continues towards where he thinks the city is. After a while, he sees a sign indicating the proximity of a bridge, and his soul shudders.
Dawn breaks and Armando finds what he never expected to find. There, in front of him, the car from which he had escaped a week ago, parked at the edge of the desert road. He is not surprised that no one, in all this time, has noticed the car abandoned there days ago. With some trepidation, he approaches the car hoping not to find who had forced him to come to this place and when he looks at the dashboard, he finds the letter he had left a week ago. He takes the letter and before opening it, he looks around to make sure that whoever is chasing him is not nearby. Then he takes a deep breath, opens the letter, and reads:

«Hello, my name is Armando. This world no longer has anything good to offer me and if you are reading this letter, it is because I am lying dead somewhere in this huge desert».

After reading the letter, Armando is overwhelmed and feelings overwhelm him. He looks up and, like in a movie, he sees himself driving down the road into the desert, stopping at the bridge that serves as the entrance to the desert and fighting with himself not to throw himself off. Then, driving to where he is, tearfully writing the letter, taking the gun that days before he was also unable to use to shoot himself in the head and going into the desert to die of thirst. He turns his gaze to the vast desert, where he has walked in a circle for a week to end up where he is. He sighs, breathes, and feels, for the first time in many years, grateful to be alive. He thinks that now he can be sure of one thing: the Armando who was chasing him and wanted to end his life is dead somewhere in the desert sands.

— Yo te ayudo, me llamo Carolina.

A car pulls up next to Armando, who has been trying to start his car for hours. As he rolls down the window, the beautiful and perfect smile of a girl tells him:

— Do you need help?

— Oh, yes, it's my battery, it's dead," Armando replies, unable to stop admiring the smile of the kind girl. She opens the door, gets out of the car, and takes off her dark glasses that cover her beautiful green eyes. Without stopping smiling, she extends her hand and says:

— I help you, my name is Carolina.

Those where days of intense adventure in his in his room and in his mind.

I laughed hard after that line.

This was such an excellent read. I like the twist and turns of events. There is something to learn about life in it. Armando had a life-changing experience in the desert.

Well done.
