It only occurred to me to respond in the most polite and courteous manner:

He smiled and answered me:

I was provoked to say yes because I really am nearsighted, but I immediately just argued:

No, sir, well, yes, of course, at that moment I looked at you, but believe me, if I had seen you before, you wouldn't have noticed that I was drinking, as many of those who are passing by at this moment must be doing - and I pointed to the road full of cars.

He turned to look at the large number of cars circulating at that moment. I imagined all the drivers very serious and straight in front of the steering wheel, hiding the different drinks they were carrying and attentive not to be seen by the officer on the right side of the road. Then, he turned to me again, but with a big smile on his face. At that moment, I think he was thinking what I was thinking. He looked at me, looked inside the car, looked at my girlfriend who was also smiling at him, and just said to me:

.- Don't ever be so cheeky as to drink while driving in front of a traffic officer again ok?

Sure officer, I will.

After exchanging other words in the sense of respecting authority and avoiding doing what I did, he let us go on our way. We celebrated that we would not have a hard time, that we avoided the imposition of a fine, and thanked the officer for being so tolerant. Those were different times and there was none of the police corruption that exists today in my country. But I am always amused by the fact that, at the time, it was very funny to stand there with my beer in my mouth, looking at the officer with his very serious face. I never really realized that he was there, right next to us. So, dear friend reading me, when you drive, you don't drink!. Llega el oficial y con su usual cadencia, se acerca al auto. Nosotros, ya habíamos arreglado todo dentro del auto para parecer los ciudadanos más respetuosos de la ley y con voz serena me dice:

.- Ciudadano, ¿usted sabe que es ilegal lo que está haciendo?

Solo se me ocurrió responderle de la manera más cortés y educada:

.-Me disculpo con usted agente, pero en realidad, yo no lo vi.

Él se sonrió y me contesta:

.- ¿No me viste y estabas allí empinando tu cerveza así como si nada? ¿Acaso tienes problemas de la vista?

Me provoco decirle que si, porque realmente soy miope, pero enseguida solo le argumente:

.- No, señor, bueno, si claro, en ese momento fue que lo mire, Pero créame que si lo hubiera visto antes, usted no se hubiera dado cuenta de que estaba tomando, como lo deben estar haciendo muchos de los que están pasando en este momento por aquí - y señale la vía repleta de autos.

Él se giró para ver la gran cantidad de autos que circulaban en ese momento. Yo me imaginé a todos los conductores muy serios y derechos frente al volante, ocultando las diferentes bebidas que llevaban y atentos de que no los viera el oficial a la derecha de la vía. Luego, se dirigió de nuevo a mí, pero con una gran sonrisa. En ese momento, creo que pensaba lo mismo que yo. Me miro, miro dentro del auto, miro a mi novia que también le sonreía y solo me dijo:

.- No vuelvas a ser tan descarado de tomar mientras conduces delante de un oficial de tránsito ¿ok?

.- Seguro oficial, así lo haré.

Después de intercambiar otras palabras en el sentido del respeto a la autoridad y evitar hacer lo que hice, nos dejó seguir nuestro camino. Celebramos que no pasaríamos un mal rato, que evitamos la imposición de una multa y agradecimos al oficial por ser tan tolerante. Eran otros tiempos y no existía ese afán de corrupción en la policía que se vive hoy día en mis país. Pero siempre me divierte el hecho de que, en el momento, fue muy gracioso estar allí con la cerveza en la boca, mirando al oficial con su cara muy seria. Realmente nunca me di cuenta de que estaba allí, justa al lado de nosotros. Así que, querido amigo que me lee, ¡cuando se conduce, no se toma!. Pero si está contento y feliz de que es viernes y siente que lo debe hacer, por favor, asegúrese de mirar a los lados antes de empinarse la botella, y no se exceda en eso.
