It was 1992 in my country Venezuela and just starting on February 4 an attempted coup d'état. At that time and as has always been a habit for me, I was watching television until very late. I think it was around midnight that a series of explosions and gunshots heard in the distance caught my attention. I lived about 5 kilometers from the Miraflores Palace, the official seat of government, where the insurgents tried to seize power, generating intense armed combat, causing destruction, and leaving several people dead. I knew something was going on and so I witnessed how the TV signals were suspended. I think it was around 1 a.m. that I was able to observe the then President of the country, Carlos Andres Perez, address a message to the nation informing about the situation, on Venevision, a private channel in my country. I could not sleep and I was very interested in finding out the facts, so I was very attentive to the television and radio during those hours. At about 11 o'clock in the morning, the surrender of the leader of the attempted coup, the then military man Hugo Chavez, who would eventually become one of the most nefarious rulers of my country, was shown on television.

That first glimpse of Hugo Chavez surrendering live and direct, generated in me an immediate rejection towards his person. Having rendered the mandatory military service less than 4 years before, the attitude and message shown by Chavez in that presentation, immediately convinced me that this was an arrogant, false and full of resentment character.

During my stay in my country's military forces, my unit was commanded, at that time, by a Captain named Jesús Alberto Aguilarte Gamez, who was also part of the attempted coup and years later, Governor of Apure State. And for me, Chavez and Aguilarte were the same person. This because of the resentment they both felt towards the government at that time, besides their ideas of building a country based on Bolivarian thinking. But he was so arrogant, insensitive and so involved in those ideas, that in my unit we called him crazy Aguilarte, because he never lost a moment to force us to listen to his sermons full of disdain and rancor. History in Venezuela has been a guarantor and witness of the disastrous consequences of these persons, today absent from this world, having managed to come to power. And you, where were you when these events took place in Venezuela?

That day was the beginning of the end of our economy and our freedom of free thought, because then came the adoption of socialism in the majority of the people, that cancer is still alive.

I was never fooled by the character of the former president or his speech of a brave new world.

It must have been very shocking to live so close to the palace, thank God you did not go out in the street, I was a child, I was in high school studying second year, but I also remember the looting and disorder that came after that date. @fragozar01 🤗

He never convinced me, not even when I was hiring public. But the illusion that he sold has caused a great wound that still persists in the country. I hope everything changes at some point. Thanks for the comment.

Interesting story which brought back memories for many of us and which I think we should always keep in our minds. Unfortunately with everything and these events many did not perceive what could come later and made a very bad decision. But good friend some of us had good instinct and good head not to make a mistake although we are paying just for sinners.

Thanks for sharing your memories.

Blessings my friend @fragozar01

I'm so sorry that this happened to your country and that you all now suffer the consequences of poor & arrogant leadership!
I just pray that things turnaround by a miracle with strong ethical leaders.

Sorry to read about this history that happened in your country. It's good the coup didn't succeed. I was an elementary kid in 1992 so it may have been shown in our country's news but I didn't watch it.

Perhaps if he had been successful, our story would be different, because this swindler would not have had to disguise himself as a democrat, as he did after this failure as a military man. Perhaps, today we would be different or who knows? Thanks for the comment.

You're welcome. Things can be different for sure or like you said, who knows. There are things we wished it didn't happen but they have become part of our nations' history.

Venezuela citizens have endured so much strife and things don't seem to be getting any better for the average citizen. Why is it that so many evil people are the ones that get control of a country and think of nothing else but what is good for them and their buddies.

Hopefully the political scene in your country will change and all citizens will prosper from the riches that lie below. The proven oil reserves in Venezuela are recognized as the largest in the world, and everybody should be able to share the countries resources!

Those who rule are all resentful and envious of those who work and prosper. They do not care about anyone in this country, more than their desire for wealth and power. Let's hope that ends at some point. Thank you for your kind words.

The fourth of February is a day that will never be forgotten in Venezuela, it marked a before and after in the political, social, and economic life of the country. By the way, the day before my sister and I were walking around the city, and we were surprised that everything he was very alone and silent, we didn't know what was happening in the capital

A day to remember without a doubt. For me, it has been unforgettable because it was like a premonition. At least I saw it and understood it. Thanks for the comment.

Hello Ramon, I was in high school at that time and my mother woke me up at dawn to watch the news on TV and I know that we differ in some aspects, but everything that happened with Chavez at that time and after was the result of many policies that were taken at that time and came to power because people wanted a change or would not have won, that this has had an impact in many ways yes there is no doubt, on the other hand I think the problem is not the thought of the Liberator. On the other hand, I believe that the problem is not the thought of the liberator, but the overturning and misuse of the words, speeches, letters and others of Simón Bolívar, who undoubtedly was a great man.

Friend, I do not understand how we could differ, I hope it is not in relation to Chavez, who for me, is the most disastrous being that has passed through the Miraflores Palace. 23 years of ruin I think are enough to demonstrate the great scam that I represent.

In relation to Bolivarian thought, I agree with you and I consider that the scammers, whom I already knew since 1986, when I did my military service, always used it for their personal benefit and really only saw it as a way to get into the feeling of people. I insist, that these two decades give a lot of clarity on that. And although I understood that in 1998, people wanted a change, I always felt that it was a deception and that they did not represent that change or would not fulfill what was promised in all their chatter before coming to power. Something that we have not yet learned is that the government is not there to solve problems or solve people's lives. Thinking that way makes us slaves of the state. and in 2008, I resigned from continuing to be a public employee, because I got fed up with all that falsehood. I know these scammers because I also use the red caps and I had to swallow thickly to take care of my fortnight until I get tired. I do not lose hope that everything will change, although I see it as more and more distant. Hugs to you friend.

You lived 5 km away and I was on the corner of San Luis at the end of Fuerzas Armadas Avenue.
The planes were flying over the building where I lived and my wife at that time, who was pregnant with my second child, was hiding in the closet because of the fear she felt.
The TV presentation of Chavez was the worst mistake of the CAP government, this catapulted him as a hero when in reality he was a ruthless, murderous and resentful being provoking years later the destruction of a beautiful country.
Very good post my friend Ramon (@fragozar01).
