StoryTime: The first time I won a dance competition

En varias oportunidades les he mencionado que soy bailarina competitiva desde hace ya 4 años, y aunque en mi trayecto se ha visto bastante afectado por la pandemia, puedo asegurarles que mis inicios fueron muy buenos y emocionantes. Uno de mis recuerdos favoritos (y la razón de ser del post de hoy) fue mi primera competencia de baile, que a su vez fue también mi primera vez ganando una competencia. Sé que muchas personas no tienen la suerte de lograr un primer lugar cuando compiten, así que considero mi caso bastante especial, aún más teniendo en cuenta el talento al que me enfrenté junto con mis compañeros en esa oportunidad.
I have mentioned on several occasions that I have been a competitive dancer for 4 years now, and although my journey has been affected by the pandemic, I can assure you that my beginnings were very good and exciting. One of my favorite memories (and the reason for today's post) was my first dance competition, which in turn was also my first time winning a competition. I know that many people are not lucky enough to achieve a first place when competing, so I consider my case quite special, even more so considering the talent I was up against along with my peers in that opportunity.
Todo comenzó con un mensaje, se que suena un poco dramático, pero así fue. A finales de 2018, mi en ese momento director, Iván Figuera, decidió escribirme un texto informándome que podía ser parte del equipo de competencias 2019, algo que para mí fue una gran sorpresa ya que apenas llevaba unos dos meses viendo clases en la academia DomusDance y había asumido que no sería de sus primeras opciones para formar parte del equipo competitivo, por suerte para mí, me equivoqué e Iván decidió darme la oportunidad. Así que como es obvio, acepté y para enero de 2019 iniciaba actividades como parte del #DomusCrew2019
It all started with a message, I know it sounds a bit dramatic, but that's how it was. At the end of 2018, my at that time director, Ivan Figuera, decided to write me a text informing me that I could be part of the 2019 competition team, something that for me was a big surprise since I had only been watching classes at DomusDance academy for about two months and I had assumed that I would not be one of his first choices to be part of the competitive team, luckily for me, I was wrong and Ivan decided to give me the opportunity. So as it is obvious, I accepted and by January 2019 I was starting activities as part of the #DomusCrew2019.
Luego de esto, pasaron muchos meses de prácticas, ensayos, caídas y errores, llenos también de mucha diversión y perseverancia por parte de todos mis compañeros y mía (obviamente). Por lo que en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, ya estábamos esperando nuestro transporte para ir a Cumaná, Estado Sucre, que sería la sede de la competencia Cuba Baila en Oriente.
After this, many months of practices, rehearsals, falls and mistakes passed, filled also with a lot of fun and perseverance on the part of all my companions and myself (obviously). So in the blink of an eye, we were already waiting for our transportation to go to Cumaná, Sucre State, which would be the venue for the Cuba Baila en Oriente competition.
El trayecto fue bastante corto y lleno de risas. En la llegada al hotel donde nos hospedaríamos hasta la hora competencia, tuvimos que esperar un momento para el Check-in, el cual aprovechamos para tomarnos fotos con los uniformes y repasar un poco la coreografía.
The trip was quite short and full of laughter. On arrival at the hotel where we would be staying until the competition time, we had to wait a moment for check-in, which we took the opportunity to take pictures with the uniforms and go over the choreography a bit.
El primer día de la competencia lo tuve libre, por lo que pude sentarme a disfrutar del talento del oriente de mi país. Realmente al ser mi primera competencia quedé sorprendida por lo buenos que eran todos, por la pasión que tenían y por su destreza en las distintas ramas que abarca la salsa casino. Lo más resaltante de este día fue la participación (y triunfo) de algunos de mi compañeros del grupo nuevo talento, que ganaron 1er y 5to lugar en pareja.
The first day of the competition was free, so I could sit and enjoy the talent from the east of my country. Really being my first competition I was surprised by how good they all were, for the passion they had and for their skill in the different branches that encompasses the casino salsa. The highlight of this day was the participation (and triumph) of some of my colleagues from the new talent group, who won 1st and 5th place in pairs.
Al segundo día, fue el día de mi competencia, nos levantamos temprano, desayunamos, hablamos un poco, al final todas las chicas nos reunimos para arreglarnos poco después del mediodía, después de todo teníamos que estar listas a las 5 de la tarde porque a esa hora comenzaba la competencia y entre el peinado y maquillaje, se perdía bastante tiempo. La habitación era un pequeño volcán de emoción, pero créanme fue una de las mejores partes de la competencia. Una vez todas listas nos cambiamos y fuimos directo al club Sirio, dónde se celebraba la competencia.
The second day was the day of my competition, we got up early, had breakfast, talked a little bit, at the end all the girls got together to get ready a little after noon, after all we had to be ready at 5 pm because at that time the competition started and between hair and makeup, we lost a lot of time. The room was a small volcano of emotion, but believe me it was one of the best parts of the competition. Once we were all ready we changed and went straight to the Sirio Club, where the competition was being held.
Creanme que no recuerdo gran parte de la espera, solo recuerdo que todos nos abrazamos antes de subir al escenario y nos dijimos que lo haríamos bien, que nos queríamos, y cuando anunciaron nuestra entrada, solo nos quedó sonreír y actuar.
Believe me I don't remember much of the wait, I just remember that we all hugged each other before going on stage and told each other that we would do well, that we loved each other, and when they announced our entrance, we just smiled and performed.

Después de nuestra presentación, estábamos nerviosos de verdad, ya no había nada que hacer y sabíamos habían existido errores, pero también que fuimos buenos para ser Nuevos Talento. Así que solo nos quedaban minutos para premiación. Decidimos olvidar el tema y disfrutar el resto de la competencia.
After our presentation, we were really nervous, there was nothing left to do and we knew there had been mistakes, but also that we were good at being New Talent. So we only had a few minutes left for the awards. We decided to forget about it and enjoy the rest of the competition.
Cuando por fin fue el momento de los premios anunciaron fui perdiendo más y más la fé. El 3 lugar se lo dieron a la academia OLU una de las mejores del país, una de esas a las que yo admiraba muchísimo, tanto así, que actualmente formo parte de ella. El 2do lugar a Rumba Casino, otra gran academia de la capital del país, cuyos directores actualmente representan a Venezuela a nivel internacional. Y el primer lugar... ¡ERA NUESTRO! Subimos rápidamente a recibir nuestra medalla con lágrimas de felicidad, y al bajar nos esperaba el mejor de los regalos, la cara de orgullo y felicidad de Ivancito, nuestro director, que no cabía en sí, de tanta felicidad, era la primera vez que Domus se llevaba un primer lugar en grupo.
Lastimosamente nadie estaba grabando ese momento, pero les puedo asegurar, que en mi corazón sigue grabado toda la emoción
When it was finally time for the awards to be announced, I was losing more and more faith. The 3rd place was given to the OLU academy, one of the best in the country, one of those that I admired so much that I am currently part of it. The 2nd place went to Rumba Casino, another great academy in the capital of the country, whose directors currently represent Venezuela at an international level. And the first place... IT WAS OURS! We went up quickly to receive our medal with tears of happiness, and when we came down, the best of gifts was waiting for us, the face of pride and happiness of Ivancito, our director, who was so happy, it was the first time that Domus took first place in a group. Unfortunately no one was recording that moment, but I can assure you that in my heart is still engraved all the excitement.
Y bueno, el resto se los iré contando poco a poco, actualmente seguimos siendo los campeones de la categoria Nuevo Talento de Cuba Baila en Oriente, pues no se han hecho y al parecer no se harán, nuevas ediciones de esta competencia. Mi camino continúo ese año, ya que me atreví a entrar en otras categorías, entre las que más me gustaron: pareja y estilo chica, y aunque no volvimos a repetir la hazaña del primer lugar, en las siguientes competencias logramos 2dos y 3eros lugares. Actualmente sigo siendo una bailarina competitiva activa, solo que en otra academia. Les prometo que pronto les mostraré mis avances en este ámbito.
And well, the rest I will tell you little by little, currently we are still the champions of the New Talent category of Cuba Baila en Oriente, because there have not been and apparently will not be new editions of this competition. My path continued that year, since I dared to enter other categories, among which I liked the most: couple and girl style, and although we did not repeat the feat of first place, in the following competitions we achieved 2nd and 3rd places. Currently I am still an active competitive dancer, only in another academy. I promise that soon I will show you my progress in this area.
