Do You Formally Follow On-Chain Everyone Who You Truly Follow On Hive?

avatar

As I was staring at my profile without a reason, thinking about a topic to write about today, I noticed I was approaching 1000 followers (more like passed 900, lol), and a 70 rep.

Neither of these metrics holds as much relevance as it should.

Reputation was highly manipulated in the early days of the former blockchain via the voting bots, and many followers are often long-dead or dormant accounts.

As I was staring at this, I realized I don't rely on the on-chain following mechanics at all these days. I have an impressive amount of people (better said accounts) on notification for when they post something new and rarely check my feed anymore.

On my gaming account, I have 14 accounts that I "follow" using the notification method. On my main posting account, a staggering 51 accounts. And I take a look at every single one of their posts, at least the title and the first few lines of text. If I'm not interested, I don't open the post.

Often I leave a backlog of posts to read and sometimes they add up to a couple of days old. Sometimes I vote for them in advance after I browse through for a very rough idea (that is another reason why section titles help), to make sure I catch the 24h voting period.

After looking at these lists of accounts I have on notification, I noticed I only formally follow on-chain some of them. Even if I don't currently put much emphasis on the formal following mechanism on-chain, I wonder if I'm doing the right thing.

First, I know from experience that people love that new follower notification.

Second, it is a sort of a public statement - I follow this guy or gal. Sure, this can become obvious from regular comments and (to a much lesser degree) from votes.

And third, the lists of notifications I've created are centralized. Gone is the service, gone is the list. It's not like it's the first time a service provider disappears without warning in the crypto world.

I'm thinking I should start following on-chain these people/accounts I have on notification-only if they are still active. Even if I rarely check my feed. Although you never know what the future holds.

What about you? Do you formally follow on-chain everyone who you truly follow on Hive? Why yes or no?

Thanks! Yes, I follow a couple of people from my country too. Also sometimes you don't even know, since we post in English.

Since I still read my feed so my follow list is now trimmed very much.

Actually , I unfollowed few users because they are reblogging everything(some 15+ post daily) that does not come to my interested read.

I also disliked this practice, and that's maybe why I reblog very few things.

I don't use my follow/follower list in any way other than to look somone up that I follow in case I want to specifically look up something about them. I didn't know there was a way to set up alerts. I probably would have liked that.

There are not on Hive. On Discord, GINAbot.

YES. My routine is I check my following feed a few times a day and read what I find interesting. Give them an upvote. Rinse and repeat the same thing the next day.

I used to do the same. But in time I followed different types of people and my feed no longer reflected what I needed, especially after focusing on only a few domains/tribes.

Nope...
I don't know how to do that and neither am I interested.

By clicking Follow on their profile. I'm sure you knew about that, just thought it was something else.

Notifications are a different thing and are not supported on-chain although different interfaces have versions of them implemented.

Woa, 913 followers, that is an insane amount!!! This in itself is already considered a huge achievement.

I am very new to hive so I follow few people, including you, I think your content on cryptocurrencies is awesome, and when I look at my feed I only see the friends tab on ecency.

I'm not very familiar with Ecency - although it's an awesome interface! - but my guess is that by 'your friends' they mean people you follow.

No, I don't because my feed is way too long. From what I see, I tend to just follow along things like LeoFinance to get the content I want compared to trying to read every single post in my feed.

No, I don't because my feed is way too long.

Exactly what happened to me. The feed became too cluttered, and instead of trying to clean it up, I decided to make these lists.

I recently did a bit of a clean-out of my on-chain following list.

Plenty of accounts I used to love reading have gone completely silent.

Some cleaned out their HP, some just sits dormant making me wonder what happened to them...

I did that once in the past. But it's a tedious job and the benefits weren't that great at a first impression.

If there was a way to select people you follow based on certain criteria (dead accounts, lost interest in them - i.e. no vote or comment on their posts in 6 or more months, etc.) and do something with them (like bulk unfollow, or make a list), that might be interesting. @asgarth

This notification option seems really cool, I should try it out. The wat I roll is, if I consume some content that I really liked I'd follow the person, I check my feed usually so I'll run into them a lot of times, if I don't run into them (maybe due to not checking my feed) sometimes I remember them and search for their blogs, if I can't randomly remember you then maybe your content wasn't really worth it 😂. I remember a lot, though.

Why don't you check your feed @gadrian?

Why don't you check your feed @gadrian?

Because over time I followed different types of accounts and right now my feed is pretty cluttered. I cleaned it up once, but it's a lot of work and it's not really worth it.

Of course, PeakD has a nice way to create and organize lists at their application level, but I got used to these types of notifications, and the way I use them I don't miss important posts, which can happen even if you have lists.

I usually check my Feed a couple of times a day to see what my feed is doing. But I might check the alerts too.
Thanks for the tip.
Well done with the 900+ followers.

even if you follow someone you don't always see their articles as we follow many people, which happens same to us when we write article and our followers don't engage with them

yep, that's why I have the people I really follow at the moment on discord notification when they post.
