Emotional Contagion: Myth or Science?

Emotions

Have you ever heard the saying that “joy is contagious, spread it”? You most likely have, it is quite common and maybe even over flogged. I thought it was just one of those sayings until I stumbled on something in my journey through the rain forests of the internet: EMOTIONAL CONTAGION.

I had to go to Wikipedia to look it up and they had this to say:

“Emotional contagion is the phenomenon of having one person’s emotions and related behaviours directly trigger similar emotions and behaviours. Emotions can be shared across individuals in many different ways both implicitly or explicitly.”

The concept is really straightforward.

It even works in groups like classes or organizations, that is every team needs a certain type of temperament in one or two members of the group to keep the morale and confidence of the team at satisfactory levels. Even group projects would benefit from more than serious person to ensure that it gets completed.

How much more you? Remember to move to places of happiness, for your own good. I’m not advocating that you abandon your friends or family in the moments of grief and sadness but you should be intentional about the places you find yourself and the people you associate with. Let’s be honest some people genuinely have bad vibes, so limit their access to you.

There’s even research to back it up;

“Experts believe that negative emotions, like pain, fear and sadness, are more contagious than positive ones. This can be traced back to our survival instinct. Your brain pays more attention to negative emotions because it's wired to keep you safe”.
