The Flicker Haven Farm Files-It's Sow And Go Time!

It's going to snow Saturday. Blech.

Flicker Haven Farm Files page divider.png

But, it won't stay, and the prospect of a dusting of late season floof isn't dampening my spring gardening is upon us spirit, NAY! I will not succumb to bad vibes matter how freaking cold it is right now, nor how much snow pukes on us from up above.

Sorry, probably had too much coffee this morning...

Anyway, yesterday was beyond a totally productive day on the farm!

IMG_5027.jpg

To start with, I really needed to transplant my little arnica seedlings into larger pots. That job took about five minutes with my trusty pencil, recycled red plastic cups, and some soil. The little arnica seedlings are so delicate, and I am so excited to get them into the ground later this spring because I have salve creation plans for the healing powerhouse!

After the arnica was rehomed, it was marigold time. Every year I try to plant a bajillion marigold seeds because they are just cool. I love the color they add to everywhere, plus they are super hardy. Who doesn't love that?

That said, I had a good chuckle as I read what my grandma wrote on the bag of marigold seeds that she gave me this past Christmas:

IMG_5026.jpg

And right Grandma is, there truly is enough marigold seeds in there to plant twenty acres! Good seed overload grief!

And that isn't the only marigold seeds I have and planted either! A man whom I have adopted as my grandpa, and who is a magnificent gardening guru himself, gave me some of his stock for Christmas too! I am going to have Christmas marigolds everywhere!

IMG_5031.jpg

Plus, I had a bit of this variety of marigold left over from last year, so I planted some of those too:

IMG_5032.jpg

It's so going to be marigold magnificent around here this summer, and this is just my first wave of flower seeding!

IMG_5030.jpg

After finishing with the marigold madness, I moved onto seeding a few ground cherry plants, I am super excited to try them, as I have wanted to grow them for years!

Flicker Haven Farm Files page divider.png

It was as I walking to the bathroom to place the freshly seeded ground cherry pots onto the grow shelf that the first cat assassination attempt for the day occurred. As I strolled purposefully through my bedroom towards the bathroom, Mama Cat, AKA Dogcat, AKA Khajit, AKA Heckin Chonker (She has a lot of aliases), exploded out from underneath my bed and whacked me right in the shins. I flew forward, but as I chose to believe that my cats actually love me and their tripping attempts are done as a form of balance training, I caught myself and trotted almost gracefully into the bathroom.

IMG_5029.jpg

I felt pretty pleased that I didn't spill an ounce of potting soil either!

IMG_5021.jpg

My eyes fell upon the tomato seedlings, which are growing like they have been injected with something I swear, and I smiled like a fool who had just serendipitously cheated death.

It was then time to bolt outdoors into the glorious sun and seed some early spring, hardy cold weather crops.

IMG_5038.jpg

Before you could say frostbite, I had sown a patch of chives in between a some volunteer onions, two rows of Asian greens (pak choi and Pai Tsai Fun Jen), and two rows of kale (White Russian, Red Russian, and Blue Curled).

It felt so good to be out digging in the dirt, and the condition of my garden soil made me want to swoon. Last fall we tilled in a ton of manure. Probably more than a ton because my garden is a bit on the large side, and after a winter of chilling under the snow pack, well, let's just say my soil is bussin. (Sorry, I live with a bunch of teenagers, at least I am not saying Bruh every sentence.)

IMG_5040.jpg

Before leaving I took a minute to marvel at the garlic's growth progress. I can taste the garlic scape pesto now, just looking at the photo. July can get here promptly so I can eat some of the stuff, pretty please!!

IMG_5042.jpg

And then came the highlight of my day, last fall my dear friend gave me two hops plants. One of them was in an iffy state when I got it, so I spent quite a bit of time making sure it got love and care so it would root before the hard frost. Plant number one was always strong, so I squeed in glee but not surprise as I spied the little hops buds protruding from the ground as I inspected the plant. However, my squee became a joyous aria as I spied the lone bud poking out of the ground from the less vigorous plant. YAY!

IMG_5044.jpg

On the way back to the house, I peeked at the rhubarb's progress, marveling at how resilient rhubarb is. Not to mention tasty and prolific, if only all plants could be so.

IMG_5045.jpg

It was after I happily crossed my back door threshold and started down the hallway that cat assassination training assault number two went down. To my shame, I wasn't expecting it, for up until today, the attacks were singular in nature. Dogcat's granddaughter, a delightful tabby whom we call Baba Yaga, flew out of the laundry room and masterfully tangled her in heat form in my legs. It was a tactical attack and I almost went down on one knee. Almost, I am pretty quick om my feet still even if I am getting old, and Fred Flinstone would have been proud of my twinkle toes footwork down the hallway.

That yowling hoyden didn't even look remotely repentant. I had half a mind to spray her with the lavender hydrosol bottle I keep in the dining room for house smell good purposes, but then I remembered she was in heat and probably miserable anyway. Sigh.

A few minutes later I plunked down into my little recliner by the woodstove. I love my nook of coziness and was ready to get some serious computer work done when my carcass felt like it was being judged.

I looked up to this scene:

IMG_5022 (2).jpg

If I don't ever post again, it's because the corgi teamed up with the cats to eliminate me. That or I am spending time loving on them all in a last ditch effort to preserve my life. Either way, I think I am in trouble....

All that planting stuff and such is cool you know, I wish I had my own garden to follow your example and learn from you. BUT it got really interesting when I landed here:

I was laughing out loud here, I could totally see this happening as these animals, yeah, uhm, they have character and I know how they can behave lol. I'm glad you chose to believe your cats love you because what's not to love. Balance training it is!

I have a funny story myself from one of our kittens, reading yours inspired me (once again!) to try and write that situation down to make people laugh. I have to let my boyfriend read it first though to see if this actually represents the situation that occurred at the time as he was there with me :)

ps the dog looks innocent. so didn't do anything wrong!

Exactly! LOL! I love all my critters, even the ones I suspect are trying to kill me😁

Sorry I am slow to reply, I had an unexpected, somewhat traumatizing adventure yesterday afternoon. Then my car decided to act up so I had to drive it thirty miles to the shop this morning, but everything's fixed, I am just trying to catch up, but the story of my second 911 call of the week shall be posted in the morning as I have my son's track meet to attend here in a bit.

And I seriously can't wait to read that kitten story of yours!!

PS. My Cora says thank you for the vote of innocence lol!

Exactly! LOL! I love all my critters, even the ones I suspect are trying to kill me😁

Isn't that what they say about cats, that they are just a bunch of assassins :P and out to kill us, humans, :P I mean, I've seen videos where I seriously wouldn't have been surprised if the cat was actually out to kill the human lol.

A traumatizing event, oh boy, are you ok now?

I will look out for the email and story about that..

Tell Cora, that I do expect her to behave though as I would not be amused reading about your passing by a murderous cat :)

Yes, crafty fur assassins who use their cuteness to get free room and board lol! I don't care if they are secretly in a cabal and trying to end me, I love my cats!

I'm good, it's just been a bit of an emotionally taxing week, too much adulting, I need to go have some fun or something.

And Cora is always by my side, I relayed your message and now feel pretty good about my survival prospects 😁

Thanks for sharing. I don't think I will grow anything this season. I feel pretty bad about that. 🙃

Oh! No need to feel bad! I'm sure there's going to be someone around you who plants too many zucchini (or other plants) and would love to share, lol!

Thanks for stopping by!

Northern hemisphere gardeners are so organised, given that tiny window of opportunity that you have

Aww, @nikv, you so understand the ways of the Force, ha ha! And you are beyond right, it's a somewhat organized melee for us gardener Northies lol!

Hope those succulents and kitties are doing well😊

Thank you! Right now, it's too cold and wet for anything: we have our first taste of winter and some rain although winter won't truly begin for another month

Is the marigolds for looks, or another purpose?

Aside from looks, they also attract beneficial insects, deer don't eat them, they repel nematodes and other harmful pests like cabbage worms, and overall are just a super cool plant to have around!

Cool! I was thinking that. I actually am going to plant some around my garden. I knew they attract Lacewigs, but not everything you mentioned! Very cool plant indeed:)

I live in Alabama and they do not know what Rhubarb is? Literally, when I ask about it in grocery stores the reply was, "What's that?" Seeing your rhubarb growing made my mouth water. Thanks for sharing.

LOL! It still surprises me how many people hate rhubarb or don't know what it is. Red Celery is something I have heard said before, it cracks me up!

And I hope you find some rhubarb soon!

I just have the old cat with dementia to deal with. Fortunately, at 100 years old, she sleeps most of the time...

I've not been out to check the rhubarb, but the big quince buds are swelling...

Oh, I sorta miss having an elder sleepy-time kitty, all of the one's around here are under 5, lol! been a while since I had a 100 year old one LOL!

And mmm, quince... My chestnut tree, birches, lilacs, and blueberry bushes are all doing that bud swelling thing, I get so excited every time I look at them!

It looks like you are having quite a bit of fun. Just wondering, but is the marigolds only for Christmas, or do you have other plans for the flowers?

Oh, my grandma gave me the seeds for Christmas, the flowers I just plan on growing, saving the seed heads, and growing even more the following year. Marigolds are a really beneficial flower to have around, especially in the garden. They attract beneficial insects and repel pests!

What a lovely gift, I'd be very excited to get a little bag of marigold seed heads with '20 acres' writ upon it! have fun. I'm in the midst of making a new Veg garden area, and having to fence it all of course as we've so many deer and rabbit. Good luck with your seedlings @generikat

Oh wow, I hear ya on the fencing, I have 8 foot tall deer fencing around my garden, a high strength type of netting to keep everything out, because there is nothing worse than working hard all growing season and Bambi or Bugs come in and wipe out your entire crop in one night lol! Good luck to you too!!

Wow, look at you go! At this point my garden is just a distant thought in my head. Living in Michigan we still have some hard frosts ahead of us I imagine. It isn't usually until the middle of May that I get my plants in the ground. I think I am just going to do some cherry tomatoes and zucchini this year. Oh, and some flowers to bring in the bees. We will see how that goes. I have a tendency to kill things. I found your post on List Nerds.

Oh wow! Your last frost date is about the same as ours. Typically May 15-20 is our last frost date, but we can get frosts every month of the year here, yuck, lol! I use a lot of season extending techniques and sow quite a few cold hardy crops so I can get started a bit earlier.

Oof, the zukes and cherry tomatoes will definitely keep you busy, I often wish all plants were as prolific as those two haha! I hope it goes well for you and thanks for stopping by, Listnerds is awesome!!

Thanks, I appreciate it. Yeah, I am guessing we are close to the same latitude or something like that. I'd guess we are maybe a little further south, but who knows. The problem is my wife and I travel a lot in the summer, so I have to rely on the rain for most of my water. It usually hampers my production. A couple years ago I got hardly any zukes from what I have heard is almost impossible to do. Leave it to me!

Oh, I am all about not trying to do it All these days, so I totally get not trying to garden if you travel a lot. Plus traveling is awesome and there's always a farmers market somewhere lol!

And congrats on that no zukes thing! I didn't know that could be done lol lol!

Haha, thanks. I think it was an issue with pollination. That's why I started to plant some flowers around the other plants.
