Unexpected Change-tasticness!

As many of you know, this past year has been a bit of a piece of raggedy toilet paper stuck to my shoe, well, in the health department at least. I know I should probably not make light of health struggles, but one of my favorite coping mechanisms is humor, especially the self-deprecatory kind.

That said, over the past few weeks I have been getting...worse, like barely functional, am I devolving into an amoeba worse.

IMG_8516.jpg

Cora doing her best impersonation of me.

Since I had my bi-annual tribute to the medical cartel coming up, I figured if there was anything awry they would maybe catch it, but honestly, I'm used to feeling pretty awful at this point.

Well, I got salmon slapped right in the life-change sector of existence at my doc's visit.

To start with, I got to meet my new doc, a PA actually. Her dad was the practice doc at our office and has been retired from practicing for quite a while. I liked her instantly. I really liked her when she told me she did her fellowship at the Functional Medicine Institute.

However, once she got down to business I quickly became aware that this wasn't just going to be a blood draw and bolt typical doc's visit.

Let's just say my carcass is in a state of inflammatory unhappiness and my new doc was actually impressed that I even function at all. I'm not going to go into any great detail about all my ailments, some possibly scary diagnosis possibilities, and all the other medical jazz, but there was one thing that she dropped on me that has really upended my life.

I am allergic to dairy.

And I am not allergic in the way a person is who has a life threatening response, nope, my allergy is the kind where it just puts my body in a constantly-inflamed antibody forming and attacking my carcass misery.

As I sat there listening to her break down how it all worked, my existential pattern horror started increasing. My friends, I have always hated milk. Like, despised it. But I absolutely adore butter, cream, and cheese.

Let's just say I had a bit of a ponder and a pout on the way home.

But I have had practice at this eating without foods allowed thing, For ten years it was assumed I was allergic to beef. The reality is, I have a reaction to public beef. I have been eating my homegrown, grass fed beef for years now with no adverse health reactions at all (my thyroid used to swell my throat shut when I ate public beef).

So, I am going to cut out dairy for awhile, One, to see if I start feeling better, because let me tell you, the last month has been especially miserable. And two, once I get un-inflamed and my immune system quits trying to destroy my form, then I am going to try introducing certain items of raw, grass fed dairy back into my diet.

IMG_8515.jpg

Because honestly, I could look at this whole change in a couple of ways. I could pout, throw a fit, eat dairy anyway and get sicker, and just be miserable, or, I can choose to see this as what it is, a thing I get to grow and learn from. You all know I love to cook and bake, so now I get to do that in a different way. It might even fun.

It's all about mindset anyway, right?

That said, I'd really like to dip my mindset in garlic butter right now...

Guess it's going to take a few days to get my mindset fully on the non-dairy track.

And as not most of the time, the cover image is from Pixabay because I didn't want to go look at any of the delightful dairy products in my fridge, the other images were my own from my very dairy-free iPhone.

When I stopped inputting dairy my eczema cleared up dramatically. I think a whole lot more people are sensitive or allergic to dairy than realize it. The hardest thing for me has been cheese as I have always loved it but we found Violife non-dairy that is the best we have tried. It took a while for my head to adjust to no dairy and even still I have hankerings for nice aged extra sharp cheddar and cottage cheese. Good luck on your dairy sabbatical.

I've been following your health trials and I am so glad to hear that, truly. And I think you are right about a lot of people having unrealized dairy issues, especially after hearing about the advances in our understanding of how our body's allergic responses work.

I've heard good things about Violife and my friend who is dairy free has enjoyed the Daiya mozzarella and said I should give the Miyoko's liquid mozzarella a try. Because I, like you, are the most sad about cheese.

That said, I love a good ol culinary experiment, so I'm sure I will be posting about my adventures in non-dairy cheese land soon lol!

Thanks and good luck to you too!

I have not heard of Miyoko but we found it and will be trying it to contrast and compare. Thank you for another option!

I really think it is the old adage of "you are what you eat" and when the food we eat was raised on shitty food we ingest shitty food. Economy of scale only works so far then the detrimental sides dominate and far outweigh the benefits. Dairy is a hard one to make work in scale and why I think so many are having problems.

Soon you will be making !PIZZA like @jacobtothe, or at least you will have another point to pontificate upon during game nights.

I can't wait to hear of your opinions on the Miyoko! Yesterday, I made cheeseburgers with some Daiya cheddar slices and my feelings weren't hurt at all. Probably because I slathered my burger in some homemade, smoky, sugar-free BBQ sauce lol!

Your shitty food adage hits home for me. A lot of my health problems over the years seem to have spawned from starting out life on a homesteading and wild food diet and then having to eat mostly processed food from the store diet for a bit due to circumstances beyond our family's control when I was about ten-eighteen. Looking back I can see a very strong correlation to our extreme diet change and my descent into autoimmune misery.

And your comments on economy of scale really make a lot of sense. I knew a lot of dairy farmers as a kid who had between 200-1000 cows, now a 10-30K cow dairy is the norm. It's always about the Benjamins.

I had to laugh a bit about the JT and Kat pontifications. I've been making him dairy-free treats and eats for quite a few years, now we get to enjoy even more of them lol!

Hope you are feeling well😊

I adored dairy of all kinds but on May 1, 1994 overnight I became 100% lactose intolerant. For 13 years I avoided dairy like the pain plague it was for me.

Then I was coerced into trying raw milk kefir and I suddenly could eat dairy again. That lasted from 2008 until 2018 when I slowly lost dairy again. I can tolerate tiny amounts of cream and butter (raw) and hard cheeses.

I hope the inflammatory response does stop for you and given my experience, raw milk products might work.

Oh, you have went through the dairy doldrums! That sounded terrible!

I am encouraged you are having luck eating a bit of raw dairy, it makes me have hope that one day I might nibble on some smoked cheddar once again😊

It's been 48 hours and already I am feeling a bit better, and I hope you are feeling better too, we both have a work-filled summer ahead of us!

I would be happy to share some dairy-free recipes and experiences with you! I eat a lot less dairy than I used to, because of the dairy-sensitive family member, and now the naturopath says I'm limited to mozzarella and cottage cheese, and no sour cream, parmesan, or cheddar. (that's another story) I understand your pain.

I would love to hear some of your recipes and experiences!

It occurred to me the other day that thanks to JT, I have a bunch of dairy-free recipes in my repertoire already, so I'm ahead of the game.

That said, I am sorry to hear that you are restricted in dairy-land too, when we get around to actually having tea together I guess we will have all sorts of non immune system triggering treats lol!

Damn that sucks. I always say this life would have been more fun if I had only been given a different body.

My son is allergic to it as well. Soymilk is what he has to use. He is able to do a pizza with cheese on it once a week or so.

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Oh I feel so bad for your son! I'm glad he can tolerate a pizza once in a while, that's my kid's favorite food group lol!

And I so hear you on the different body thing. I mean, I am thankful and love life, but there are just some days I'm a bit on the grr and grumble train when it comes to this faulty carcass. We can commiserate together I suppose lol!

Hope all is well back yonder!

Oh I totally missed this, I saw another post where you mentioned it and went back to read this.. That must have been a bombshell and I agree, I don't like milk either but butter (real butter lol) I would have a hard time figuring out how to replace that..

I'm sure you will figure it out though, I will keep my eyes on your content and hope you get better soon <3

Morning! And seriously, thank you for all the awesomeness😊

I'm not going to lie, I really, really miss cheese the most, it's one of my favorite foods, and as much as the texture and taste of the non dairy types have improved, it's still not the same.

That said, I feel a ton better, so that makes the effort a bit easier to bear.

Hope all is beyond well on your side of the pond!
