Before The Frost is the first novel in the Wallander cycle featuring Linda, the daughter of the commissioner created by Henning Mankell./ Antes De Que Hiele es la primera novela del ciclo Wallander que tiene como protagonista a Linda, la hija del comisario creado por Henning Mankell.

Good weekend to all the #literaryhivers,

today I want to share with all of you a novel by the great Swedish writer Henning Mankell - deceased in 2015 - who became famous worldwide with the saga dedicated to the popular Ystaad commissioner - the city really exists in southern Sweden near the strait that connects it with Denmark and is a pilgrimage goal of all the fans of the author and his literary alter ego - Kurt Wallander.

Personally I discovered this novel a bit late, after having read the whole series, including the last one The Restless Man. Perhaps it is because in Italy - the country where I was living at the time - this novel was not published in the chronological order that corresponded to it.

Or simply because I did not notice its publication at the right time. The truth is that I have just finished reading it and I want to share with all the literary #hivers of this Community a brief review.

I want to point out a couple of things before I start with the real review of my own.

First of all, Before the Frost , the penultimate novel by Henning Menkell dedicated to Kurt Wallander, is from 2002 and it is the first one in which the main character is the daughter of the inspector who is about to join the police force, or rather, the historical figure of his father, Commissioner Kurt Wallander, joins that of his daughter, Linda.

And secondly, in an unusual case in Mankell's novels -despite the fact that they often refer to real events- it starts from a real, catastrophic event (we could call it the prologue) and ends in the same way (which would be the epilogue). And it is not a play on words. Let me explain myself better.

Those of us who are very young may not remember it, but those of us who are already combing gray hair lived it almost directly with the scarce media that existed at the time. The news that went around the world in a few hours in all the newspapers reported that a preacher named Jim Jones, creator of the sect called People's Temple, in what was one of the most shocking collective suicides, poisoned with cyanide all his followers in Jonestow (Guyana) among which were more than 200 children. Jones' body was found with the remaining 912 corpses and his death was caused by a gunshot wound to the head, presumably in an act of suicide.

The epilogue of the book refers to September 11. The characters who have been part of the plot of this novel from the first pages watch the news on TV, stunned, seeing how the Twin Towers are attacked and destroyed and Wallander himself reprimands them all at the police headquarters saying "something is happening in the USA."

While this final part is totally removed from the overall plot of the book, when Mankell was asked why this decision was made, he argued that it was a kind of reminder, a subtle dedication and a stimulus for reflection to realize what extremism, whether religious or political, can lead to. He warned that many of the traits we see in these fanatical characters can sometimes -to a lesser extent- be found within ourselves.

Following in the footsteps of her father, Inspector Kurt Wallander, Linda faces her first investigation on the eve of taking over the Ystaad police force.

Me explico mejor.

Linda, Kurt Wallander's daughter, has decided to follow in her father's footsteps after having tried in vain to find her vocation through the fine arts and other trades, and returns to Ystaad, the city where she was born, to join the local police force.

As the days pass before she takes up her assignment, she takes the opportunity to renew old friendships, among them two childhood and youthful friends: Anna and Zebra. In the meantime, and while waiting for the Swedish police to assign her an apartment, she lives with her father, although the filial relationship is not entirely idyllic.

As the days go by and the date for her to put on her police uniform approaches, her friend Anna disappears. At the same time, on the outskirts of Ystaad, in the woods where there is a castle owned by a broker, they find the corpse of a woman (although the word corpse is a bit incomplete). What they actually find are the remains of a person (the head and two hands intertwined as if in the act of prayer).

The macabre discovery finds Kurt Wallander and his collaborators totally disoriented. And Anna's disappearance (which Linda surreptitiously begins to investigate without initially making it known to her father) goes unnoticed. While she goes ahead on her own with the investigation, she will meet agent Stefan Lindman (the protagonist of The Return of the Dancing Professor), who will make a very good impression on her, revealing himself to be an excellent colleague, sympathetic at times when she tells him about her quarrels with her parents (Lindman himself tells her that in the past he has suffered from a cancer of the tongue, fortunately overcome), making her see the true value of life.

The quiet life in Ystaad begins to be abruptly altered by seemingly unconnected events: an anonymous caller with a slight foreign accent reports that someone - actually the same person - has set fire to a group of swans that have begun to fly away engulfed in flames, a calf is found burned alive in a barn, and a scholar of the ancient forest trails in the Swedish Scania has disappeared without a trace - later to be discovered to be the mutilated corpse.

Although the events don't seem to connect Linda and her father begin to glimpse a sort of spiral that may link them. Linda continues to investigate the disappearance of her friend Anna, and Inspector Wallander and his team continue to investigate the rest of the facts.

At a certain point, and seeing the contribution she was giving to the investigations despite not yet wearing a police uniform (and also because the local police is short-staffed) Lisa Holgersson, chief of police of Ystaad and Wallander's direct supervisor, decides to integrate Linda to the group of investigators always next to another policeman.

Lina is in a transitional phase and Wallander takes the opportunity to continuously insert details of the contrasts between Linda and her father, Linda and her mother and Linda and her friends. September will soon arrive and with it a new stage in her life will begin.

Linda's past, her contrasts with her father, her excellent relationship with her grandfather, are continually taken up by Mankell, who inserts them into the flow of the narrative. The reader encounters many small sketches of Linda Wallander's former life and already looks forward with her to the imminent new beginning.

Hence the name of the book, which signifies a change of season, not only climatically but also a new direction in Linda's life: before the frost arrives, she will have to put on her uniform and start a new life, a new journey into adulthood.

As the plot progresses (it is a book of almost a thousand pages) many secrets in Anna's life are discovered. The father who ran away when she was little is actually one of the survivors of the Guyana tragedy (the link that connects the book with the prologue). After moving to the U.S. and trying to commit suicide, he found a new way to continue living by modifying the doctrine of Jim Jones, whom he ends up describing as a "fallen angel", someone who betrayed God's own principles, according to his particular interpretation.

He has formed a small sect of which the son of a millionaire Norwegian shipowner (the one who had given fire to the swans) is a member and they plan to destroy a part of society (starting with eleven Swedish cathedrals) through attacks with dynamite, according to them impure, to make him rise from the ashes like the phoenix, in a delirious religious fanaticism that knows no limits, to the point of ending up killing his own daughter.

It seems that Wallander left the ending open because all the members of the sect are arrested, one commits suicide, but Erik Westin, Anna's father, the main responsible, escapes. However, he was never again incorporated as a character in the remaining novels of the Wallander cycle.

The book ends with Linda saving a young woman who tries to commit suicide by throwing herself off a roof, an attitude that reminds her of when -years before- she herself tried -in a state of mind of total constipation- to do the same by throwing herself off a bridge and was saved by another young policewoman.

It is a different book by Henning Mankell, more complex and denser, voluminous in its most perfect expression, where he goes very well from the particular to the general, making the reading very easy and pleasant.

It is a kind of summary of Wallander's life, where his daughter iruumpe already as his colleague or subordinate, but which in turn is a back and forth with the past, with the relationship with his mother Mona, with his grandfather, with his father and some violent aspects of repressed cellera of which until now we did not know its origins, and with his own past.

Although the work begins and ends with acts of rebellious fundamentalism, it always turns on a more general and human level.

We are in the presence of a thriller different from the rest, with a very broad scope, which shows us the most familiar face -and not always shown by the mass media- of religious fundamentalism, perhaps the one that most resembles us and is part of the human condition itself.
