Spotted Optimism Hacker on Twitter with Fake Account - Beware of Fake Airdrop Announcement...

Today while browsing my twitter feed, it came to my attention about an Airdrop claim which was tied to Optimism Airdrop Round 2. Normally we tend to be very excited when we hear about Airdrops. The rush to claim the Airdrop is such that we forget to do the basic checks on the **URLs [Uniform Resource Locators] that we are visiting. Todays' hack around Airdrop claim of Optimism Airdrop Round 2 is one such example, where users checking on the URLs can easily make out if its a scam website or a legit website. Here is the fake twitter account trying to forge the real "@optimismFND" twitter account.

Just see the extra "xyz" being followed here i.e. "@optimismFNDxyz" ---> this is the fake twitter account. Just think for a second why would a legit company would use an random characters like -"xyz" or "abc" or "123" at the last of their name as their identity on any social media portal. This is our first indicator to catch hold of these hackers and not fall prey to their Phishing Attacks. The hacker has used the shortener url service to redirect users to the fake website, where their payload is hosted. Here is the snapshot of the fake website [optimism-airdrop.net] where the shortener url -- beacons.ai/optimism [please do not visit this website] redirects the users to connect to a fake website to connect their wallet and once they do they ultimately loose control of their funds.

The best thing to do is to do a quick "domain lookup" of a website that your visiting. In doubt, just do a domain lookup for the website and see the details when the domain was registered, for how many years its registered, who is its registrant and other information. Here the domain up of [optimism-airdrop.net] that I did from godaddy WHOIS Database

Highlighted in red you can see the fake website [optimism-airdrop.net] purporting to be optimism.io is recently created i.e. on March 3rd and excatly after One Year the domain expires.. Its nothing but an another indication that the website in question which is [optimism-airdrop.net] is suspicious and as users we need to be very carefully so that we do not loose any of our hard earned money to these hackers or scammers or the bad guys.

The final thing to be careful about is that there is no such thing as FREE. And if its FREE you need to be very carefully with this FREE thing. I was suspicious about this Airdrop at the very first instance when it said that I am eligible for some tokens. While researching and visiting the real optimism.io website I came about the Airdrop details and looking further I came to know that I would not be eligible as I did not do any of the things that was listed on the Airdrop eliglbity criteria for optimism. A person is the best judger for themselves to know if they are eligible for an Airdrop or not. Just by reading some articles one can know about their eliglbity and can take action accordingly. Rather than falling prey to hackers or scammers out there try to cheat/fraud innocent users... Be careful anytime you visit a website that is new to you and you haven't heard about it.. Be safe out there on the internet.. cheers...
