Pain, numbness, tingling, needle prick sensation in the limbs: Peripheral neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy is not an uncommon problem. I get a good number of patients in my chamber with various kinds of symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The problem occurs either damage or abnormalities to the peripheral nerve supply to our limbs. In the majority of people, the problem is more prominent in the lower limbs, mostly in the feet and lower legs.

Sometimes we can find out the reason behind such a problem and sometimes not. Uncontrolled or poorly control diabetes is one of the main causes. However, there are other causes as well.

The prominent features are:

• Pin and needles prick sensation
• Tingling and numbness
• Burning sensation
• Lack of sensation

The first three of them produce more suffering for the patient.

Neuropathic pain is perceived more at night. Why do people get more symptoms at night? No established studies to find out the reason behind this. But we have a theory. During the daytime, we all are distracted by our busy life and works. But, at nighttime, when we take a rest, the distractions go away. So, we perceive all the problems with a higher intensity. Another reason is that there is a comparatively cool environment at night than daytime. Moreover, if there is an air conditioner in our room, we make the room colder. Neuropathic pain increases in cold exposure.

Treating the cause of peripheral neuropathy is the best treatment option. Controlling the blood sugar often results in the resolution of neuropathic symptoms. Some medications also help. Avoiding cold exposure is one of the non-drug methods.
