Rapid weight loss: Good or bad?

(Edited)

Increased body weight is associated with many health issues and is a risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases. Losing weight reduces the risk. Sometimes, we are too motivated to lose weight very quickly. Various kinds of online ads and strict diet plans promise us to lose weight quickly, e.g. 10 pounds in one week. Should we lose weight in such a rapid method?

The answer is no. This type of quick scheme may show some visible results in a few weeks but in the long run, it does more harm than good. How so?

Unfriendly metabolism: Metabolism is the calories burning process in our body. When a person suddenly starts an extreme form of diet and vigorous exercise, our metabolism system enters into survival mode. Assuming that the person is consuming fewer calories, the metabolism process slows down, hence the calories burning process slows down.
When and if the diet period is over (it is quite impossible to maintain an extreme diet for a long time), the person starts eating a regular diet, the slow metabolic system keeps burning calories slowly. It results in a rapid weight gain than before.

Lacking essential nutrients: For optimal health, we need all kinds of nutrients which include fat, cholesterol, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals etc. A strict diet may be deficient in some of the essential nutrients. It may result in some health issues such as fatigue, constipation, reduced immunity, hair loss, loss of bone density etc.

Losing muscle mass: When we are going to reduce our weight, our goal is to burn the extra fat, not the muscle mass. However, the quick methods, most of the time, ends up losing muscles mass as well. Which, in the later period, results in a decrease in calorie burn. Because muscles contribute more to the calories burning process.

Quitting the quick methods: In many cases, after a few days or weeks, the person loses all the enthusiasm to continue the extreme diet and vigorous exercise. And, ends up being more overweight than before.

Slow and steady win the race. This is true in the weight loss race also. We should target less, e.g. 1-2 pounds of weight loss in one week and continue a scientific and feasible diet plan as well as regular exercise.

Good luck to you (and me) in reducing body weight.
