Still a few misconceptions!

Day before yesterday one 19-year-old Egyptian girl came with her mother. She was suffering from fever, cold, cough with phlegm, throat pain, mild shortness of breath, headache, mild upper abdominal pain and 2 episodes of vomiting from the last 2 days. She was a student. Her vitals were within normal limits except for the throat congestion and mild upper abdominal tenderness. Following the history and physical assessment, when I asked her if she wanted to do the COVID19 test, her mother’s eyes became larger. Looked like she just fell from the sky and with a disbelieving face asked me, “Doc! She (daughter) has taken two doses of Pfizer”.

It appeared that she believed that with two doses of Pfizer vaccines her daughter was protected from coronavirus infection. I tried to explain to them the actual scenario.

Yesterday morning one Omani family came to me. The mother and two of her daughters (most probably). One of the daughters brought two of her sons to the child specialist as well. All of them had the features of upper respiratory tract infections i.e. cold, cough, fever, throat pain, body pain etc. The mother and one daughter consulted first. They didn’t want to do the test for COVID19. Another daughter came to me after consulting her two sons with the child specialist. She was having similar symptoms. When I asked her if she wanted to do the COVID test, she told me, “Tabib! Shem, tum adi” (Doc! My smell and taste sensation are normal).

She believed that she would only get COVID when she would lose her smell and taste. Fever, cold and cough were not sufficient for doing the COVID test.

These two are among the many stories we are experiencing every day. Many people are out there who don't have the proper knowledge about the pandemic, even though we are in this for 2 years! We need to circulate the necessary authentic information among the people surrounding us.

The End

Unfortunately myself too six months after getting the second Moderna shot got infected. Someone who's been vaccinated simply won't die from getting this infection, but that doesn't mean that won't be infected at all. Also the vaccination has and should have an expiry date (after six-seven months).

Sorry to hear that you got the disease. However, it is good to know that you recovered from it.

Yes. It looks that way (the vaccines are going to be ineffective after a certain period). we don't know how frequently and how long we need to rely on the booster doses; is that going to be yearly like a flu shot or 6-monthly or something else.

We need to be updated with the proper knowledge and keep following the prevention measures besides taking vaccines.

This is sad that there are people that believe you cannot get a virus if you have had the vaccine. But isn't this true for the flu and any other virus type disease? Slightly different variants than what was in the vaccine or your system is weaker and cannot fight off the virus. Thank you for sharing. Take care.

Yes. That's true. Viruses are evolving to evade the protection, either vaccine made or natural one. We Are experiencing that in this pandemic.

Thanks.

There is a misconception about it but I think it's probably because of the mainstream media. The vaccine won't really stop you from getting infected because the new variants are still mutating and I don't even know how many more times it will happen. I guess the upside is that I have heard that people are less likely to get hit hard by the virus instead.

That's true. We don't know how long and how many times this mutation thing will go on. We need to try our best according to the "options" we have at our hands. Then, keep praying.

The severity of illness is a bit less due to Omicron, in comparison with the delta. Maybe vaccination has a role here.

Thanks for your opinion.

Great post doctor. I would say that probably 70% of my COVID patients have been vaccinated and many of them boosted.
I love the "taste and smell" pt. I have not really seen those symptoms much since the original variant.
I am following you to see what other pearls of wisdom you can bestow.

That's a good proportion who have been vaccinated and boosted.

We can not specify any symptom only to COVID. Whatever the symptoms, we better do the tests.

I don't believe a vaccine to a virus that keeps having different dominant mutations quite often can ever be 100%, no matter if we are talking about Covid or not. I know cases where the flu vaccine coincided with one of the most severe flu episodes experienced (as the persons involved described it, and yes, it's more than one case, and I'm not a doctor to come in contact with patients every day).

Your belief seems to be correct. The mutations of a virus render a vaccine ineffective against that virus.

All I can say is that I can't wait for this nightmare that is the COVID to finally be over with. I have had all 3 doses of the vaccine so I feel relatively safer. But I also am able to be very particular about where and how I spend time. There is too much misinformation and too much politics surrounding this virus. Case numbers are going way down where I live so I am happy to see that at least.

We all want this to be over. But, looks like we all will get it eventually and then maybe it will be over (following herd immunity). Allah knows the best.

It is good to hear that at your place the cases are coming down. But do not let your guard down.

Have an awesome day.

I don't plan on letting my guard down any time soon. I know where I am safe and I those are the only places I go. Hope you start to see some relief where you are. Take care, @hafiz34! Stay healthy safe and !ALIVE

I agree, and with all the misinformation it's confusing and scary. Thankfully, I'm sticking to my guns and not getting jabbed. I don't take flu shots either. (Not here to argue about it) Anyways, I finally had my round with covid over 2 years into this mess. Fever, chills, body aches, slight head cold. Survived it.
I'm glad you're informing people they can still get covid with vax.. sad they think their "immune".
I honestly don't even worry about covid, my concerns is everything else. Jobs, government mandates, family's turning on one another over vax opinions. That's scary to me! So keep informing, we people need answers.

Without taking the jab, if you can lead a comfortable life, there is nothing to worry about. However, it may sometimes create some problems. For example, a few days ago I read an article. It was about removing the name of some organ transplant recipients from the National waiting list because they weren't vaccinated against COVID.

Anyway, good to know that you are doing great.

Have a blissful day.

Thanks, for stopping by.

I haven't heard that yet.. but I'd imagine it's true. I have a friend who has medicaid and she was told the Dr couldn't prescribe anything for her to help with her covid symptoms. But she managed fine without them using otc medications. I was shocked! I honestly don't know why he didn't prescribe her anything, if it was due to her not being vaxed or what. I know he told her he couldn't "treat" her.. cuz she had medicaid. Anyways, times are crazy. Stay well 😊

I believe they should be brought up on charges too! It's not like these are vax like all the others we have.
I have a cousin on a kidney transplant list, good for him he's vaccinated I guess...I pray for him and the rest of my family and everyone else, just as they pray for me. I'm going to follow you. I look forward to future post.

@hafiz34 - it's great having a professional medical authority providing your insight, experience and use cases.

I experienced COVID and it was horrible, but I am also fully vaccinated with the booster. I wouldn't be able to say if I had gotten the vaccine and booster before my COVID experience what would have happened, but it would have been interesting.

My fiancé, her boys and I all caught COVID not too long before the vaccines became available. That was probably the most frustrating outside of the horrible 2 weeks dealing with the virus.

I came by way of ListNerds and upvoting - glad I saw the email 🙏

Although many of us are sceptical about the efficacy of vaccines against COVID, we indeed feel a bit of security or safety after getting the jabs. At least, I feel that way. Alhamdulillah.
