Why Small Business Owners Don't Set Goals

smallbusinessgoals.png

Hello Hustlers! As you see, 2022 is coming with a bit of a theme. Setting goals, even small goals in business are essential for your hustle to succeed. But there is a problem... Most small business owners fail to set effective goals for getting their businesses off the ground.

There are several reasons why small business owners fail to set goals. It’s a common problem and can adversely affect their businesses. Many of the following reasons are the most common reasons why allot of small business owners do not set proper goals. How do I know? Well I am guilty of just about every one of these issues and is why we are so focused on setting goals, large and small goals, from here on.

So what are the main reasons many budding entrepreneurs fail to plan and make set the proper goals?

Afraid of Failure

By setting goals, if the business owner doesn’t meet them, others may see this as failing. This can be a fear for the owner and could be a big reason why they don’t set goals. You cannot let what other people think about you or your business if you fail to reach a goal. If you fail to achieve a goals, there was a reason, so if you are a smart entrepreneur, you will figure out why you didn't reach your goal, learn from the mistakes, and move forward. You also cannot be afraid of accountability. It's important to have people checking on you to see how well you are moving forward in achieving your goals.

They Are Not Sure How

This is one of the biggest reasons why small business owners avoid setting goals; they don’t know how. It’s one thing to list a bunch of desires and another entirely to create a plan that may actually move a company forward. As the law of attraction seems like a good warm and fuzzy concept, you have to set a plan of attack to achieve your desires, they are not just going to jump off of the dream board at you. Making a plan of action to achieve even the smallest steps will help you keep moving forward.

Afraid of Success

Sometimes just as people are afraid of failing, they can be just as afraid of succeeding. Many times you will wonder, can your business handle the success? Can you handle the success? If you set goals, you may have to take on more activities such as hiring and expansion of facilities, etc. This is a good problem to have. This means you are doing something right!

Will Be Held Accountable

When you make your goals official, you now have a roadmap that holds you accountable. This means that the expectation is much higher and can put unnecessary pressure on these already busy owners. This is something I have struggled with when trying to come up with some solid goals, I don't have anyone really to make me accountable for achieving them other than me. But now, when you have a community that is looking to you and wanting to know how you plan to grow and succeed, it makes you accountable to something more than just yourself.

Too Time Consuming

It takes time to brainstorm ideas and to create tasks that are associated with the goals. This is time taken away from core business functions. Unless they have employees to take up the slack, many business owners are sole employees and have to manage the day-to-day activities. These tasks can often become incredibly time consuming, but it is important to come up with some goals so you can figure out why you are working so hard in the first place.

Why Bother? You Are the Only Employee

This was covered somewhat in the previous paragraph but when you are the only employee in your business, why do you have to come up with
goals? Many small business owners think they know what needs to get done, but they are really lying to themselves. If you plan to just go with it, you will find yourself struggling to move forward and succeed. But if you set a solid schedule for yourself, it helps you create a plan of attack to help you achieve at least a daily goal. Again, it's not always looking long term, because lets be real, life can change on a dime.

Just Go with the Flow

Many smaller business owners are under the impression that they can just wing it, i.e., to go with the flow. The belief is that whatever is going to happen will just happen as if it's meant to be. Setting up goals is a waste of time for people who feel this way.

While there are business owners who have been successful without setting goals, most struggle with their business. In fact, this could be the single reason why a majority of small businesses won’t last past a couple of years. By having a roadmap, they are in a much better position to see what is working and what needs help.

Excellent!!
It's good I found this article before I posted my Goals

Many smaller business owners are under the impression that they can just wing it, i.e., to go with the flow. The belief is that whatever is going to happen will just happen as if it's meant to be. Setting up goals is a waste of time for people who feel this way.

That's the line that I decided to change my goals.
last year January to November I decided to go with the flow and I made a total of just 16 hives, but only in December that I took things a bit seriously, I got 13 hives in addition that was because I made a decision to show up every day.
This year am about to make the same mistake if I decide to go with the flow. I will have to take the serious way now.
thanks for the article 👍

I agree with you. From my point of view being a small business owner is like being in a small rowboat out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Every mistake made is epic, and will shrink a small boat much fast than a large ship.
I use goal setting to prevent apathy and getting too comfortable. Great article excellent value :-D
