The Fate of Pedicab in the Era of Sophistication of Technology
In general, residents of Lhokseumawe City still use this three-wheeled passenger vehicle for urban transportation.
The locals refer to the passenger vehicle as the "Pedicab" and it has been modified so that different kinds of motorbikes power it. So it can also be called a motorized rickshaw.
Ideally, there are only two passengers in this vehicle. But there are also more passengers than that, as needed. Transportation routes are also limited to urban areas, which are better known as the "Inter-City Passenger Transport" line.
Uniquely, from time to time, the cost of this vehicle transportation service is not determined by the official price from the local government. However, it is determined by the rickshaw owner and the service user. with various bid prices according to the distance to be traveled.
The closest distance is charged around Rp. 5,000 (equivalent to $0.32). For the farthest distance around Rp. 20,000 (equivalent to $1.28) or even more according to the offering price.
The existence of pedicabs in Lhokseumawe City is often used by residents as a means of transportation for their children to go to and from school and also when shopping.
At certain hours, the local city will always be colored by the sight of pedicabs lining up and waiting for passengers.
This is one of the residents' favorite shopping centers that are directly opposite the regional government buildings.
My friends, wherever you are!
The choice of the theme of becak, a mode of urban transportation, is to share experiences between continents and also more or less repeat my memories of pedicab because, before, I had worked as a pedicab driver.
Old pictures of my rickshaw are shown here.
Will this three-wheeled passenger vehicle be able to survive in today's sophisticated era? I think we can see the answer in the next few decades.

I love seeing this type of transportation. Imagine if they were all cars instead. The roads would be an absolute nightmare to be on. Unfortunately, as towns prosper, less and less bemos, rickshaws etc are seen. But what of the owners? How do they then earn a living? Does prosperity of a town actually cause more poverty?
@watusiwoman, you are right.
Congestion is a further problem if it is not supported by infrastructure. In my opinion, the prosperity of an ideal city should be directly proportional to the economy of the lower classes. because its existence has become a cultural value in itself. Now, the challenge lies in the role of stakeholders in formulating this cultural potential. so that it becomes the hallmark of an area and is also able to attract tourists like you.
Thanks for the views.
