A Plea to the Rain (An Attempt at Poetry)

avatar
(Edited)

I've been reading poems in the last few weeks and had me wondering whether I could ever come up with my own. Even asked on LeoThreads where poets here on the Hive blockchain get their inspirations from. One suggested meditation. Although I get a lot of silent moments daily, quieting my mind has been a challenge and it's still a work in progress.

The heavy summer rain yesterday afternoon however reminded me of one which I wrote and published in another platform sometime in 2021. I'd say it was inspired by the nonstop rains which wrecked havoc in some places in the region at that time. It was on the 18th day of the downpours and winds when I had this written and figured to share them here with a few edits.

Do note that this was my very, very first attempt at creating rhymes so please bear with it.😊

Rain, rain would you please go away?
My farms, my plants all are weary.
Soil drenched, smelling foul soaking wet;
Tree branches broken but can they fret?

Pepper buds all brown and fallen,
Fruits all gone, blown away by thy friend the wind.
Where could they be this time of day?
Gusts had taken them so far away.

You had us jailed in our little kingdom,
To travel somewhere, I'm quite frightened.
Almost everywhere are landslides and floods;
Mama Earth is crying aloud.

My soul is weeping, goods had been destroyed,
Where shall they get the nation's food?
There's gloom and doom somewhere downtown;
Homes not so safe on less higher grounds.

Come again at a time another;
You have had your days but not any longer.
Let mighty sun come at once for a breather
My feet freezin' they need a warmer.

The sun shall come one day soon,
You'll give way too, I know you would.
Go some place else, where sun hath shone so long,
Quench their thirst, they'd feel so good.

I thank the Heavens for our safe abode
Though winds blew and heavy rain poured.
Grounds unshaken, our roofs are good,
My heart's so warm with much gratitude.

a

Rain is good and I love it when it comes around but obviously NOT when it lingers on and on without a break like it did a few years back. So much so when it brings damages to properties, livelihood or blocks access roads. There was even a time in 2018 when we had 2 months of straight rains which wasn't pleasant at all. Such a time made us yearn so much for the sunshine and therefore, had a hate relationship with the rain then, lol!

Anyway, this is all for today and hope to be able to polish my writing skills and do a lot better next time as I learn from others around here.

Meanwhile, it's the new week for us, yey! So here's to a fabulous Monday!

Photos and texts are my own. 27032023/10:22ph

Smile... laugh often... love more... be happy and grateful always!

Aww that's a nice poetry by you and it remind me the famous childhood rhyme "Rain rain go away, come again another day, little children want to play, rain rain go away"

I hope your farm will be safe and I love people who shows gratitude. Have a wonderful day/night my friend!

Oh now I am gonna have to publish one I wrote many many years ago as a lad in school. I wrote it in a single English Class and although I was amazed it came to me so fast, it was always a subjective dream of mine to be the man in the poem. I will see if I can find a copy of it and put it up in the appropriate categories.

I liked your poem, by the way. Poems do not always rhyme. Sometimes, they are simply about framed thoughts in sequence to create a series of mental imagery.

That's something to look forward to, Michael. Hope you can find it soon :)

Poems do not always rhyme

This is true. I'm learning it as I keep reading poems here on chain. The words just flow and thus make us imagine what the poet or writer is talking about. That, I have to learn :)

Good day sis.

Nice capture, nice rhyme, rains is cool 😎 but there are times we would need the sun too. That’s just life, and when it’s sunny days we miss the rain.

Nice write up.

The Pachamama suffers for her impertinent and naive children. The punishment for such daring is our suffering from natural catastrophes.

Beautiful natural poem, your lyrics are emotional and striking, you write very well. Learning is the continuum of writing and reading.
Thanks for sharing.
Good day.

Many thanks for your appreciation and kind remarks. And true, learning is how we can improve and that we shall keep doing.

Have a wonderful day to you as well.

This poem is so beautiful, it shows us how important the rain is, however, could be a destroyer if it pours non-stop. Thanks for sharing.

Is that the one in 2018 when huge landslides happened in Kennon Road? That was the same year when we were flooded several times.

Yes. Many were flooded that time and also lots of landslides.

This is a beautiful poetry you've got. You can even go as far to cry when it doesn't just rain alone but couple with Storm and thunder...

We expirences that here alot in Africa even when it is no where near the raining season and it can be so scary sometimes.

Indeed rain is good we all know that but not like non stop as you already said, thanks for sharing this beautiful poetry with us.

Thank you Samantha. It seems we do experience various rain situations, both good and not.

Many thanks and I appreciate you for your kind remarks.😍

I think I have read this poem earlier in read.cash also. Poetry is such kind of thing which I don't try anymore because it seems difficult one for me. But I love to enjoy rainy weather 🙂.

The way you started, I thought you were going to continue with the "rain rain go away" rhyme lines 😅

Just like you, I'm still trying to wrap my hands around poetry but we get better after every trial right?.

This is actually nice for your first trial. If only the rain could hear your pleas and not longer on for too long.

Haha, it would have been very easy to do that, lol! And true, we get better when we keep trying and practicing😉

The rains are good these days :)

I'm also an amateur poet so I've realized that there are levels to this things. If you hadn't said it was your first attempt, I'd honestly never have guessed. I enjoyed your poem immensely and I'm looking forward to more of it from you.❤️

Yes so I'm always amazed at how poets express their thoughts in very short verses. Perhaps one day, we can do that too :)

Thank you lots, sis and happy new day ❤️

I am writing to you from the biggest drought in recent history where I live, waiting for the rainy season to come.... Poetry, in my case, is similar, drought followed by a storm of words. I think the best thing to do is to propose it and forget it, not to force it, until at some point the mind goes into poetic mode... Of course, it's all very personal, and everyone has their own particular method. Your poem, by the way, is not bad at all, it's far from being an "attempt", I hope you can write more often! Have you tried writing without rhyme? Maybe you can let the writing flow better without the pressures of rhyme. Cheers!

Hope the rain comes to you sooner.

This might be the best indeed. Forcing the mind to come up with something would either yield a good one or something awful hehe. I haven't tried writing without rhymes yet. Would try it soon and see how it plays😊

Thank you lots and cheers!
