Closet Thoughts: Can We Give Some of These Away?

When you're young, the temptation is maybe to think, 'More is more.' But a lot of the time less is more.

- Daniel Ricciardo

Ketut Subiyanto

I had been to my parents bedroom many times over last month while attending to mom. And I was throwing this question in my mind, "Can we give some of these away?" as I gazed upon their wall-to-wall closet. I didn't say it out loud because mother has gotten so sensitive and might misunderstand what I meant. But I honestly cringed every time I see it. Not that it is messy in the real sense, but it has so much in the whole space that it's looking like a bubble ready to explode anytime soon.

There isn't any room for anything to get in there. Even the extension which they had installed to accommodate the others is filled with their stuff too. There were boxes on the floor and I feel kind of stuffy (suffocated) just by the sight of all of them. The irony is they don't even get to use most of what's in that space. I teased mom at one time saying their closet is like a shop full of stuff. She just giggled. I was almost tempted to say the question that had been playing on my mind but decided to hold it in.

How is your closet looking like? Are you someone who loves buying things that you end up not using anyway?

Too often than not, we collect things because it feels good, isn't it? There's that "yey" moment when we get them. But then the "yey" fades away and we end up just leaving the stuff somewhere amongst all the others. Yet we do the same thing again, buying another and some more - the vicious cycle repeats.

I was the same before, until I learned to let go. It wasn't easy at first, kinda tough to give away the things especially those that I hold dear thinking they are important. There was a push and pull reaction during the sorting session but after getting rid of some, it felt better so I gave more of my stuff away. Not only did my side of the closet looked better and freer, it felt really satisfying too.

Would you do the same and experience the joy of living the "less is more" way of life?

Meanwhile, it's a gorgeous hump day for us here in the mountains. The sun is peeking now and then and the clouds hover over the sky above us. I was up late, feeling rather out of whack. Thankfully, the husband was so kind and considerate that he let me enjoy my snooze time as he made breakfast and waited until it was around 8 am to wake me up so we could eat.

Anyhow, have a lovely day (night) wherever you are!

I get how you are feeling about the full-space closets, I do feel choked at times as well, and the feelings that come with decluttering them are heavenly.

I use to take things i don't use and dash them out every now and then and it do makes me free and refresh.

But for my sisters, and mom they are keepers. You will found so many things of many years stocks up in their houses and I just wonder how they cope.

How is your closet looking like?

This is my home office / man cave closet. It is on my to-do list to clean up. Yes, I have stuff in it that I don't use that I should just sell or give away. Eventually I will get around to cleaning it up and most likely will make a post about it😀.

Thank you for sharing your mancave space, Joe :) I'm sure you will have it cleaned and I look forward to reading about your experience :)

Hey @coinjoe, then you should have a look at Hive Thrifted and see how you could earn HBD/ Hive/ Hive Engine tokens by selling your 2nd hand goods right here on Hive. How about it? Leave them lying here in a post waiting for a buyer, instead of it collecting dust? Take a peek there - I think you may have seen it if my memory serves me right?

I sure did forget. Thanks for reminding me @lizelle 😀. It might be a while before I get to cleaning this mess of a closet out. It is low on the priority list right now.

I have to clean out my garage as well. It is a little higher on the priority list. Although most of what I will be getting rid of in it is actually junk a.k.a. broken stuff. If I find anything someone might want I will list it.

She's the same with my mom.. She also likes keeping things, even old clothes that we are not wearing... I learned to let go of mine, especially when thinking about others who might need my unnecessary stuff more than me. I couldn't agree more..less is more..

Meanwhile, the weather here is gloomy again after seeing sun for two consecutive days. The sun seems doesn't want to show up for long..lol..

My sister is someone who is fund of buying the things that she does not need or she won't even use and it will just become a burden inside the house.
It will make that place look dusty and cobweb will be everywhere...

I hope your sister will realize and stop doing so. It's a waste buying things when we don't use them.

It's about that satisfaction in giving away stuff we held so dear. I've done it a few times and I noticed that I felt considerably lighter. It was like I uncluttered my heart and not just the closet, lol. Quite a refreshing experience I must say. So, I'm glad you did it and that you felt peaceful afterwards.🤗

Yes, that's it. Like a burden or baggage has been lifted off the shoulders when decluttering and giving stuff to others who need them more than we do. It's incredibly freeing :)

Thank you darling. Glad you did the same thing.

I know exactly how you feel about clutter. Maybe you can ask your mom nicely if she needs assistance with going through the clothes?
I declutter every so often - I give to charity or people in need. I also buy less but I have never liked shopping so it is easy. More is less - I am really happy when my space is free up.

Thank you, I may try to do that when we I get the chance :) We will be there tomorrow.
It's nice that you don't shopping, I don't either but the husband seems to have gotten addicted to online shopping. I had to remind him to stop buying unnecessary things.

Its like Mom, but on different things naman, she has a lot of things na kinikeep pa rin nya until today and she is not even using it today, and everytime na sasabihan namin na ipamigay na or itapon, she will get mad at us and sadabihin pa nya, "Saka nyo na itapon kapah dedz na ako." Kapag ganyan ill keep quiete nalang (≧▽≦)

When I was younger, I don't give out my clothes even when it stops fitting me. I make sure I wear them till it's worn out, lol. Meanwhile my elder siblings give me theirs own the clothes don't fit them. I was so possessive.

I guess maturity has made me come out of it.

It's better to let it go than making the house choked up
I don't buy what I don't need and when I am done with what I need that I no longer use them I give it out because I love space in my house

Less is definitely more, something I've become passionate about ever since my son and his girlfriend emigrated. They sold a ton of stuff, and gave to charity, but ran out of time to sell the valuable stuff, so gave it to me. I kept some that I'm using, but have been selling the rest, plus all my clutter, on my yaga.co.za store. Yaga got me thinking about a thrift store here on Hive, where we could sell our goods using HBD/ Hive/ Hive Engine tokens; you may have seen it - Hive Thrifted?
So...I was actually going to ask you if you'd like to promote the community by writing a kind of marketing post as @coquicoin and @crosheille have done.
The only way that will work is for people from the same countries to connect, to save on postage. So...how about it @ifarmgirl? Just a simple blog explaining how it works - you can look at my intro post, and write it in your mother tongue with an English translation of course?

  • Do you read and understand english? If so, may just go back to your post and read the comment "the moderator" left!? You got all infos to the why in there!!
  • If you do not really read and understand english, may say that to "the moderator" and start a converstation, BEFORE you go behind his back, crying to @lizelle...

IMHO - This is in no way respectable at all

That is so good, Lizelle. I was actually thinking of Hive Thrifted while writing this. I've read it from Eliana and it's how I learned about the community. It will be an honor to write about it. I will check them out and do a post, although I'm not sure if I can do it in our language. I will try hehe. Thank you :)

I'm the one in my house who loves to buy things even if there's no need pf them, but i give away to other at a certain time when i don't want to have these in my room.

But yes my mom always keep the stuff in room even if it's no need
I don't know why we both are so different??

Aww, it's good that you chose to give away the things you don't need. But why do you buy them in the first place when you know you don't need them? 😅 But that was me too, a long time ago, haha!

Maybe your mom loves them so she keeps them in the room :)

I'm in line with this philosophy of less is more, sis.

I have been trying to lighten up my mother's house for the last few months. And I shudder every time I go there to declutter, it is not only what it is in her closet but in the whole house.

Anyway, I am one of those who go more for having experiences than for owning things.

That is so good sis, that your mother allows you to declutter her house. It will take a while but you will get there hehe.

I'm also for creating memories more than collecting things.
