I had an unexpected guest yesterday around mid-morning and she brought me some really tasty banana cake as her pasalubong. Then on the evening, someone who came from the UK brought us chocolates too.

Pasalubong is a local term which means a small gift, especially of food, that you give to friends or relatives when coming from a trip or when visiting them.

I don't know when this culture (if I can call it as such) amongst us Filipinos has started but it has been so, for as long as I can remember. It used to be a beautiful practice and gesture but most times overshadowed by the attitude of others who expect so much to the point that they get disappointed especially when a family member or a friend comes from abroad and do not bring any pasalubong.

There were instances when I hear people say "wala man lang pasalubong" or "he/she didn't even bring any gifts" and oh boy, it irks me so. At one time, I commented rather badly to one to let her understand that it is wrong to expect such from someone just because he/she came from abroad.

When I met fellow Pinoys back when I was working overseas, one of their common predicaments when planning for a vacation is the pasalubong. In as much as they want to give one to every relative or friend, they usually couldn't because they will have to spend months of their salaries to do so. Yet some simply close their eyes and do it which to me is kinda absurd.

Sometimes our love for our families and friends clouds our reasoning that even when we know it is not the best thing to do, we had to do it because we want to please them.

Giving (or receiving) pasalubong is supposed to be joyful but the meaning has somehow changed these days to the point that it can become burdensome or overwhelming especially to those who just wanted to come home.

Personally, I would rather welcome empty-handed guests. For some reason, it feels lighter that way. At times I wish to refuse a gift especially when I know that the one bringing it is struggling. That said, I appreciate the thought of course!

Anyway, it's a beautiful Sunday here in my side of the world. I hope things are well with you too where you are :)

Cheers!

I admire your thoughts of welcoming empty-handed guests because we aren't really the same, I mean, the state of life we have. But if there's a pasalubong, that's more than enough already to be thankful for.

And about that delicious food, it seemed sweet. 💙

Thank you, guess and yes, with or without pasalubong is definitely okay.

The banana bread/cake is soft and tasty.

I hate it every time I heard that line! What annoying more if you gave them yet they are not satisfied. So instead of appreciating, you will heard complains.

Oh banana that is one of my favorite but I could seldom taste a delicious one. Saan may tinda na masarap?

And yes, bihira yung masarap na banana cake/bread. Eto, super soft and tasty saka tama lang yung tamis nya. Gawa dito sa amin😉

Oh made me remember one scene during my vacation last month. I was with my sister who is working at SG, then one time a neighbor went into our house to offer a crabs and some shrimps. Fresh from the sea, mula sa dagat they went straight to our house.
We always glad to buy whatever merchandize our neighbor's offer. Yet not that time.
It was so expensive! P1500, for two pcs of alimango and some shrimps. I know mahal naman talaga but the price is not makatarungan! So we declined. Only to find out that his father instructed him to offer it to us for P800.
Medyo he is mandurugas lng cause the thought bibilhin daw ng ate ko kasi kakauwi lng..marami pera🤣.
What a mindset.

Ang layo naman😅

This is a thoughtful and special practice. I’d never go over to my friends without bringing them something no matter how little, even it’s just just a bar of chocolate or come candies; I enjoy watching them smile when I present my little gifts.
Giving should always be thoughtful, and that also means not going out of your way just to impress anyone.
That banana cake looks yum😋
Save me a slice, love. ❤️

That is so thoughtful of you. And I agree, giving shouldn't be done to impress others.

You have to come over, else I'll eat them all, lol!
Thank you lots, !LADY

Whenever I'm going for visitation, I make sure I go with a gift so that I will be fully welcomed.

Thought we need to embrace empty-handed guests because our status is not the same.
If we have the money then we can go with a gift.

The best is to continue spreading love, thank you for this.
How is your day going??
