Tobacco, Candle + Coconut Oil = Lola

(Edited)

Last week, I went to the store and saw the store keeper segregating tobaccos in retail size packs, folding them neatly and putting them on display. Seeing that scene and the smell of tobacco reminded me of my 'La. And what a coincidence that the third edition of the SilverPrompt currently running is about scents memories!

Alex Vagler

'La (short for Lola) was how we used to call my granny, Mom's mother. She was one of our neighbors in my youth. Our house and hers were literally just about 20 meters apart and I had some fond memories of her and that include the scents I'm to share today.

Tobacco Scents

'La grew a few stems of tobacco in her yard and two near our kitchen windows. She'd pick a few mature leaves of them, dry them out in the sun and stock them up for her later use. She smokes them in a beautiful pipe. She would go sit at the edge of her yard away from everyone else and spend many minutes silently enjoying her pipe. When she sees us getting closer while she's smoking, she'd yell in her not-so-loud voice telling us to go away.

I remember that months after 'La passed away, we still smell the scent of tobacco being burnt as if she was just around smoking her pipe. I think even Mom found it strange so she decided to get rid of the tobacco plants at La's yard and also those near our kitchen windows. The weird occurrences stopped.

Anna Shvets

Burning Candles and Melted Coconut Oil

These are two other scents that easily remind me of my granny. She was a Roman Catholic devotee and one of the church elders during her time. She had a small room in her house which she called "Kapilya" (tiny chapel) with a cute altar covered with white linens and filled with figurines and candles. Even the floor was shiny and clean so everyone must take off shoes or slippers before entering.

Everyday, she'd light candles placed on beautifully-carved candle holders and pray the rosary. When we were still kids, she would call us inside her Kapilya every Sunday at 3 in the afternoon to pray with her. After that, she'd teach us play the string instrument she had or massage each one of us using coconut oil which my siblings, I and my cousins always loved.

Dana Tentis

She always had a bottle of coconut oil which she orders from someone making them at home and the smell was quite pleasing to the nostrils. She'd scoop enough amounts of the hardened coconut oil, rub them repeatedly on her palms until they melt and then apply them all over the body of the one she's massaging. I remember people said 'La had a healing touch and other neighbors often came to her when they get sprained or hurt and she'd attend to them patiently.

It's been over 25 years since 'La was gone but it's always nice to get reminded of her from time to time.

Thank you #SilverPrompt for this opportunity to write about our scents memories :)

Oh, tobacco smell is so evocative. I hate being around smokers, but sometimes that whiff of smokeon the air brings back memories!

That's true, it does bring back some memories :) I don't like smokers too and easily get a bad headache. It was good that granny had manners she didn't want anyone to get the secondhand smoke from her before :)

Sa tatay ko naman sis hindi lang neighbors dahil may mga dumadayo pa talaga para lang magpahilot, at dahil di naman tumatanggap Ng pera tatay ko, gulay binibigay nila o kaya saging na saba😂.

Growing tobacco must have been cool for 'la and cheap too. I know now it is silly expensive in the UK.
Coconut oil is awesome and coconut is one of my favourite smells, all my shampoos and conditioners etc are coconut smelling, so I can see why granny used it to massage you all!
Awesome memories of evocative scents are to you CJ.
Thank you for answering the scents and aromas prompt and have a wonderful Tuesday:)

That must be true Tito Ed, and her tobacco plants were robust too. And speaking of price, I think it is getting pricey here too along with beetle nut and all those stuff they mix because more and more people are chewing them, lol!

coconut is one of my favourite smells, all my shampoos and conditioners etc are coconut smelling,

Oh wow, I now know one of your scents Tito Ed, haha! Coconut scent is amazing indeed :)

Salamuch :) It's been a pleasure answering the prompt. It came right on time and it tickled my fond memories of my granny :)

Oh hello Jackie, I hope you are well now? I didn't know you were sick because I've not been active too. The recent Engagement League was a proof I didn't do well :)

I'm doing okay, thank you :) Enjoy your Tuesday as well.

No worries @ifarmgirl 😊 it is overall quieter here I found.
From last Thursday I caught a bad cold and flu 🤒 🤧🤧 couldn’t do much for days on end. Did test just in case it was covid. Luckily not 🤞🏻🤞🏻 A relieve… as my immune system is weakened anyways, so I don’t want to catch that. But that does mean when I’m sick it just takes longer than other people to recover. I have to rest more I guess…
Still not back to normal, but I just had to join yesterdays power up day and post my growth. So am catching up slowly, bit by bit.

Great to hear you are doing ok. Hope the weather isn’t too bad for you at the moment.
Thank you and enjoy your day further 👋🏻😊

Glad to know you are better although not 100% back to your normal health. Hope you will recover fully sooner. Do take care and rest well as you recuperate. I will pop in to your PUD post in a little while :)

Rainy day today so bedroom time for me, lol!

Thank you so much dear @ifarmgirl 😊🤗 I will, and take many breaks as I do need more rest.
We are moving out of this apartment end of the month, so I need to start packing soon. I need to be up and running soon hehehe 🤭 it’s not our big move, just an extra in between move.
Thanks for that!

Rainy days are no fun, but we sure could use some rain here… but we need to wait a few more months.
Cuddle in with some blankets… always nice.

I can just smell that tobacco, love it but I don't often get to smell the aroma of tobacco from a pipe anymore! I find it really special that your grandma grew her own; it's not often that womenfolk smoked a pipe. Your 'La sounds like a woman after my heart; that coconut oil massages must have been so special! Candles also have a very special smell, not so, especially when you blow it out and that smoky tendril hits your nose!
Your post has really brought those scents alive @ifarmgirl ;)

Thank you lots, Lizelle :)

It's very rare to see one smoking a pipe nowadays. Thinking about it, I've not seen anyone do it at all in many years! And you're right about the smell of candles. It can be suffocating when we blow them out.

The massages were quite memorable and I now wonder if it had something to do with my love (addiction) to getting pampered with massage in my adulthood up until this time, lol!

Seems La was such a sweet woman, no wonder you miss her. The last memories of my Granny were not so good because she was terribly sick and sustained the smell of all the plenty medications she was taking before she went to be with the Lord.

Maybe once they were gone she was ready to move on ♥️
