How to be a top 100 witness: Engagement

avatar

Someone asked me recently how did I manage to get to the top 100 witness and it made me reflect a bit.Hope this post helps newer and smaller witnesses, and maybe even bigger witnesses than me. Right off the bat I think it was engagement that has got me here.

Before we get started, don't forget to drop a vote for me as a witness if you have a vote laying around!

Back to "how to be a top 100 witness":

Of course, you also need a server, but that is what every witness needs. It is implied a server is behind every witness; Although some witnesses do use their personal computers turned on 24/7 to produce blocks. Keep in mind, the lower your rank is the less blocks you are assigned. Only the top 20 witnesses get 1 block per minute!

By the way, it is sad that many top 20 witnesses are not actively engaged with the community. This is very sad because they are the oligarchy that control this blockchain. If they are not engaged and active in the communities they get detached from what are people doing here and what are our expectations as users.

If you are interested in growing as a witness, engage with the communities. Try to add value.

I grew a lot by writing tutorials. I will write more when I have my time and creativity back, but those tutorials were great. There are other types of quality content you can write but tutorials were my speciality.

Whatever it is that you choose to talk about, try to do it well in a way that adds value to the communities where you post. This way the community grows and you grow within the community. It is a very positive and healthy feedback loop!

I am very small, I get 2, maybe 3 blocks a day. But I am willing to share so that the witness sphere gets more competitive. Even if it would mean I go down the rank. I wish I keep growing, but a healthy ecosystem is above all else.

I'm still really new to Hive and have no idea what Witnesses are. There are so many confusing things about the network but I'm slowly learning.

Witnesses are the equivalent of miners, but since it is delegated proof of stake, instead of how powerful the miner is, the more votes they receive determines how much they mine.

Every 3 seconds a block is produced, every 21 blocks is a round. We have the top 20 most voted witnesses and they can produce one block every minute (every round) and the 1 extra witness is "randomly" selected from all the other hundreds of witnesses below the top 20, the more votes you have the more likely you are to be selected for this 1 extra block.

I have personally always been against having those top 20 because it forms an oligarchy. Tron in my opinion is very centralised and they have 27 block producers (their witnesses), we have less than that.

And here is cost of server running and maintenance which is sometimes too much,
!LUV this initiative.

So if I had a server to focus on creating blocks I could be a witness? Or is it having high HP and curating? I'm curious to see how to become a witness, it's still not clear.

The post is more about my path towards the top 100.

But to begin with you need some computer connected to the internet. The blockchain assigns a few blocks to witnesses outside the top 100 so it is not profitable to “mine”, but it interesting.

You then need to do your campaign to get votes. You can grow as a witness having a low Hive Power yourself if you get enough votes, or you can buy Hive Power to grow, which would be quite a big investment.

Ok so then the best way is to grow your account with votes till you get to where you at now
