PETROL TANKER EXPLOSIONS IN NIGERIA: Carelessness of Tanker's Drivers and Bad Roads in Nigeria

Many people have lost their lives to fire incident which is either caused by the bad road system or the carelessness of the tanker drivers while transporting the petrol products from the DEPOT to the different filling stations in the country. Today I bringing to your knowledge the petrol tankers explosion that has happened in Nigeria which has also claimed Many lives and properties and has rendered many people homeless and made some perpetual handicap.

Just as at Friday 22nd April 2022, petrol tanker explodes in Lagos which leads to the killing of many
people and destructions of several building including shops stocked with billions of goods been burnt down as the petrol tanker fell around Ajegunle Bus-Stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Way at about 4am on Friday which later exploded.

Meanwhile,the residents around Ajegunle Bus-Stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway Way rushed to the scene as the petrol tanker fell and they were scooping fuel gushing into the drainage before tanker caught up in the inferno. It has almost became a regular event in Nigeria the explosion of petrol tanker which are most times attributed to bad road and restlessness of Tanker's drivers. Several fire incident has been occurred in Nigeria due to these factors. Between the space of 2019 and 2021, Nigeria have witnessed 68 fire incidents which leads to the death of about 79 people.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) also disclosed that 45,347 pipeline explosions occurs across which three Gas explosions occurred in Lagos State of Nigeria.

  • On early hour Thursday 8th October 2020, Petro tanker got exploded at Baruwa area of Ipaja in Lagos State which leads to the death of eight people and burning of 25 houses and sixteen shops with goods worth billions of Naira

  • Also on Thursday 24th September 2020, just after two intervals, another gas tanker explosion occurred at Ifako-Ijaye area of Lagos state which claimed many lives, while about 50 people sustained burn injuries from the explosion.

  • Then on Tuesday 7th July 2020, another dangerous petrol tanker explosion took place at Gbetiokun, OML 40, which also leads to the Killing seven people during the discharging of Gbetiokun production.

  • Meanwhile, on Sunday 15th April 2020, at about 9am, another terrible explosion at Abule-Ado area around Festac Town, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State, another precious 23 lives were wasted, 25 were injured, 50 houses was totally destroyed while 276,000 people were internally displaced as the explosion lasted for hours.

  • Moreover, on Saturday 28th March 2020, another petrol tanker which confer got exploded along the Akure Owo road after which the tanker developed a fault on the road.

  • Another explosion took place on 29th November 2019, at Ajegunle, Lagos, which claimed lives and dozens of shops.

  • On 11th September 11 2019, another tragedy petrol explosion breaks out at Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, (NNPC) Ibadan Depot as some fuel trucks which was loading bay at the Ibadan Depot got exploded.

On 18th October 18 2019, petrol Tanker fire incident occurred at Enugu expressway area of Bessoy Filling Station Onitsha Anambra State on the early hours of Friday which destroys 3 other caterpillars and over 30 vehicles in different mechanic, electrical, and spraying workshops worth billions of Naira inside Omagba Phase II area of Onitsha.

On 11th November 2019, a Tanker driver while transporting the petrol products ran after another tanker and got exploded at the early hours of Monday at Ayobo, Abesan Estate, Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

This has been the terrible experience in different parts of Nigeria and has brings setback, frustration to people especially the victims and the environs which requires carefulness on the part of tanker drivers and a deliberate act on the part of Nigerian Government to build roads.
