News from Africa Today: ‘Slavery, rape, torture’: Libya threatened by foreign fighters

It's very pertinent to note that war zones in Africa is usually classified by series of abuses by both local and foreign military personnel who are on duty in the conflicted area.

The horn of Africa (comprising, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somali as well as Libya) and some part of North Africa are classified as axis of evil or conflict spots in the African continent.

In course of civil wars and other inter-states wars, either continental or region military joint operations are carried out to restore peace in the warring region, but the reverse is usually the case. This is because those military personnel sent to restore peace, are usually engaged in human right violation of local citizens.

Human right abuses such as rape, torture and slavery is usually the order of the day. Military personnel are usually in the act of raping the vulnerable women and torture most innocent locals that are in that region.

Libya faces a serious security threat from foreign fighters and private military companies, especially Russia’s Wagner Group which has violated international law.Source

These human right violations is more often done by the peacekeepers from other parts of Africa. Currently, the Libyan government have cried out for help and said that Libya is threatened by the presence of foreign fighters currently in peacekeeping mission in Libya.

In a United Nations report obtained by The Associated Press news agency, experts also accused seven Libyan armed groups of systematically using unlawful detention to punish perceived opponents, ignoring international and domestic civil rights laws including ones prohibiting torture.Source

Violation of humanitarian laws both domestic and International amounts to crime against humanity, which is an abberation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights enacted in 1948. Using torture for any reason to retrieve information from locals is a crime against humanity and should be investigated properly, while violators should be brought to book in due course.

The United Nations investigation team in Libya said that the most vulnerable people in Libya are the migrants, who are usually subjected to slavery, rape and torture. Most of these migrants are from Sub-saharan African who are trying to travel Spain through the North African country.

It should be noted that these incidents have been taking place since NATO airstrikes that killed the Libyan leader Gaddafi in 2011. Since then, there have been several military operations in Libya that have shown serious human right abuses most especially from foreign fighters.

Libya is seen as a dumping ground for several rebel groups most especially those from Chad and Sudan. The UN investigation panel in Libya have also indicated that the Turkish backed Syrian fighters have been seen in rebel camps in Tripoli.

I'll conclude by saying that the United Nations should do all it can to end human right abuses in Libya from two ends: limit military operations by limiting force troopers currently in operation in Libya and by settling the disputes through elections and installing a democratic government in Libya.
