Can we precisely define the term "Whale" on the POB Platform ?

(Edited)

Really there is no precise definition of the whale on the #hive. Traditionally, in the crypto world whales are the investors who hold enough cryptocurrency and have the potential to influence the crypto currency valuations. On the same lines, whales on Hive are those who influence the visibility and payout of the content.

Whales are important for content based social media. They have significant influence on the content. Though there is no given definition of what is whales, they are the most important eco-system of social media platforms.
We all know that @proofofbrainio is the only account with the significant value but there are some more accounts which can now be termed as the whale accounts.

RICHLIST (3).png

POBwhales

I would define a whale as someone with enough #POB in their wallet to give you a vote equivalent to atleast 20 POB or more when they up-vote your post.

At the current prevailing market prices, it also means that you should have more than 8000 or more POB power in your wallet to be a whale.

During the compilation of the richlists i figured out that there are ten accounts which can be termed as #POB Whales. You can read my posts on richlists

Here is the list of whales whose vote can win you 20 POB at the 100% vote value.

Account NamePOB PowerApproximate vote value*
@proofofbrainio67814.688159.3645168
@trostparadox31900.22274.9655217

@vempromundo.pob13263.0949531.16827312
@amr008.pob12161.2411428.57891668
@calumam11618.54327.30357605
@madstacks9923.37423.3199289
@lucylin8305.42919.51775815

These all accounts have more than 220 thousand POBpower, which is close to 50% of the total circulation of the POB and technically they are the whales who influence the content the most.
The vote values are likely to change daily. I have done these calculations on the data of 2nd may.

POB Dolphins

Dolphins have the significant influence on posts in any social media as these are influencers accounts with significant voting power, though not as big as whales.
Their votes have a big effect on which posts/comments get attention and which posts make the most money. I would define the dolphin as some one who gives a vote above 10 tokens at 100% vote value.

When converted to the current prevailing market prices, it also means they have #pobpower above 4000.

Account NamePOB PowerApproximate vote value*
@faireye7823.28418.46295024
@pob-fund6880.36416.23765904
@brofi6121.42721514.44656823
@oldmans5395.03812.73228968
@phusionphil4803.56711.33641812
@scooter77.pob4480.19102310.57325081

These are the dolphin accounts. There are many other dolphins in making and the list would be big hence not writing it down here but any one with vote value above 5 POB token is a dolphin in making.

So any new comer looking to get a good visibility on POB platform should try and get big votes from one of these 16 accounts mentioned above.

Do you missed out to be a dolphin on this platform. I guess it was just marginal shortfall for you to be a pob whale. Your pob power was close to 3900 and you needed 4000 to be the dolphin

It is a really nice compilation of the richie riches of the POB world. I am sure one 100% vote from any of these abovementioned names would change the kind of money you make on this platform. I have been always reading your analytical studies on the super riches on POB platform. I would also want to see myself in this league some day.

Really there is no precise definition of the whale on the #hive.

This statement is totally wrong
Hive whale is the one who holds at least 1000 MVests. It was described in taskmasters's post half a year ago, here
As of today, on HIVE whale's minimum is 519888 Hive. Other levels:

With the same proportions, on POB the equivalent level today would be 597 POB's , or the same 0.1312% from the total POB circulating supply
With the current inflation, it will double (to 1200 POB) in the next two month, and triple in four month (1760 POB's)
One year from now, POB whale will need to own 4045 POB tokens, and minimum ~8000 by May 1, 2023
It just shows HOW EARLY we all are in the POB space.

Wow this has made the definition so simple. @onealfa.leo you really made everyone mentioned in these lists as the super-whales. This is now becoming really exciting. Anybody with just 597 POB is whale today, but what is more interesting is how many of them really hold back as the whale after a year when lot of investors would have been added and some may have slowed in the process of acquiring the same stakes as they have today.

Great perspective to notice for those following along. I think this highlights even further how important distribution is in the early stages and how developing a strong "middle-class" for POB will keep the user experience fulfilling as time progresses.

By these numbers, all that are above 597POB are whales ... But who will continue to raise their value to follow this arduous path

This explains it all, this is a great way to break it down. Definitely I’m a whale presently, that’s nice.

Thank you for highlighting this. I probably had a different calculation. I considered 8000 POB power for the current period (instead of May 2023) thinking that 597 is a too small amount for someone to be called as a whale. However, technically you are right. If we go by the value of 597 POB power then we already have more than 84 whales on this platform.

I think that before worrying if one of these whales give you an Upvote or not, the main focus should be on creating quality content, if you do that it is very sure that the success and the Upvote of any of them will reach your account, and If you do this with discipline and determination, taking into account the content more than if they vote for you, the path will be easier because you will not be in constant uncertainty whether or not you received an Upvote from them, if you look at each one they have great standards and criteria for choosing a publication, mostly the quality of the content has an advantage ... so you can bring your attention to that point and your stay in the community will be more pleasant!

If you'd like a definition of the different levels, you can find out more from this post by Holger:

https://hive.blog/tribe/@holger80/what-is-the-amount-of-staked-tokens-to-became-a-minnow-dolphin-orca-or-whale-for-a-scot-tribe-2019-08-07

It's from 2 years ago and interesting to see how low the requirements were to be a whale in some of the tribes when they were initially set up... ~5,000 to be a whale on Leo.

This is a good understanding of the term whale. I am happy that you highlighted this. I guess POB is in its infancy and we are some of the early adopters of this platform. @onealfa.leo just mentioned in his comments that it requires only 597 POB to be called as the whale at the current inflation rate. Considering that we have 84 accounts above that level. So this platform is going to create more and more whales as well.

I can see that there are many attempts made in the past to define the whale on Hive platforms. I am seeing that this definition you have provided here in your post is completely new and simple to understand.
I would be honest, I read both the definitions given here in the comments section, but it was difficult for me to understand where to get these Mvests and why the definition was complicated.
I mean it could have been as simple as some one with 100 hive should be called a minnow or 100 thousand hive should be called whale.
In your post the definition is quite clear. Anyone with exact POB power and the vote value above a threshold is whale. Both these parameters can be seen in the wallets.

Yes it is quite complicated to work on the MVests. That was the reason why i felt that i would come out with something which is easily understandable and not too complicated. Considering that at today's inflation rate we just need 597 POB power to be called as the whale. Your name is also in the list of those having POB power above 597 pobs staked.

With more than 51 % power I think POB will be better at creating regulation at controlling voting and downvoting. POB and LEO will be two powerful side chains that attract new hive users.

Creating good high quality contents will get the attention of the whales and they will upvote the content...that is why the major focus of the author is to create good contents....@interpretation
