1982 was the 250 year anniversary of George Washington's birth. To commemorate the event, the US mint created a unique half-dollar, made in 90% silver and with a proof finish.

It's 0.3617 fine oz silver, encapsulated in air-tight plastic.

The reverse shows George's home, with the US seal at the bottom, a miniature version of the seal on a normal half-dollar.

It's an handsome coin and the proof finish really makes this coin shine.

This coin is unique because it is the first commemorative coin minted since the 1954 Booker T. Washington commemorative which was not very successful. This coin at the time was also not very successful, collectors would only purchase it slightly above it's silver content value.

Only 7.1 million of the 10 million minted were sold, the remaining 2.9 million coins were melted down and repurposed. Melting almost THREE MILLION of these coins must have been a BIG JOB!
