We Are Alive! November 2nd, 2022 Deer Apples

Today we visited the apple orchard for some apples. Most years (we skipped last year) we purchase a few bushels of apples and make and can a whole bunch of apple sauce.

We used to get store bought apples, but they often run between $1 - $2 a pound. But then we learned a valuable trick.

Deer Apples

Deer apples, or "service" apples are apples that are not picked from the trees, but from the ground. They cannot be sold for human consumption, but are considered fit for animals. This is why they call them "deer apples".

But depending on their condition, they are often of equal quality as the regular "seconds" apples! We just check for bruises, worms or any other issues.

This batch of "deer apples" are in pristine condition!

For apple sauce, we cut them into pieces and cook them at high temperature, so any issues with consumption are not a problem. They are perfect for apple sauce making, and they are certainly fit for our family's consumption in the form of canned apple sauce.

Even through the bag, we can see they are in perfect shape: no bruises, no signs of insect or worm damage... they're perfect! Give them a good wash and they're good!

Perfect for my dear family.

Each bag is a half-bushel, about 20 lbs each so we brought home 100 lbs of apples, paying about $32 total. That's $0.32 per pound. We don't know what kind of apple they are, but they are obviously red and look very yummy. I call these "red yummy" apples!

Now the next project will be making apple sauce!
