Cortisol a stress hormone | I see it as a life saving hormone.

Hello everyone.

Life itself is filled with struggle and as a result of that our body reacts to it when stressed carrying out different functions, keeping the body in it normal state. If there was another option, I know many of us would not want to face situations that will lead to stress.

This is what life offers and we have to accept it with good faith knowing that in life there is a period where and individual would not experience pain and there is also a period of pain. One has to live with this, prepared to face any whenever it comes.

Sharing with us is a brief information I learned and was able to put it into terms I could easily comprehend. I felt it is necessary to share with this wonderful platform the little information I gathered regarding stress, basically the hormone that regulate stress. My years in tertiary institution has been a phase in my life where I have experienced different things.

Among the experience, one of it is stress from Nigerian University

Most of us may have experienced this but of a truth that of my country is something else, specifically in Public Universities. Most times I term it to be survival of the fittest. At this point, this it what life offers to those who can't afford all this top Private Universities or travel abroad for studies. In this case adaptation comes in, we have to adapt to our current situation with focus on reaching the set goal.
In spite of the ASUU strike that has kept us at home for about five months exposing us to different struggles and hustle.

To concentrate on the main cause of this writing, I am going to start with a question.

How does cortisol battle stress?

Cortisol being a stress hormone because of its action on the body by protecting the body against several or numerous injurious effect that is influenced by stress.
With this it is said that during stress conditions there is increased secretion of ACTH(adrenocorticotropic hormone) from the anterior pituitary thereby causing increase in the secretion of cortisol from the adrenal cortex.

In relation to the different kinds of stress that has been seen which are surgery, infection, trauma of almost any type (not emotional trauma ohh😂), intense cold or heat and any disease that causes loss of strength or energy i.e debilitating disease.

With respect to trauma.

Traumas are serious injuries due to accident or anything else that can cause injury. What cortisol has to do here is to induce healing by acting on several inflammatory substances (pro-inflammatory) such as leucotriene, thromboxanes and prostaglandings not to be secreted by the enzyme phospholipase A2. These proinflammatory substances when secreted it causes inflammation and with inflammation not maintained within narrow limits, it effects will be injurious.

With respect to Surgery.

This is where it has to do with the immunosuppressive effect of cortisol. If sensitive organs like the heart and kidney are being transplanted and antigens (cells that don't allow the entry of foreign substances) react to it. It will cause this transplanted organs not to function, with this cortisol has to limit the effect of antigens stimulation.

With respect to intense cold and Heat.

It is clear that when the temperature is too low or too high, it has injurious effect on the body, because of the injurious effect, cortisol is secreted to stop the stress effect on the body.

With respect to infection and debilitating disease.

Cortisol is also secreted to curb the effect of stress on the body.

In conclusion.

It is important to note that there is a hormone responsible for regulating most of the stressed conditions we find ourselves and the hormone is cortisol.
