When we are doing activities that solid a day like school and work. Of course the hours of rest to be the thing we wait for. Lunch break awaited because we can take the time to keep the body from fatigue and stress, and hope to do the activity afterwards.

In Indonesia, usually hours of rest we did three activities in general. The first Prayer of zuhr, for muslims, the second perform activities of lunch and the third if the break time is rather long's workers will nap for a moment.

Lunch in Indonesia have a lot of menu and manner of presentation. There was made a provision by the family in the house (wife or parents), eat in the cafeteria or a restaurant, and order food to be wrapped and eating location of work. One of the lunch menu which be a favorite of the workers in Indonesia is Nasi Padang.


History of Nasi Padang

Nasi Padang is one of the types of food that exist in Indonesia, originating from West Sumatra and is famous for its rich flavor, delicious and the prices varied and had a distinctive managed directly by the people of minangkabau. Nasi padang is a portion of rice with gravy curry and a variety of side minang traditional food such as rendang,fried chicken, jerky, grilled fish etc.

When I lived in the city of Padang for 4.5 years, I got the explanation from my professor about why it is called nasi padang. Its history, the restaurant is typical minang first established in Padang city, in the 1930s in the dean of the market tower and instantly become the favorite food of the rich there. With the current conditions where the nasi padang can be consumed by all people.

In Indonesia you can get a Padang restaurant from start to end of Aceh to Papua. It is associated with the tradition of the “Merantau” by the people of Minangkabau. Merantau had the sense to go to an area to look for life and a better income from the place of origin. In addition, the distribution of Padang Restaurant so that could be anywhere in Indonesia is also a result of a tragedy PRRI (Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia) in the years 1955-1958 where there was the efforts of several provinces in the Island of Sumatra to remove themselves from the Republic of Indonesia and the shape of the country itself. The revolution then failed and many of the minangkabau people decide to go from west sumatra because of the fear is considered part of the rebels.


Mystery of Nasi Padang

There is a mystery about nasi padang finally I can know the truth after I lived in the City of Padang. As a teenager I always wonder if eating at a Padang Restaurant, why are the portion of food at the restaurant is not as much as if we message to be wrapped. There are two history info I earn. First, because the first only the rich and the Dutch nation could eat in the restaurant so the indigenous people of Indonesia should only be bought nasi padang to take home. Because of the condition it is then the restaurant while it is preferred portion of rice to take home.

But there is one opinion of the lecturer I say culture, first person to order a nasi padang to wrap are usually workers who expend a lot of energy in the work so that the rice will be expected to make their energy back. There is also a saying nasi padang which brought home to have a portion that is more because the restaurant does not need to wash the dishes dirty. I still don't think of a reason that is important when I get a serving of nasi padang enough to fill my stomach.

Padang food is usually wrapped in banana leaves. It is believed to make the rice is fragrant and improve nasi padang. I ordered nasi padang with fried chicken, this is one of the favorites menu when we eat nasi padang. Fried chicken a typical minang different with fried chicken restaurant in america. Chicken undergone a process of pengungkepan so that the spices to infuse and flavour of the meat is very rich in flavor.

One of the trademark nasi padang is a gravy curry. It makes the rice so lightly browned and don't forget the sauce and variety of vegetable stew. A bite of the rice field can make we go for a bite to two, to three and not feel one pack of rice has been exhausted. Nasi Padang is also known in various regions of Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei.
