Road to CHAMPION League #1: Introduction and Giveaway πŸ˜€

Hello everyone!

Very excited to do my first blog post about Splinterlands.
In this blog I'm charting my journey to CHAMPION 1 League. 500K Power feels like miles away; this might crash and burn but I will share everything along the way.

I'm doing a giveaway for every post. It will start small and humble and get bigger if I make good progress πŸ™Œ

Introduction

This is my first NFT game. One thing that draws me to SL is trying to dissect how they are building the economy and future. They seem to be doing a great job so maybe it will help me with my day job! I work in the gaming industry and I've been a high level player in many different games: several TCG's, some MMOs, and mobile gacha games.

I'm a hardcore min-maxer and study a lot. This usually leads to quick mastery but so far this hasn't worked out for SL. My thinking is there is so much money involved in the big NFT games that it's hard to break in. Also NFT games have a high barrier to entry so I suspect the pool of sellers are mostly all sharp. And waiting for fish like me to come in.

Quick Thoughts about Splinterland New Player Experience

Most gacha games are very generous with currency at the start to hook you. And your power level grows quickly at the start while you're onboarded. NFT games can't do that and it leads to a brutal experience.

I do think this is a real problem for the industry. New players are getting absolutely smashed and earning peanuts. Why would they continue? I've read about other NFT games and they all share the same problems of multi-accounts, bots, and higher level players smurfing at the lower levels. All of this is tied to "play to earn."

I don't have a set budget but I know I will be spending on this game as an investment. "Play to earn" games are pretty snowbally in terms of rewards. The rewards at higher leagues seem super juicy! In most games where you can spend for power it's better to frontload the spending to speed up progression and then collect the residuals.

The Journey Begins

I'm starting my blog as a newbie pretty much. None of my opinions are fixed and I appreciate any advice. I had a few beliefs to start this but they've already been shaken.

  • I want to own cards, not rent. I thought that since I believe in SL's future, owning makes more sense. Unfortunately the timing is really bad to buy vs rent because of the new set coming out. I think the new packs will flood the market with good cards and:
  1. New cards will shift the meta. So almost every card right now will change in price as they get stronger/weaker.
  2. Flood of supply will just lower the price of all cards
  • Play the long game. I'm thinking a lot of the money in NFT games comes from correctly speculating on the right assets. Right now is that Land Plots? Alpha Packs? Very rare cards? I have no idea. But I mostly want to invest in stuff that I think has a future, assuming that the game flourishes.

Referral Program + Giveaway

I've spent about $2K so far, mostly in bad(?) investments. Will follow up on that in my second post πŸ€‘ This blog is getting a bit long so I'll stop here. I just won my first reward cards today. A Heatsmith and a Bandit. I will give these out to two random people who like this post.

Join Splinterlands through my link and let's work together! Happy to share cards and strategies.

Good luck in your endeavor. I am looking forward to seeing how it works out for you going forward. I am currenly playing a "spellbook only" alt where I will not be bringing money into the account beyond the original 10 dollars for the spellbook. Which seems to be completely opposite of what you are doing, and makes your experience especially interesting to me.

Best of luck. I was winning about 30-40% of my games without any cards. It seems pretty tough right now but looking forward to seeing how you build it up.

Hi, i hope you have a great time playing splinterlands and achieve your goals!
and that your investments will be profitable.

The rewards you'll get in higher leagues do seem juicy, but you have to remember that the people in higher leagues do hold onto a higher value aswell. So in the end their ROI on playing might be the same or similar to playing in lower leagues, i think.

at the moment it is indeed quite hard for new players to get in without renting a deck, which is why chaos legion's release is being so highly anticipated!

As for speculating on the right assets, all splinterlands assets are pretty popular at the moment 😁
Don't put all your eggs in one basket though.

Good luck, and have fun!

Champion League!! God I can barely get into Silver League. That's with card rentals. And now that I'm there, I'm afraid to battle. When it comes to buying cards, I'm also on the fence as the new packs might sway the way the current cards will be used. It's hard to invest now when the card may be unusable with the release of the new packs.

Anyhow, I'm intrigued by this post and will follow your progress. We should keep in touch and trade ideas.

Btw, thanks again for the advice about PeakMonsters having the comparison per USD.

A few thoughts.

First: Congratulations on joining the game and yes play to earn games have their flaws for sure. I think there are some ways to help new players but I'll save that for my blog :)

Second: Champion is a huge dollar hurdle to get there. Even with the long game its virtually unattainable without very deep pockets or renting. A subject for another one of my blogs coming up :)

Third: I have battled as high as Diamond and regularly hit Gold I rank with my cards but in the end I settle in at Silver I. There are diminishing rewards as you climb in league. There is an increased time commitment to try and continually battle increasingly sophisticated opponents with very deep pockets.

but Fourth: There is a different meta in every level of the game. Certain cards are better in different ranks. Example: Elven Mystic is a go to card for me in Silver (silence) but useless in bronze. Tortosian Chief made a huge different in Gold I(healing) but rarely got used in lower levels.

The different card powers in different levels makes it hard. If you aim for Champion level cards you'll have a rough time in Bronze and Silver. Focus on Bronze and Silver and you'll have the wrong cards for Gold and higher.

Good luck :)

Don't mean to discourage you but wanted to give a couple points to consider.

Hello, @jaelove! This is @anggreklestari from @OCD team. We saw that you already posted your first post here in Hive Blockchain! Congratulations and welcome! However, it would be awesome if you do an introduction post. As a sample of what an intro post is, you can refer to this intro post for reference:

Keeping Up With the Buzz - My Introduction to the Hive Community

There's no specific format on how you do your intro post, but there is some suggested content that we would love to see in your post. Information like who are you and where you're from, how did you discover Hive or who invited you, what types of content you want to see here and the types that you want to produce, and what are your expectations in this platform. There's no pressure on this. You can choose whatever information you would like to share.

You can tag me @anggreklestari on your intro post then if you have done with it.

Well, you can explore the communities that are suitable for your content. You can read some of the communities in this post: OCD Communities Incubation Program

For tips and information as a Hive newbie, click here: newbie guide.

The important thing is Hive is a bit different from other social media platforms since you are monetizing your blog. You can't include content that you don't own without sources. For more information, check this post: Why and How People Abuse and Plagiarise.

If you have questions, you can hop into OCD's Discord server and we'll gladly answer your questions. For now, @lovesniper will follow you and we are looking forward to your intro post!

Thank you :) I looked through the intro posts on HIVE and the recommendations. After careful consideration I wanted to use this as my intro post. Focus more on the gameplay, motivations for playing Splinterlands, and sharing with the community rather than details about myself. Hope you understand.
