Technology and education: weapons to attack Populism.

avatar
If we take a look at Latin America, we can see that in most of the countries whose governments are democratic, rulers have come to power whose triumph has been based on populism.

This is a consequence of the bad administrations that have caused the impoverishment and ruin of their populations.
This is how these politicians take advantage of these large groups of needy and mostly undereducated citizens, to convince them of their ideology and gain their unconditional loyalty, behind the offer to solve all their economic problems and on the basis that their governments will be to help the poor and stop social injustices.

Populism. Definition and general characteristics

Populism can be considered as an illusion proposed by people who pursue power and through manipulation and deception, play on people's needs, offering them magical solutions to all their problems, usually in the hope that they will achieve their dreams thanks to them.
Populism, used to obtain power and dominance in a country, is used when the population feels defrauded, helpless, desperate, insecure, and dissatisfied; it is then when populism attacks with arguments oriented towards promises, solutions, and commitments that are impossible to fulfill but which make them firmly believe that they will be fulfilled.

Other characteristics of populism are the domination of people's thoughts, manipulating them in such a way that they achieve indoctrination to their approach and political tendency, leaving out all reason and logic in decision making, encouraging rejection and hatred towards the wealthy social classes, control of public powers, constitutional reforms, absolute domination of the media and information, among others.

Why does populism fit in?

The answer is simple: a population tired of unfulfilled promises, with needs to cover and misery, is very easily manipulated by populism.

Generally, populism has a greater number of followers in the lower social classes, whose cultural and educational level is very low because they are much easier to manipulate and deceive and to gain their loyalty in exchange for very little.
Additionally, populism focuses on those people who are in search of wealth easily and with little or no sacrifice.

How to attack it? Education and Technology

Among the most viable proposals are technology and the education of the people.

These two weapons are fundamental to attack populism, an educated, knowledgeable, and informed population is a very difficult wall for populism to break down.
Through the different technological tools, the population can reach information quickly and easily, as well as disseminate it in real-time.
Populist governments always attack the highly educated population, coercing them into decent and well-paid jobs, under the premise of social and economic equality for all.
To this end, they eliminate any possibility of meritocracy in order to demoralize the population that reaches professional levels of education.

In conclusion, with an educated population and access to technological tools, no country would be easy prey for populism.

A really enjoyable article, and also educational! In fact, I believe teaching about what populism is, you will actually help many people understand what it is, and also make them recognize populist patterns in their own country or surrounding countries! I really enjoyed reading this!

Hello dear @ janettyanez, populism has always existed in all countries and at the rate we are going I see it difficult to disappear in the short or medium term, very certainly politicians take advantage of the lower strata because that is where their speeches are heard, that is, that is where people hear the promises that never fulfill because when these politicians come to power they forget about those problems, and I share with you that the only way to counteract this is with Education, because an educated citizen can not be deceived.

Excellent article, success.

This is why Biden supporters hand out tee shirts to caravans coming to America. They hope to "buy" their votes and basically brainwash them into supporting them in whatever endeavors they try to foist on the American people. Unfortunately for the Democrats, many of these people are coming from countries where they see the effects of populism and how it crushes economies while the elite stay in power. A large and growing segment of the Latino community is beginning to see through this for what it is: a corrupt power grab. Education is vital to combatting this but....there also needs to be an effort to combat the people setting the agenda for the education our children are getting.

That is probably where the most insidious danger lies.

Hello dear @janettyanez, meritocracy, education and access to technology to stay informed are fundamental elements to boost the productive work of a country.
The preparation of people for productive work, opportunities for decent work, their fair remuneration and having access to quality public services contribute to social welfare.
I totally agree with you, education is a difficult wall for populism to break down, and if you accompany it with values and ethical principles, even more so.
Congratulations, excellent topic, very relevant today.
Success and joys dear @janettyanez
Greetings
