The Society of the Spectacle

I'm officially writing a book. And I will share my journey, as well as a little insight into the actual content. As Hive Blog Post Month (aka HiveBloPoMo) has just started, I'll be using April 2022, to create the first base of the book. Consider the daily posts on Hive during this month as a little insight. Post written this month might make it into the book, or not. For now, these are just my initial thoughts.

Day 1 - The Society of the Spectacle

In 2009, Simon Sinek took the stage at a TEDx event in Puget Sound. In his talk 'How Great Leaders Inspire Action' he talks about how great leaders and companies don't tell you what they do or how they do it, but why they do it. With over 58 Million views, it ranks as one of the top 5 most watched videos on the TED website. On YouTube, the video has over 15 million views on the official TED YouTube channel, and close to 9 millions views on the TEDx Talks channel. In my marketing lectures, it has become the go to video for explaining the fundamental difference between companies that market the details of their products and services, and companies that focus on the customer experience when using the products and services.

While I do want to talk about the actual content of what he spoke about, I first want to dive into how this message has spread. With the power of the internet, every person in the world gets the opportunity to share their life with the world. Whether it is a joyous reaction of witnessing a double rainbow, a teenager commenting on a friend's sneakers or a group of people throwing a couple of Mentos into bottles of Diet Coke. The same goes for information and ideas. However, it is good to know that the Internet is only the enabler.

Over the past years, I've often been approached by the local media to talk about the impact of Social Media on society. Parents that are worried that their children might see the horrifying things that they see on their Facebook newsfeed. I usually wave it off joking that they should worry less about what their teenage children do on Facebook and should worry more about their anonymous Twitter account and what happens on their Snapchat DM's. Many social media users often forget that their timeline gets filled with content based on their connections, their interest and the content they engage with. Additionally, often also not understanding that what they see might not be the same as someone else.

With the internet, and more specifically social media as an enabler, you have the opportunity to use it in a positive or in a destructive manner. The platforms will enable you to do both. You decide your own faith. Social Media doesn't make you a bad person, it exposes your bad traits and flaws. In ' The Society of the Spectacle' , Guy Debord depicts a world in which we have become spectators drugged by spectacular images. According to Debord, technological developments what many see as innovations of mankind, have led to dissolve of quality and authenticity of human life. What someone represents has become the human norm. Images and representation, slowly supplanting human interaction. Keep in mind that Debord wrote his manifest in 1967, 4 years before Ray Tomlinson send out the first email. And over 25 years before the world wide web was made available to the world. The world didn't become a spectacle because of the internet. The internet has only further enabled people to choose mere representation over genuine interaction, resulting into a bigger spectacle than maybe even Debord would have imagined.

Luckily, as the internet is an enabler, it also enables you to do good. This is where your 'why' becomes important again. Your 'why' is your bridge to authentic interactions. Or you just use it as a marketing ploy to make people feel that you relate. The choice is up to you.

The social media being an enabler is so real. Imagine the son of a former dictator running for president in our country and lots of folks falling for their lies and disinformation that has been flooding the social media for at least six years now. The struggle is real. The concept of your book is really good. Keep it up! We'd love to read more about it.

Have a great week ahead.

Hivebits blends Hive's blockchain and Bitcoin's ethos. Your effort = your reward. Mine HBIT simply 1-per-day with (no space): ! hivebits or ! HBIT or ! hbit or $ hbit.
Success! You mined .9 HBIT and the user you replied to received .1 HBIT on your behalf. You can receive 100% of the HBIT by replying to one of your own posts or comments. Or, support Hivebits at the official HBIT mine | your wallet | market | tools | connect | <><

This confirmation reply will go off when Resource Credits (RCs) get low. Yet, your hivebits command will still go through and you'll get your HBIT. :)
