It's Been Three Days Since I moved Into My Accommodation In Benin

My articles have been centered around Benin lately and this is due to my recent move from South Africa to Benin. Since my move, I tend to have something to write about my life in Benin. For me, this also serves as a diary of my progress as I settle into my new home.

I shared my experience about Rental Accommodation in Benin recently. Today I am sharing with us that I have found accommodation for myself.

In the previous accommodation post, I mentioned viewing three rental accommodations which I didn't like. I eventually found one that I like but it was nothing short of drama.

The Rental Accommodation I Like

The moment I and my cousin's wife saw the accommodation, I like it and she asked if I am sure I was affirmative. It is eight minute walk from their place and about 15 minutes walk from the beach.

A lounge, bedroom with kitchen and toilet, and fairly spacious. I had money on me and I paid a month's deposit immediately to have it secured for me pending final payment later that night since my cousin arrives late from work. He has to see the place for his approval as well since we are all working on what is suitable for me.

The Drama

I have another cousin that has been of help as well so we all went to see the place at night when they got back from work.

My other cousin has a problem with the electricity billing, instead of me buying the units by myself, the meter is installed right in front of my door and each month I have to take down the number of units and then subtract at month end to get the amount I used for payment.

He had a problem with this that I might be cheated and he requested we take the deposit which I paid earlier. Seeing these guys knows the place better than me, I do as they say.

A second thought my host-cousin and his wife saw the electricity issue isn't a big deal, so he asked me if we can go back there and pay for the accommodation. It was now an uncomfortable situation.

We went to view another accommodation the following day and the same story I did not like it, so I had to insist we go back to the one of the previous day.

The caretaker was kind enough to accept us, she said it was based on the politeness of my cousin's wife the previous day otherwise she wouldn't be accepting money from us to rent the place.

Luck Played Out

As we sat making a final agreement, some other couples came to pay for the place so I was just minutes earlier and lucky to get the place.

I paid for three months deposit and for March's rental. I moved into my place on the 8th of March and so far I have been loving it. A quiet place, clean, and just a stone-throw away from my cousin and nearby shops for groceries, also within walking distance from the beach.

That was a hassle, when more people are involved.
Every country can be so different in billing for utilities.
Good you got it sorted out and the lady did accept you in the end. And like you said just in time.
It sounds also like a nice location, close to you cousin and his wife and the beach 🌊

It was a hassle, Jackie, a hassle I wasn't keen on dragging much longer, I was lucky that it was still available and the caretaker lady was open to accepting me to stay after paying the previous day and asking for my money back hours later.

I am so far liking the place. My new home😃

Yes, I can imagine… I would have felt not comfortable too.
But she took you in. Must have felt good for her even though with the happening.

Amen to that Jackie, next week I will be hosting my sisters and nieces from Nigeria 😃 I had to tell them to wait until I am in my accommodation.

Yes, the first visitors hahaha they never can wait. We had our first visitors too very early, we hadn’t even unpacked yet or were organised hahaha 🤣 !LOL

They will be my first visitors, I remember your in-laws were your first visitors.
Well, I don't have anything to unpack lol, they are coming to cook for me and spoil me.
Though there will be an emotional moment to it when they take me to where my mom was laid to rest. I have been waiting 8 years for that now the time has come to go pay my last respect to her. I wouldn't ask for a better mom.

Great am most likely not going to miss it, will be on the lookout for it, Scotland looks beautiful from what you have shared with us so far.

It sure is. We need friends around us. Even the introvert ones hahaha like me.
Our friends come probably Friday or Saturday. Depends how much they drive in a day. They are doing the NC 500 before they come to us. A spectacular driving route up here in the highlands.

It stays all year hot Jackie we are supposed to be in the rainy season now I want to experience that and see if it cools down the temperature a bit. I am going to invest in air conditioning when I start working.

It sounds like there is no perfect place but it's a reasonable place. I am glad you got the place and I hope there aren't any issues with the electricity billing.

Truly no perfect place lol, but am quite happy with the one I got. I hope not as well, will see how much electricity and water I use come month end.

Am happy to read about your new accommodation and am glad its close to your cousin and the beach too. You are blessed to have your cousins around, it's really difficult settling in a place without knowing anyone and having to learn the hard way. I so appreciate them a lot, when I got to SA in 2008, I knew no one and was stranded at the airport for long hours, the person that was supposed to fetch me was reachable when I called, so comparing that to my cousins, am grateful to them.
