The Joy Of Festivus

If you are a Seinfeld fan, you probably heard of Festivus. If you haven't it basically was a holiday that Frank Costanza made up, being disillusioned by the spirit of Christmas. It had a metal pole, airing of grievances and feats of strength.

You don't have to be a Seinfeld fan or heard of Festivus to grasp to benefit from this article. I just mentioned it because it was a man-made holiday (hey aren't they all?)

I was having a group at the Psychiatric Hospital and one of the patients suggested that we create our own holiday and do something special once a year, even once a month, or once a week.

This sounded like a great idea. What do we love about the holidays? We spend time with our friends and family. We have special meals. We give out gifts. Why do we have to wait until Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Valentine's Day?

What is your Holiday going to look like? Who will you celebrate it with? Are you going to have gifts? Are you going to have special food? Do you take off from work? Do you have a pilgrimage you need to take?

Hallmark doesn't need to determine when we create new and lasting memories with our family. We can do it now.

My new holiday may not be a Festivus For The Rest Of Us but it will be something I know I will enjoy. I can't think of what I want it to be right now but I will follow up and let you know what I come up with.
