Powerful Engagement Strategies That Anyone Can Master

Engagement!

A topic that seems to pop up quite a bit here...

Some say it's business as usual, others say engagement sucks on the blockchain.

I'm going to try to highlight some of the strategies that have worked for me, not only on the blockchain...But from over 20 years of building businesses online!

First, let's be brutally honest...If your content is sub-par you aren't going to attract much engagement. And while I don't think anyone should feel like they need to be a Pulitzer Prize winning author from the get-go, we should always try to improve our craft. Always be improving!

What do you think is the number one reason most people either give up posting on the blockchain or stop engaging altogether?

I was poking around my journals this evening and found a little graphic that I think answers this question....

IMG_1172 2.jpg

There's a few things we can never control.

  • Natural attrition, people will come and go....
  • We also face competition, there's 1000's of people posting content and only 1440 minutes in a day...
  • Some folks might want to hang out where the big upvotes / rewards are...
  • Or maybe they just didn't like their experience, they disagreed with you, what not...

But look at that last point!

They don't feel valued!

They might have spent months on the blockchain and have been posting comments consistently but never even get a response when they take the time to make a comment on your post...

This is what blows my mind. This blockchain can literally become the greatest thing ever created but if we don't make the members of the community feel valued...They'll leave. With a bad taste in their mouth and we'll continue to see trending posts....With 100's in rewards.

And minimal comments on them...

Take the time and make your commenters and followers feel valued! It's that simple.

Hey look, I'm not the smartest guy on the blockchain, that's obvious. In fact, there are a few things I'll never understand about this place...But here's what I do understand. Maybe it's the decades in online business that has helped me understand this point...

When you put people first, you win!

My engagement levels on the blockchain are actually pretty decent if you compare them to traditional social media platforms. I get great engagement from my readers but that's because I feel the LEAST I could do is upvote them and respond to them. It's easy to do, it takes MAYBE a minute of your day....

IMG_1173.jpg

Swap out 'customers' above with followers or readers! This snap shot is again from going over my journals from years past...Did I ever mention that I love journaling???

Make time for them

This doesn't mean you need to spend all day answering the 'awesome post' comments, but just spending a few minutes a day to engage on their blogs too...Might make a world of difference for your journey here!

Listen to them

I read every single comment. From front to back. Because you'll be blown away at the wealth of information and feedback you can get from them. People are awesome! I love to hear what they are saying!

Recognize them

This goes without saying. But when you highlight your followers and let others know about the amazing things they are doing, you have built a loyal follower for life.

Serve them

Ask them what you can do for them. Are they having troubles getting started? Is there something they aren't understanding that you can help them with? See what you can do for them and you'll get more engagement than you can handle :)

Bring out the best in them

I have to shout out guys like @NathanMars (man we miss you!!) who helped me on my journey on the old blockchain to now. He showed me and a lot of us what happens when you bring out the best and encourage others. Stepping out of your comfort zone is hard, but wow....When someone does, it changes everything!

Here's the skinny....

If you want more engagement on your posts...Engage more yourself! Support the people that do comment on your post now and don't get too hung up if it's only 1 or 2 people to start.

Keep engaging them. Keep answering them. And try to follow those tips I just went over...It's changed my approach to engagement on the blockchain and continues to help me on my journey here :)

Just working on improve my "upvote" value. May be, I will enter in 2021 with splendour because of all the work done in 2020.

LOL I hear ya....That's my goal too...Work my butt off now, for the rewards down the road. I think a lot of us here on Hive are still in accumulation mode, and waiting for the pay off when the rest of the world catches on to how awesome we have it here :)

That's a good perspective to have. Let's nudge that "maybe" up a notch to "probably"! ;-)

sure, but few factors depend upon "steem " price that I want to sell and hive price that I want to buy.

Good post, Jon. That graphic - and especially the phrase "perceived indifference" is very useful. Once we can put something into words and images, we can more easily act on it.

"Perceived indifference" is what I'm trying to avoid with my EliteDownlineBuilder subscribers. But it needs to be worked on - continually.

Oh it's never ending man...I mean, all of those things can't be controlled...But what we can, is making sure out customers / readers feel valued. And you can do that on here so easily, blows my mind why folks don't use it more :)

Thanks for this Jon. There were certainly pieces of it that I needed to read to review my own performance. Looking forward to my own progress from it.

As @r1s2g3 said about checking people that upvoted him, I'm doing a similar thing with people that comment on my posts or follow my channel... Go on their blog, check their post and, at least, post a comment on some of their post that I find interesting...

Yeah and I mean there is obviously only 1440 minutes in a day...So we cant be everywhere but that's a good suggestion. We can start there and really 'pull' more engagement to us.

Hey @jonolson, read you on Twitter a little while ago talking about @cptswarm. It sure is refreshing to run into people who strive to add value to the platform. Earlier today I engaged in a conversation with someone about how good content creators are often shrouded behind a whole lot of crappy content. is every post here on hive a GEM?
I'm not going to get into that because I'm in a better mood after reading your post :)

That's what we're really trying to bring to the blockchain....Engaged community members and much more value :)
