What Does Hive Need In 2023?

hiveneed.png

This is scary....

I was driving around town today...Thinking!

Jongo thinking, is never a good thing...

But alas, I started to reflect about all the exciting things taking place on Hive. There's lots of hype around the SPK Network and what they are bringing to the market. One look at what @leofinance is building and you can't help but smile! We've got Liketu, Actifit, Splinterlands....All building their applications and platforms!

Heck, even yours truly and our team at CTP....Always building!

Then comes the problem of onboarding. We all know this is the achilles heel when it comes to bringing more people to Hive. Once people get a taste and learn their way around, it's fine. But getting them here in the first place...Is the challenge.

Some may say marketing is what is needed. And I think that is the job of the individual apps, not so much the blockchain. Like @taskmaster4450 has said on numerous podcasts, you don't buy a Netflix subscription because of AWS and the tech making Netflix work.

So what do we need?

I can't help but think.....

It's more emphasis on mobile applications!

O.k., here's some of the current 'wins' we have on Hive when it comes to mobile:

Ecency

It's the flagship mobile application and front end for the blockchain. It gets a ton of support from the DHF and it's creator a top witness. The mainstay when it comes for a big bulk of the Hive population, using the blockchain every day. I personally would love to see other ways to log into the app, but currently it's a great option!

ActiFit

I think this platform has the biggest potential to onboard the masses. 'Move to earn' is a fantastic idea and you don't need to convince anyone that taking care of their health is a good idea. Same with Ecency, I'd love to see other ways to log into the app.

Splinterlands

Their mobile app is great, but it never seems to be a big focus of their dev team. However, playing games is a fantastic experience in the app.

Other than that, everything else on Hive seems to focus on their front end desktop UI. And I get it....

It comes from the 'Hive is a blogging blockchain' rep we seem to have earned. Now I don't think every app that focuses on their desktop UI feels this way, but if you ask anyone outside of Hive what Hive is known for...They'll say it's a blogging blockchain.

That has to change, and I think a focus on mobile applications would solve this.

Attention: Hive purists...Please turn away now!

This means, content that will thrive here is NOT 500 words or more. It's bite sized content. Snackable content is what we call it in CTP...

i_snackable.png

That's an infographic we developed a few years ago with some recent edits. But the point is, people engage and share snackable, bite sized pieces of content a lot more than long form articles.

What would I love to see in 2023?

Liketu On Mobile

Could you imagine? A REAL blockchain option to Instagram!!! I mean, I love the front end right now and believe this app has HUGE potential to bring more people to the blockchain. But again, purists beware...This means bite sized content incoming!!

3speak on Mobile

An option to create a TikTok-esque app on chain? 3speak is already a superior option to YouTube simply for the fact, SPK is coming lol. But imagine short videos, being able to be uploaded on the go? Game. Set. Match!

Threads on Mobile

I know that the LEO team is always working on a mobile ap. They get it! And if Threads becomes the focus of their mobile application, it truly could become the blockchain version of Twitter!

Veews on Mobile

Maybe, that's in the plans?????

We have so many amazing projects being built on Hive, I truly believe that if the emphasis is on mobile for a lot of them...This would help Hive grow more then we would possibly imagine.

There's for sure a number of great applications on Hive but they all seem the lack the flare and the real draw to bring people into the ecosystem. The only application that really kind of started to bring all of that together was Splinterlands a year ago (I have to be honest splinterlands of 2022 was disappointing on all levels) I'm hoping with the shift back that they get back to what made their entire suite of products awesome.

Every application on hive should in introducing some type of revenue format and a vast amount of that going back to creators and users. There's FAR too much I need money to run my project and dipping into the Hive funds (which I don't even think there should be one) If your building a solid product you dump your heart into it, take risks, invest and promote the F out of it as your focus to make it awesome and profitable. Not to ask for funds from the DAO.

i don’t even know what gets funding vs what deserves funding. the dhf is a great idea but my experience on the blockchain has been improved by a small number of funded projects. #CTP

Invested millions into HP, issued no coins. Self-developed, self funded. It's not flashy VC but it's honest skin in the game with accountability.

However, agreed that every application should have a money spinning model, atleast the goal should be self-sustainability. We have received requests from basically every proposer to support their proposals and have felt quite reluctant to oblige.

It is even more concerning when some of these have been around and the bulk of the work has already been done, yet the proposals keep going up!

As a self-funded project, with significant stake in HP, our interest lies in growing Hive as much as growing ourselves. There's our incentive right there.

Our stake which is basically about 6 or 7 years worth of dilution paid up-front, is simply a tool for us to have skin in the game, and help build engagement, retention, and more users. With more users, we can open up other avenues of revenue (other than our premium locked content feature)

Overall, agree that more scrutiny should be applied to projects receiving or asking for DHF funds.

I'm on the blockchain for over 4 years and I have discovered liketu thanks to @jongolson and I really like it and started to use it with some alt accounts. It would definitely deserve more spotlight :-)

What are your plan for mobile app, I means when we can expect the launch?
So CTP has mobile app developers also in team?

It would be Veews focused for sure. It works great on Keychain browser but a standalone app we think would add value.

Looking at the Apps you mention Actifit and Liketu have more potential for pulling in the masses from my perspective.
Before #movetoearn became a thing Actifit has been the first to this initiative but it has really taken off as expected, I will like to see a push to put Actifit on the faces of people out there that App is the easiest thing to use on Hive.

Liketu, people like photography for Pete's sake, am putting my bet it is going to be a big win with the right exposure.

And if we get LeoThreads out there on mobile then we will be having a non-stop party on Hive in 2023.

I know that threads and such will be powerful in onboarding :) But let's hope there's always a place for longform content too🙏

Oh absolutely!

If long form goes away, I'd be out of job lolol

I just feel there is room for both forms of content on the blockchain.

Agreed, and I love the way Threads are doing it. Personally when I want to do shortform, I don't want it to pop up in my list of posts, or worse yet trigger an autovote 😲. I just want it to sit quietly in the background somewhere, and Threads does this perfectly.

I think SPK delaying may be one of the reasons it would be getting late to jump in mobile traffic. Because tiktok is literally destroying youtube and then with small content easy to consume and hard to compete as they give more revenue to creators. So onboarding on tiktok is easier. I think Hive needs to think of launching SPK soon otherwise the chance is a miss and we can't grow any further.

I hope SPK comes in and those shorts or reels in it would bring in more people to spend on hive.

I think there are a lot of people who underestimate mobile but it's definitely something that has a large user base. It's probably higher than computers and most people have a phone. It will also make things easier for people to get notifications if they want them.

I totally agree with that. I have been saying for a long time that we need some kind of wallet integration with people's Google Play account and their Apple account. I know it isn't that easy because there are all kinds of restrictions by those companies, but if you could just download an app and use your native account like you do any other app for Hive, it would be game changing. I honestly think the first chain that implements something like that is going to be heads above the rest no matter how good the chain actually is. I also think we need more apps. Making your site responsive for a mobile browser is great, but if you have a native app, I am going to be a million times more likely to use your platform.

That's our thinking too. We built Veews to be mobile responsive. But nothing takes away the potential of a native app for your platform.

Mobile applications and a simple account creation process are essential to Hive's growth.
It would be great to have Threads and Liketu with mobile apps, that would attract thousands of users, and of course, there would always be the possibility for those who like longer content to keep posting. I think this would also help the quality of long content because users would not be "forced" to produce longer content to be rewarded.

Completely agree. Always give the people choices. And you would start seeing a lot more people come to the chain if the options were there.

The way these apps are working on hive will make very famous all over the world in coming days. As a actifit it makes a person go on walk daily and it is very good for his health. I have joined liketu a few days ago it is very good there is support for small users. Many people stop using platforms due to bear market which leads to users loss. Hive is strong and trusted platform.

Then comes the problem of onboarding. We all know this is the achilles heel when it comes to bringing more people to Hive.

I agree 100%. I just left a comment about this on @guiltyparties Strategic Vision for 2023 post.

Here were some of my relevant comments:

The onboarding process is still a huge hindrance, imho.

I’ve been talking to @arcange to get some ideas. He provides a paper wallet in PDF form for accounts he helps set up. For my students this semester, I will be doing something similar, but with multiple wallets, separating the Master Password and Owner Key from the other keys.

Incorporating this concept into @hiveonboard or some similar onboarding portal would be great. Every semester I have one or two students who lose their private keys.

In terms of growing awareness of Hive and its usefulness, I sincerely believe HiveAuth is huge in its implications. We just need to get everyday Web2 sites to start incorporating it into their login pages. Idk the best way to make that happen, but showing people that they can use a Hive account and Keychain Mobile to completely eliminate password entry could lead to explosive growth and awareness.

Btw, you left Keychain Mobile off your list of mobile apps. I know you weren’t compiling a comprehensive list, but @keychain is by far the mobile app I use the most.

So true. Keychain mobile is fantastic and I just read their updates that are coming. It most definitely wasn't meant as disrespect, because I use it daily and absolutely love it for using Veews on mobile.

Hey @jongolson thanks for the article!

First off, I completely agree... onboarding and mobile apps are crucial for Hive's growth. Ecency is a solid start, but we need more options to make it easy for newbies to join the party.

That being said, I don't think those things alone will attract the masses to Hive. To really build momentum on this platform, we need to focus on what influencers need and where Hive can stand out. I wrote an article about this here: https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@zwhammer/the-secret-to-growing-the-hive-blockchain-influencers-here-s-how-hive-can-attract-them

TL;DR - we need to create tools that allow influencers to gate their content. Once we have those tools, Hive offers very interesting ways to monetize it through community tokens, NFTs, and crypto/fiat payments. This way, Hive can compete more directly with platforms like Patreon and Skillshare, and influencers will bring their audience to the platform. Over time, this creates a virtuous cycle that attracts more audience and influencers. Just my thoughts, let me know what you guys think. 🤔💡🚀

0
0
0.000
avatar

Yeah I mean we have tipping potential on Peakd right now. And something we are working on with Veews is a way for older content to be rewarded as well. I think those solutions will come for sure!

!CTP

0
0

avatar

To me, it's only partially about the monetization itself in terms of being able to accept payment - it's more about having easy ways to say "This is specifically for my people" And being able to set how that's defined/redeemed - it could be active subscriptions, NFT ownership, staked tokens, etc...

The public/open nature of Hive right now makes it hard to truly gate content - I think we need some sort of encryption to help with that (I'm no dev, so I don't know how that's achieved)

Honestly, some of what I heard on the recent episode of cryptomaniancs (Common - just change it to Hivemaniacs already ;) from @starkerz might be exactly what I'm describing, or at least the foundations for it.

If influencers can bring their community to Hive as a swap for Patreon, there's a ton of benefits - we're just missing a few features that prevent that from making sense.

0
0
0.000
avatar

yup this is exactly where we are heading. as far as i know, the only problem with paywalls, is that it limits the places the content can be stored, so its less decentralised. however, if we can get this to a place where you need a creator NFT attached to your account in order to view content, even if that content is stored in multiple places off chain, that would be incredible.

0
0
0.000
avatar

I love this idea so much. :)

I think I heard with IPFS and Filecoin at least, people could be storing pieces of files they aren't specifically aware they're storing (meaning the specific file) - I wonder if something like this could be leveraged in the SPK network way?

Members of a community can store community assets even if they don't have access to them to view yet... may even be a way to earn access to view etc...

Wow Jon, you may be on to something here. Before Hive, I was always on FB, seemed like my phone was attached to my hand. So if there was more mobile action, I definitely would pick my phone back up and only use my computer for long hand stuff. However, for a lot of people coming to hive, it seems once you say the word 'CRYPTO' they run for the hills. People are just afraid of crypto & the blockchain unless you say it includes BTC, then everybody wants a piece.

Agreed. I have had my most success in onboarding people by including the fact that there is an mobile platform - Ecency - for them to use and take the blogging with them.

Writing a post on this mobile app is not immediately easy, but neither is it too complicated. It does, however, generally require someone to give them some support. Someone they know is better than a stranger.

9 out of 10 times when a person does not know, they do not ask until you ask them if they need help!

Good set of thoughts on how to grow the Hive platform. I think a recovery of prices would help a bit. That would bring the amount of earning up a bit on any of the games and blogging apps. I am not sure where the point would be for earn enough to get mass adoption. Most kids probably get 20.00 a week allowance so 1 or 2 dollars a week will probably not catch their interest.

With a mobile app tons and tons of people can join Hive and enjoy it completely.
