Day 833 - 5 Minute Freewrite - Friday Prompt: bonus

How do you define bonus? To me, bonus means something extra you didn't plan to receive or have on hand to dispense. A surprise. And that's exactly what happened to me this week.

But in order to receive a bonus, something else has to has to happen first. A sort of cause and effect. My story began last week.

While shopping at a discount home goods outlet whose inventory consists of overflow merchandise from high end retall stores, I encountered a familiar situation. I selected numerous household items that I knew I was obtaining at a steep discounted price. At the checkout counter, the clerk was a nice lady, but she charged me twice for an item.

Try as I might, I couldn't communicate with her. I didn't know if she had a speech impediment, so I kindly asked whether another clerk was available. A gentlemen intervened, completed the sale, and handed me the receipt.

Once home, I was engrossed with my purchases, so I didn't notice my receipt. The next day I checked my account and discovered the debit charge hadn't posted. That was unusual, since my debit purchases normally are deducted from my account before I even return home. I thought maybe the clerk entered my transaction as a credit, which takes a couple days to post to my account.

After two days, I realized an error in processing the transaction had occurred. I returned to the store. Requesting to speak with a supervisor, I explained I didn't think the transaction for my purchases was processed. Several employees then huddled in a circle discussing the situation and pointing at me. I felt weird as if I'd done something wrong. Finally, the supervisor accepted my cash and noted "PAID IN FULL" on my previous receipt.

The lady was relieved, as somehow the mistake was counted against her. I think she was attempting to thank me, but communication again prevented it. The nod of her head, smile on her face, and clap of her hands was the universal symbols I interpreted as one of gratitude or appreciation, especially since the mistake totaled $105.72.

My first bonus occurred immediately as the store manager gave me a 10% discount on a future purchase. Now this week, I was one of the winners in two steemit contests. Coincidence for the contests as it relates to my returing to the store to pay for my merchandise? Let's just say they were an added bonus.

It’s funny how things tend to trend in one direction or the other.

Yes, I truly believe so. That's why I always want them to trend in the positive direction. Do Unto Others, my mom used to drill into us. Don't want to be caught in the wrong line when the final judgement comes.

Positivity creates even more positivity... and dark thinking leads to more dark things happening.
Great story and I applaud your honesty and conscientiousness, @justclickindiva! Recently I saw something on TV where people were more likely to call attention to being under-charged if the barista had been nice to them, but if the barista was not particularly pleasant, customers were less likely to report they'd been given too much change. Only a few were scrupulous no matter whether the cashier had been pleasant or not. May such honesty be rewarded! I don't want to believe the truism "No good deed goes unpunished."

Hi @carolkean Thanks for stopping by and viewing my post. Unfortunately, I truly feel that it is true that "no good deed goes unpunished. A person should just do what is right and do unto others as you wish them to do unto you. If everyone adheres to this mandate, then the world would truly be a better place.

Thanks for your kind words. I feel that everytime I do what I feel is right, I do get a blessing of some sort. Blessings don't always have to be of a financial nature. I view health and happiness for myself, my famlily and others to be blessings.

I appreciate your continued support and encouragement. Have a great day, and take care always.

I do see far too much evidence that no good deed goes unpunished, but I also see a lot of good things happening, and paying it forward, and hope flourishing in the darkest places. Thanks and wishing you a great day too!

Wow! That was nice of. If you hadn't gone back to the shop to make corrections, she would have probably been sacked.
Now you've got a real discount that you will enjoy peacefully.

I truly believe so @maxwellmarcusart from the expression on her face. And other clerk told me that they had been discussing what happened for those past 2 days. I think they were in shock I came back. Thanks for your nice words of support and encouragement.

That is honesty to return and pay. I am sure she will never forget you. Congratulations for being this type of person. What a nice bonus. Years ago I encountered this buying 4 chairs and was only charged for three so I went back to pay. God blesses for honesty! Have a wonderful day.

Hello. I've been doing the freewrites for a few years now. I'm beginning to move toward the shorter versions like the ZAPFic Mondays and Fridays. All are a challenge, but that's what I like when time permits.

Thanks so much for stopping by. I appreciate your support.

Take care.
