🌌 Galactic Sheep Selfies πŸ‘ Venomous Snake Bites 🐍 & Other Happenings Of The Day 🌧️

IMG_4401.gif

Our time in Suriname is winding down, so we have been spending time with Harry and trying to jettison some of our belongings before our departure.

Snake Bites Abound 🐍

Β  Β  Β The above shot is taken from our porch, and the little marsh you see in between the neighbor's place and ours is apparently full of aggressive and venomous snakes. The guy that lives in the place is a Cuban refugee, and although our Spanish is terrible, we are able to communicate a bit. We noticed he was missing for four days, and upon his return we asked him where he'd been.

Β  Β  Β "Serpiente" was his response, and he told us an oversimplified version of what happened because he knows our Spanish is limited. This picture is a shot we took of his phone, and that's the snake that put him in the hospital for 4 days. He said it came and bit him while he was busy cooking, a totally unprovoked attack. We were also told it's not the first time he's received a poisonous snake bite since living at this place.

Β  Β  Β The marsh is now a no-go area for the @kidsisters, and we are trying to be more vigilant as well because we can't afford any snake bites before leaving Suriname.

πŸ•΅οΈ Bird-Spying With Monkey-B 🐀

3.JPG

4.JPG

Β  Β  Β Although @sreypov has been the one monitoring the bird nest around the corner more thoroughly than me, I do check on the chicks occasionally. Monkey-B and I popped over to have a look, and we noticed the little guys are fully feathered. We suspect it's a matter of days before they show interest in leaving the nest.

5.JPG

Β  Β  Β They chirp for the return of their parents, but when we peer inside, they immediately go quiet and still, a sign they are much more self-aware than before. I still think watching Monkey-B check in on the chicks is the cutest thing of all.

Work & Play, Striking A Balance 🀹

6.JPG

Β  Β  Β After her studies were finished, Monkey-B dove into one of her favorite hobbies, making doll clothes from scratch using various fabric scraps we have lying around the apartment. She apparently needs half of the apartment's floor space for this activity, so we try to give her a wide berth.

7.JPG

Β  Β  Β Srey-Yuu was busy replying to Hive comments and doing other Hive-related activities. I am still impressed at how much she's learned in such a short time, and once back in Cambodia I will have free time to teach how to manage her crypto independently.

πŸ‘ Stuck Between A Roof & A Wet Place 🌦️

8.JPG

Β  Β  Β Harry the lamb (that plays football) has become so popular with my readers that I feel a need to include him in every post. Today little Harry got stuck in a rainstorm, and he hugged the edge of a shed to stay dry for nearly an hour. His parents graze in the rain happily, but Harry is a true VIP trying to keep his wool fluffy and dry.

9.JPG

Β  Β  Β Harry only has occasional freedom these days, and he's often staked in the backyard for grazing during the day. He's learned how to weasel his way out being staked to a leash many times, and later on in the day he broke free for a surprise visit.

10.JPG

Β  Β  Β Monkey-B has developed a love of podcasts, and now she likes to listen to them while doing other activities. Today she walked 100 meters to take out the trash with her bluetooth headphones on, I think to test the distance she can stray from her iPad before losing a signal.

11.JPG

Β  Β  Β Late in the afternoon we recognized a bleat for help from Harry, and sure enough he was tightly wrapped around a pole and couldn't move. He's not taking well to staked life, so I sent Monkey-B to untangle him, and although I wish we could set him free during the day, it's the landlord's sheep, and not our decision to make.

πŸ‘ Silly Suriname Sheep Selfie 🀳

12.JPG

Β  Β  Β For this reason we decided to stay with Harry for a while and keep him company while his freedom of movement was restricted. My family and I know a thing or two about having our freedom of movement restricted, so I can sympathize with some of the emotional feelings this kind creature has. Harry belongs in Cambodia no doubt, and he would be the hottest ram in town, all the Khmer ewes would vie for his attention.

That is really scary. I can't imagine myself having to encounter with snakes!!! Harry looks so adorable by the way! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°

In Cambodia the snake population in kept in check by a population that knows how to eat everything, so chances are somebody else saw the snake before and it became dinner. However, in Suriname fried chicken and Coca-Cola dominate the local diet, so the snakes are left to live in full freedom. Harry is becoming more popular than me, the landlord should start Harry a Hive account after we leave so we can stay updated πŸ˜†.

Im terrified with the idea of snakes. Would Hive allowed Harry to get an account? Ahahahah. Just like in IG and FB were pets have accounts.

I wish our landlord would do that for Harry, but he is quite happy collecting rent money and spending his days hanging out, I guess that is the ease of being a land owner and landlord. He doesn't need any extra money, and anything that seems like work would be of no interest for him. Harry just needs to sneak into a container ship and make his way to SE Asia 🀫.

You guys having all kinds of exactment there, but that snake situation is really scary! I wonder why your neighbor is having such a bad luck! Poor guy! Anyway, just make sure you are all careful!

Yeah, it's a bit unnerving, but we are mindful, and most of all keep a clean place free of mice and rats, which is honestly a huge challenge considering the state of our apartment and how many holes there are. I know that our neighbor's place is not kept as clean, and I often see rats running around at night over there, so I'm sure the snakes are drawn there in search of prey. Luckily he still has the use of his leg and received anti-venom in before necrotic tissues formed. In Cambodia that would've been almost a sure 100% death sentence.

Oh my gosh! I can't even imagine living like this! But I understand the situation better now. And your neighbor should learn his lesson by now and keep his place clean!!!

Your star kids seem to gel well with pets. I am so scared of animals except for my cat. And that snake was too scary, I would have shouted loud seeing it.

I grew up on a farm so I can very comfortable around many different animals, and even snakes too, but only in the USA where I was born. I know all the snakes where I'm from, and which ones are venomous, non-venomous, aggressive, etc., but when in a foreign land where all the creatures are strange and new to me, it's much more unsettling.

Shame Harry can't go to Cambodia, I think he would be shocked to see the improvement in quality of life both he and us would have. No doubt in my mind the local Khmer ewes would go crazy for him, and I'm sure he'd learn the local sheep dialect quickly πŸ˜€.

yeah too bad about Harry not going to Cambodia, I just hope that if ever someone will rent after you go to Cambodia, they will love Harry just like you do and play soccer with him too.

Ahaha, I sure they'll all get along quickly after knowing even a little of Khmer goat language haha

That would be a best case scenario that would make me very happy. Our Nigerian neighbors feed Harry snacks and give him a little love, but Harry needs the boundless energy of children to keep him entertained certainly.

Our neighbor didn't lose any function in his leg where he was bit, and thankfully his landlord finally put doors on his place to better protect him. He's already faced enough trauma here in Suriname just like my family and I. Things have degraded in Suriname so much that he wants to return to Cuba, but it's not as easy for him as he longer has valid ID. Our upstairs neighbors are Cubans too, and our nextdoor neighbors are Nigerians, and we have all been forced to stay in Suriname years longer than we wished. It's strange how we all ended up here in this small space together, and we try to look out for each other because the locals don't have much compassion unfortunately.

Cambodia is on the horizon, but we've had so many setbacks that I won't believe anything until I hug my family again in Cambodia. I am really let down with all the politicians, bureaucrats, borders, and governments that are responsible for the destruction of so many families during this pandemic.

I for one would be happy to hit the reset button and start the world over again without borders and governments, but I'm a bit idealistic.

I love this post seeing those rural areas you live in. The setting is exactly the same as in a Philippine countryside away from the city. Glad your days are numbered in Suriname, you will have it very good in Cambodia and your life will be much much better there.

The kidsisters will surely miss Harry, how I wish you could also bring him to where you are going. When we had our rottweiler named Ako, we put him in a cage and transported him in the plane where ever we went. Our rottie was a traveller who accompanied us during house hunting in Tenerife, Malta, Cyprus, Andalusia. I am sure Monkey B will find another pet where ever you are going to and I wish your prospective "Biologist" so much luck!

It does seem so rural here, but we are within the city limits of the capital of Suriname, and locals would call this area a suburb. It feels like the countryside though because the locals like space the houses far apart from one another, and each person owns a big piece of land. In Cambodia people own less land, build houses smaller and closer together, and there is designated village chief in every area across the country, and this helps to form a sense of community. Here in Suriname we have felt like it's us against the world since day one, an eye-opening experience for my family indeed, and a brutal taste of the western mentality.

I wish we could take Harry with us, but we've been fighting for three years just to get ourselves out of Suriname with no luck. We just aren't in a financial situation where that is an option. The cost of flying Harry to Cambodia from Suriname would be enough money to lift a Cambodian family out of poverty, so I have a problem with that too.

Luckily animals are drawn to us wherever we go even though it's never an ownership situation, I think it's even cooler to form a bond with an animal with no food or captivity involved. I once had a cat enter my room in Cambodia and choose my place as the right destination to birth her kittens. I only gave her water and told her apologies for choosing a vegan house, and that I had nothing to offer her to eat. For whatever reason she stuck around for about 4 weeks before collecting her kittens and moving on.

Hopefully Monkey-B can find ways to keep pursuing her study of animals in Cambodia.

I am sure Monkey B will find her way to get what she wants in the process of her growing up. In the meantime, what she is into only proves she loves animals and an inclination towards her future of being near them, goes to show that we might be lucky if she chooses the right path of becoming a vet or biologist. Yeah, I am sure too that Harry will leave a fond memory in Monkey BΒ΄s heart which is one of her fondliest experiences during her childhood days in Suriname.

Thank you for this comment, I agree. Harry has been a blessing to our family, and he often comes for a visit at the perfect time to cheer us up. He will live in our hearts forever, and we will always wonder how he is doing from across the world in Cambodia.

Monkey-B and Harry playing together are probably the fondest memories we will have a Suriname. It seems there's a chemical for everything in Suriname, and the other day we saw a guy whom our landlord said was spraying snake repellent. I have never heard of snake repellent before, but a guy walked all over the property and sprayed it from a backpack just like herbicide.

I firstly enjoyed watching your galactic picture. Hahaha.. it is scary to imagine having snakes. I think it must have been pretty scary for your neighbour.

In Sarawak, it's crocs. They can appear anywhere. In the drain. At beach sides.

Harry is gonna be missed also by your readers once ur leave this wonderful Suriname. Hahah... Wow.. this is the first time I've seen birdnest not on a tree. How are the baby birds? Podcasts are a great way to learn new things though visualization. When I was working in Brunei some years ago, on my way there everyday ( an hour from where I am), I would listen to audio story books. Makes the trip great.

Now that you mention it, I should turn them onto audiobooks. I have a stash of children's audiobooks somewhere on a flash drive, a lot of Roald Dahl if I remember correctly. Crocs, that's serious business, here in Paramaribo there are only caimans we have to watch out for, but they are generally scared of humans.

Well, yes and no, I'm going to the USA for 2 to 6 weeks depending on whether or not Christmas/New Year prevents me from getting a decent ticket price. After the family does a 7-day quarantine on arrival, my wife has about two weeks of errands to run, and then she'll be free. She would like to hire a minivan to take her and all some friends all over Veal Veng to scout land and make friends, get phone numbers, etc.

She'll also explore Pramaoy, the nearest town, for a rental room or apartment which we can use as a basecamp while we search for land. Give thanks my friend.

I love every bit of this post. It's happy and super sad at the same time. How can we all live without Harry? I am full of heartache already. How will Harry live without you guys? Yet I can't wait to see you all reunite in a land free of vicious snakes and cool hearted folks. That is a deal breaker. Not that everything else you've endured isn't.

Anyway good that you try to keep the moral up with your wit and saving the real stuff from the kids. Before you know it, you'll all be back in Kansas. There's no place like home.

Thanks for the encouragement, I can't wait to be in a tuk-tuk with the family exploring the countryside for our future homesite. Ideally we'll have a small rental room or apartment in the nearest town-type place with a fruit-veg market, and we'll take daily trips searching for Shangri-La. And of course we'll be sharing the process with Hive.

Viva La Harry!!

Funny you mention that, after I finished it I kind of felt some NFT inspiration. I'm not a natural artist in any way, so when I try to intentionally make art, it's never worked. We will definitely leave our ball behind for Harry to play, but he'll have to have a playmate.

Well this Galactic Sheep Selfies did worked great! 😁😁

We will definitely leave our ball behind for Harry to play, but he'll have to have a playmate.

I am a little bit sad for Harry tho, when I was a child my grandpa raised cattle and they live around our house. My grandpa give me one calf for me to take care of and I did name him as Gasung. I grew up with him for 2 years and I was really attached to him. But if you remember that time around 1998-2000 when the El-Nino and La-Nina phenomenon strikes. We have a very hot and dry season here in Malaysia, we had to gather foods for the cattle because all the grasses around our house have dried out and only dirt was left.

Some of our cattle died during that time. Only a few survived and become very thin, this include Gasung. At that time I was struggling to keep him healthy as long as I can. But then one day, my grandpa decided to sell him, I was really sad, he was my friend during those 2 years time. But I did know it from the start that this time will come, but I did not know it will hurt that much.

But I believe for Harry and you guys, you had a lots of great memories together 😁😁

Harry is quickly turning from a lamb to a man-ram, but luckily still cute for now.

I guess it was some serious "anti-venemo," but not sure the species that caused. This is the Amazon, so pretty much everything is deadly except parrots. My wife says Cambodians would eat nature into submission if allowed to live in the Amazon, and I think that's right.

Funny short story, a famous Amazonian herbal medicine man came to our place with a mutual friend, and he's a busy man, people pay him thousands of dollars for "healing" from all around the world. We walked around our property and he pointed out various plants and their uses, and my wife and I knew 95% of the plants and their uses too, although this isn't even a place we know much about.

I guess it shows a genocide and a country where half the people hid in the forests for 20+ years produces a country full of people with the herbal knowledge of an Amazonian healer.
