πŸšͺ Our Fence Is Finally Coming To Fruition 🧱 Privacy Is On The Horizon πŸ•΅οΈ

fence.png

It's been in the works for a long time, but finally our fence project is beginning to take shape, and posts are going in the ground.

Where'd The Water Go? 🏜️

river.png

Β  Β  Β It hasn't rained for several weeks, even way up in the mountain peaks there hasn't been any rain, so the sound of rushing whitewater is gone and has been replaced by a quiet trickle in a mostly dry riverbed. It is wild to see the changes this river goes through in a year, from carrying full trees at breakneck speed to hosting little pools of dying fish, life is extreme.

Fence Posts In The Ground πŸͺ΅

fency.png

vfvfvf.png

Β  Β  Β My brother-in-law and my wife's brother-in-law are back and working on the fence again. This time progress is faster than before, and I can now begin to imagine what the finished project might be like. We haven't had a sense of privacy since we began living here, but that is not the most important reason for building the fence. We aim to list our cabin in Airbnb, and eventually we'd like to buy some mini cabins and possibly convert to a boutique resort. Without a fence some guests don't feel safe, and it will also provide a nice barrier to the daily village drama that guests won't want to see or hear.

vrtyui.png

Β  Β  Β Above is the edge of our property, and our neighbor has built her house within inches of the property boundary, so it certainly makes a tight squeeze. This neighbor is notorious for encroaching, and she has already constructed a bathroom and buried a signpost into her other next-door neighbor's yard while he was out of town. At the moment the homeowner's daughter and husband are living in the house of this neighbor without his permission, so you can imagine why we have prioritized this side of the fence more than the highway side.

Little By Little πŸ‘·

ffretyuiop.png

Β  Β  Β Our land is very uneven and rocky, so it has been a challenge digging the holes and also gauging the slope. We will used a stepped design when we connect the posts with what will likely be a mix of bamboo and wood, so there is no need to worry about trying build a level fence in such mountainous terrain.

vfvfvfvfvfvfvf.png

Β  Β  Β One thing our daughters have learned is that when construction is going on they are free to avoid daily chores because Pov and I are just too busy to remind them to do the things they are supposed to do. Monkey-B has been playing for several days right after school as her room gets progressively messier.

The Last Easy Pole πŸ—οΈ

cdccccccccccccc.png

Β  Β  Β In the above you can see the river and the last fence post before the beginning of the hill or cliff. It seems to steep to be a hill and too climbable to be a cliff, seems there should be an English word for something in between πŸ€”. After this post things will get more difficult, but we are going to attempt to place several fence posts on this slope because our neighbor throws her trash behind her house and occasionally sets fire to the pile. This isn't exactly what potential guests want to see when visiting a wildlife sanctuary within a national park, so I hope we can obstruct the view a bit.

Broom Grass Harvester 🧹

freetyu.png

Β  Β  Β For the last image of the day, I was cooking dinner and spotted Nim outside the window with a bunch of broom grass. When dried it will likely fetch up to 50 cents, and although the grass is easy to pick, it takes a long time to collect a large bundle. I am always reminding Srey-Yuu of how much more she can earn on Hive and how much easier she can earn it versus how the local kids in the village hustle up some money. I have spent large amounts of my time and efforts teaching our children skills for the future, and I can only hope that they will thank me one day instead of despise me. Well, that's most dads' dream I guess, and that's all for today folks.....

I can't wait to not wake up to random strangers sleeping on our land, it will certainly make my wife and daughter feel safer when I can't be here.

That looks like a good high fence! With luck you won't be able to see your neighbour at all once it's finished.

I hope so, it will be much of a drama border than a fence on that side of the property.

Money isn't the ultimate goal, a person can be much happier if their source of sustenance is something they enjoy, even if it pays less. My advice is to remember that and always respect your children's approaches to life, that way they won't despise you.

I speak from personal experience as I still hold resentment against my father for being so insistent (to the point of aggression) on leading me on the path of what was financially "safer" rather than pursuing my true dreams and passions.

I'm grateful today that I broke away from that and live the life I've dreamt of, with it's pros and cons, but much happier than I was when I lived under my father's advice.

Anyway, we're all different, just sharing something that might be useful in your parenting. Much success on your boutique resort!

I totally agree, I am a bit of a rebel myself, and I kind of went my own may in life. That is kind of the main reason I am trying to so hard to get her to learn how to be financially independent before she's 18. In Cambodia it is all too common for a women to get married at a very young age because not many women are taught how to be independent from a man's income, and all too often it leads to unhealthy marriages and a broken home.

Hopefully if we can finish our project boutique bed and breakfast idea, this will be another potential source of income for them.

The progress looks awesome. I'm sorry you have such an evilish neighbor, let's hope your fence is ready before she come claim your land.

There's no words between hill and cliff. Let's just call it a slope(add steepness to emphasize or dramatise), at least that's what we Malayinglish does. Eg.

  1. That slope ar, can walk up no plobrem
  2. That slope ar, u need hand hold tree only can climb
  3. That slope ar, very steep lo! U need rope and climbing shoe

Something like that 🀣

The words "slope" and "embankment" seem to have disappeared from my vocabulary through the years. Thanks for English lesson teacher, haha. I am always reminded of how weird my English has become the first couple of weeks every time I visit the USA, it's only then I realize how many words I've lost by only speaking Engrish in Cambodia for so long.

Wow, this is great sr! Congrats for you had just started your project. That was my dream too to construct a fence in my humble house for safety. Praying to starts the project this year.

Wood is very affordable in our area, but concrete, bricks, and sand are very expensive because they must be hauled up the mountain, so it has been a slow build, only doing what we can afford in small stages. I can't wait to see it finished, and hopefully you'll share your fence with us when the time comes.

As expected, it took longer than expected, but that is the way of doing things in Cambodia. I will be even happier when we put rails on the fence, then we'll have some real trespasser barriers.

It is really good to put up a fence to your home. Aside from keeping the privacy for your family, it is also good to avoid neighbors from taking advantage of the space that's supposed to be your property. And it's one of the reasons why people would always love to build up their fences, to set boundaries.

Ideally everyone would be a good neighbor, and we could live without boundaries, but because their customers are always peeing on our land, and they litter and burn trash everywhere, it will prevent any chance of us running a successful bed and breakfast. All too often I've walked outside in the morning to see a stranger with his πŸ† out peeing next to our cabin, so inappropriate.

what you wrote I have observed and I have lived, regarding the fence that you have built, it seems that you do not get along with your next-door neighbor because he often makes things that are not clear,,, but I do not want to discuss that problem because I do not know exactly what has happened to you with your neighbor,,,

it's true what you said, if the fence that you have built so far looks like the poles are already towering and standing, of course, all of them have been cast about the fence posts ... it seems that in the next few days you will start to be able to lay bricks ... if we are one country and we are neighbours, of course I will take my time to help you in laying bricks ...

but what is clear is that I don't know exactly what you will put there, whether bricks or just zinc ... because long ago you told me about making this fence but you didn't explain if this fence would be tied with bricks or installed with zinc

what is clear is that I will be waiting for the next episode about the story of making the fence ... for you my friend @justinparke I hope you are always healthy .....

We have found a cheap source of Chinese bamboo, so I think we will put three rails between the fence posts and then try to weave the bamboo in between the rails for more privacy. We have very extreme winds here, and I am afraid to put any barrier on the fence that will not allow some air to pass through, so woven bamboo seems to be a good choice. πŸ‘ŠπŸ™

That fence is coming along nicely. Love seeing the progress with it.

And yeah, it is every parent's hope that we're teaching the kids something useful. Some days are certainly better than others.

Well, I guess if we parents think we are constantly doing a near perfect job, the chances are we are probably not πŸ€”.

"...seems there should be an English word..."

For a steep bit of land rising from a river (or road), I would simply call it an "embankment" (or "bank" for short). So, you climb up the bank to return from the river. And it is a steep one, too! I can easily see why SreyPov was working on steps with bamboo stalks a while back! I can't imagine how difficult it will be to put fence posts there, but I see why you'd want it, with the neighbor's trash habits.

The posts for the fence look fabulous! That is certainly quite a bit of progress from the last fence update! Whoo hooo! πŸ˜ƒ In all the photos of your property in the past, though, I don't recall seeing that sweet little shrine /"spirit house" mounted on the postΒ β€” is that new? Or was it just hiding in previous shots? Or maybe I'm just blind? 😜

Thanks to you and Dave in the comments, the words "slope" and "embankment" have re-entered my vocabulary. Years and years of speaking Engrish have limited my vocab, but I it all comes back after a few weeks in the USA. The little spirit house always been there, but perhaps because it's in the corner of the property, it rarely makes it into photos.
