How Much is My Coin Worth? 20 Drachma - 1973

avatar

Today I had this crazy thought.
What if I start creating a catalog of my coins and research their value?
I am writing it first here, on hive, because I would like to ask the advise of @trumpman and of course if any of you have more ideas, please share!

I remember when I was little, my dad had kept some coins and he called me one day to give them to me. I don't remember much, but I have saved them always at a hidden spot and never forgot to take them with me at all my new homes. (Please note that since I was a kid I have changed 10 houses since I was a little one)

It turns out that I have enough coins to keep me busy for quite some time.

I plan to write them down, research their value and find a safe way to store them.
I will also search to see what is the best way to highlight them and to clean them. For some of them it is very difficult to see their details.

I thought of taking my coin out for a photoshoot and I really hope that you enjoy both the photos and the information provided.

About the Coin

It first circulated in 1973 in Greece. One side has Goddess Athena and the name of the creator (Perantinos)

The other side depicts a phoenix riding from a fire.
It will be interesting to research the history of the coin a little more.
We should keep in mind that during the time that this coin circulated, we had dictatorship in Greece.

More information

The coin's obverse features the Greek goddess Athena. Athena was Athen's patron and also the goddess of courage, wisdom and inspiration. On the coin she is depicted wearing a helmet.

Apparently, it is not considered a highly valuable coin, however it is considered popular among Greek collectors.

What about the price?

I have found it in websites being sold for 1.76 euros and over. I suppose that the price depends from the quality of the coin. This one is made of copper-nickel so to be honest I do not know how much this material is worth.

I have a few more coins, let's see what treasures I shall discover!

Thank you for visiting!

Appendix

I asked BING and this is what its response was very accurate so I would like to post it here below.

Sure, I can tell you what I know about the 20 drachma coin created in Greece in 1973. According to the Bank of Greece¹, this coin was part of a new series of coins that were put into circulation after the abolition of monarchy in 1973. The coin was made of copper-nickel and had a diameter of 29 mm and a weight of 11 g². The coin depicted Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, on one side and a phoenix, a mythical bird that symbolizes rebirth, on the other side². The phoenix was also a symbol of the Regime of the Colonels, a military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974². The coin was demonetized in 2001 when Greece adopted the euro as its currency².

Asking about its value:

The value of the coin today depends on its condition and rarity. According to Numista¹, a website that provides information on coins and allows users to exchange them, the coin can be worth between $0.53 and $2.00 in different grades of preservation. However, these values are based on evaluations by Numista users and sales realized on Internet platforms, and they serve as an indication only. They are not intended to be relied upon for buying, selling or exchanging. Numista does not buy or sell coins or banknotes. According to NGC², a company that provides coin grading and certification services, the coin can be worth between $0.30 and $2.00 in different grades of preservation. However, these values are based on data provided by Active Interest Media’s NumisMaster, and they may not necessarily reflect NGC’s official opinion or policy. NGC makes the World Coin Price Guide available to its website visitors as a free service, but in no way does the information provided represent NGC’s official opinion or policy. According to uCoin.net³⁴, a website that provides information on coins and allows users to create their own collections, the coin can be worth $1.84. However, this value is based on an average price from several sources and may not be accurate.
