Coins from the 14th Century

Hi, I'm sick again. I'm 11. I have a cough, a cold, a headache... So that I'm not always on my cell phone, when my dad comes home from work, he shows me coins from his collection. Dad tells me how long it took someone to earn such a coin, what could be bought with it...

These are Prague Grosses from the 14th century. The Grosses were minted between 1300 and 1547. The Grosses weighed about 3.5 g. They were silver with a grain size of 833/1000. Over time, however, its quality declined.

I can't read what's written on them. But dad can do it. Coins says:"CAROLUS PRIMUS, DEI GRATIA REX BOEMIE, CAROLUS" and "IOHANUS PRIMUS, DEI GRATIA REX BOEMIE". This means that these Grosses were minted during the reigns of John of Luxembourg, 1310 - 1346 and Charles IV, 1346-1378. On the other side is written:"GROSSI PRAGENSES"

These coins were valid for a long time. And they weren't minted very carefully. That's why they are very worn.

An unskilled worker earned less than a penny a day in the 14th century. The master earned 2 - 5 groschen.

Food prices fluctuated a lot in the Middle Ages, depending on the harvest. You could buy about 1.5 kg of bread for a Gross, a chicken for 1-2 Grosses, a cow for 20-60 Grosses...

The higher prices were not counted in Grosses, but in piles (60 pieces) of grosses. A farm and a house in the city cost around 20 piles of grosses.

It follows that even in the Middle Ages it was necessary to stacken!

Bylo to stříbro o kvalitě 833/1000 (stříbro/obecný kov).

Táta ale umí latinsky i číst gotické písmo. A tvrdí mi, že tam stojí: "CAROLUS PRIMUS, DEI GRATIA REX BOEMIE, CAROLUS" and "IOHANUS PRIMUS, DEI GRATIA REX BOEMIE."

Ty mince platily dlouhou dobu. A nebyly ražené příliš pečlivě.
