Every country has different norms on when children should leave their parents' house. Before I write about the topic, let's see about education first, because education has a strong relation to self-reliance.

In Indonesia, children should have 12 years of education. It is the minimum requirement of employers to accept new workers.

Primary School Children

Here is the order of education in Indonesia.

  • Kindergarten - 1 year
  • Primary school - 6 years
  • Junior school - 3 years
  • Senior or vocational school - 3 years
  • Diploma - 2-3 years
  • University - 3-4 years
Children will start entering primary school at the age of 6 or 7. When they finish senior or vocational school, they will be 18–19 years old.

During the 12 years of education, children still live with their parents. Parents bear their children's school fees and living expenses. If there are children who have to live in the dormitory because the school is far from home, the parents still have to supply all the needs of the children.
After graduating from high school or vocational school, children should attend university or get a job.Children who graduate from vocational school typically find work as laborers in factories or businesses in cities. Some of them become urban people.

Most children who have got jobs still live with their parents. Their daily lives still rely on their parents' expenses. Their salary or income is still for their personal needs, like buying gadgets or motorcycles. Children who have a large salary will usually give some of their money to their mother for their daily needs. Children who become urban workers will live separately from their parents.

Children who have a large salary will usually give some of their money to their mother for their daily needs. For children who work outside the city, they will return to their parents' house every month, three months, or even once a year.

On the other hand, children who continue to university still get living expenses and school fees from their parents. Children who can enter university usually come from middle and upper-class families. So naturally, parents spend a lot of money for their children to university.
After graduating from a diploma or university, the child will be between the ages of 21-23. They will work and get married. Some of the children who work. Where their workplace is not far away, they still live with their parents.

Conclusion

Children should finish 12 years of education. Some of them go to work. Children who go to universities still get their living expenses and education fees from their parents. If the distance between their workplace and home is long enough, some working children will live apart from their parents. Most children who have got married will leave their parents' house and live with their new families. Most young people will get married starting at 18 to 35 years old.

I think I would have done much better with more independence. 18 was late for me 🤣 I don’t know anyone in the US who lives on their own before 18 though. It’s not economically sustainable, but actually I think young people should have a chance to work for a year or two before University.
