Splinterlands Share Your Battle Weekly Challenge - Haunted Spider

Introduction

Hi, it's me once again posting my experience as part of my participation in the Splinterlands SHARE YOUR BATTLE Weekly Challenge. This time, the card the challenge has highlighted is the Haunted Spider.

If you're wondering what is Splinterlands or not familiar what this game is all about, Splinterlands is a collectible trading card game running on blockchain technology, particularly the Hive blockchain. If you've seen Magic: The Gathering cards before, this game will be somehow similar, especially because has its influences from MTG. You can sign-up and play Splinterlands here.

The Card

Haunted Spider is a common card from the Alpha/Beta pack. It is a ranged monster and part of the Death Splinter. At Level 4, Poison ability is added as its ability.

Pros and Cons

Haunted Spider is a low-cost mana creature. For me, spending 3 mana to summon a monster with 3 health and 2 range attack is well-spent. This makes Haunted Spider a good part of your team when battling with low mana battles. It is also a good option on a Little League ruleset, where cards are limited to 4 mana or less.

However, its speed is just 1 and one should be careful when placing it at the back row because it may be subject to early attacks and die just even before it can do its first strike.

General Strategy

My strategy for this battle is to kill the opponent's tank monster as early as possible. The five most recent team selections that the opponent use were the Death Splinter and it was obvious that the tank monster will always be Haunted Spirit. There are a couple of things to consider in this instance. First, that the Haunted Spirit can heal itself and the second thing is, the summoner of choice is Zintar Mortalis which will reduce my monster's melee attack by 1.

Please read below as to how I plan to counter that.

The Lineup

Summoner - Zintar Mortalis

  • Slot 1 - Undead Rexx
  • Slot 2 - Undead Priest
  • Slot 3 - Haunted Spider
  • Slot 4 - Undead Archer
  • Slot 5 - Furious Chicken
  • Slot 6 - N/A

To counter the team that my opponent is most likely to use, I decided to deploy a Death Splinter team too. For my tank monster, I usually use Haunted Spirit too, for its heal ability. But it's low melee attack, and its possible reduction should my opponent use Zintar Mortalis again, the card won't be able to do a quick kill for my opponent's tank monster. It is for that reason that I used Undead Rexx for my tank monster. Even if my opponent use another Death Splinter team again and reduced Rexx's melee attack, he will still have 4 attack damage.

Assuming my opponent's tank monster is Haunted Spirit again, I can kill that monster in spite of its heal ability since I will be using Undead Priest as my second monster, which will reduce its health by 1. Then, to provide additional attacks from the back is Haunted Spider. Its 2 ranged attack will secure my second round kill of the enemy's tank monster.

To seal the fate of the enemy's tank monster demise, I also used Undead Archer in the hope of it preventing any heal ability on the opponent that it attacks. Overall, my team can be a bit slow and it will allow the enemy to attack first, so I deploy Furious Chicken to be the sacrificial lamb for the Snipe and Opportunity monsters that the opponent team may use.

Lo and behold, the opposing team suddenly changed its strategy and used the Fire Splinter instead. I was worried that it will use Living Lava instead and to be honest, I am not that sure if my same strategy will work on the monster. Good thing the team chose Cerberus as its tank monster, which to me is a toned-down version of Haunted Spirit. I just hope my team will survive all the attacks as I know that speed-wise, the opposing team has the advantage.
