Book Review

I am not good at Bengali writing, and my type of speed is horrible. But as a Bengali, I have immense love and respect for my country, of course, for the Bengali language. When I was young, I always love to read all those poems and stories from the textbook. Still, when I have some time, try to read some storybooks, novels. And I had a great time.

Name of the book: Drunken Air (মাতাল হাওয়া)

Name of the writer: Humayun Ahmed

Category of the book: Novels

Publisher of the book: Onno Prokash

Date of first publish: February 2010

You can get acquainted with a strange breeze if you can get to the roof before the storm. Where this wind comes from, is not understood! Different from time to time! Then I think of someone very close to you! I think if that person was by my side, many words could be shared.

And this messy breeze is drunken air. I have seen it many times!!

In my Leisure time, the book is the only companion to me. The new book I have read is Humayun Ahmed's drunken breeze/air.

1968-69 political fervor and personal experience of the author all together these stories about. All in all, it was a great feeling. One of my favorite characters is Himu. In this book, Rupa has been created as her heroine. Besides, the book can be read in two ways, one is about the days of author Humayun's hall, the other is Criminal Lawyer Habib and his daughter Nadia (Tojalli).

The two stories are combined here because Nadia and the writer are batchmates. Besides, there are some enchanting characters like Hasan Raja Chowdhury, Farid, Padma. Mystery and can be seen in some of the characters! There is a father-daughter caress, hidden love, political riots, injustice. Who are from this generation, they may not know much about 1969 situation. We can know about those things!

In the end, a kind of frustration worked. Again it is also a cruel truth, a girl is never safe in her own family. All in all, a different feeling is working, this is a drunken air!!

Nah! You don’t need analysis. Analysts are overrated! ;)

I don’t know if you read the preface of this book or not. I often don’t, but since Humayun Shaheb is one of my fav authors... I read everything he writes. He wrote an interesting thing at the preface. He said that one of the biggest problem of writers are that they can’t ignore “time”. So when they start writing about past .. they often reach out to history books!

So true!

Aren’t we all reaching out to history books?

Did you know I met Humayun once.. bhari addabaz lok chilen. Amra onake chirokaal Sunil - Sokti contemporary bole mone korechi. Cha yer cup e tufan tola kothata Jana aache to? He was big into that kind of adda.

Sottor er doshok... bhari obak somoi. Naxalite movements.... chiner chairman ... amader chairman... jani na ei slogan tomra sunecho kina:)

Fast forward many years. Where is China now today :)

World is a bizarre place.. isn’t it?

Your mention of the book brought back many fond memories. This is one of his later works. I read it almost right after it was published. We sometimes get Bengali books in Houston, too. Especially famous authors. During festivals and stuff, we sometimes have stalls and Bengali Publishers arrive with books.

I am happy that this book brought back your old memories. Sometimes when I don't have any idea, I read books or watch movies. It gives me pleasure and more ideas to innovate myself. Nowadays, people also download all those books online and read them. But I love to read them offline as I love the smell of new books. So you are now in the USA? Good to hear that you can get some Bengali books in your place.

dada inshallah ekdin apnar sathe dekha hobe , oidin eksathe bose cha khabo r jompesh adda hobe...

Sure.. and in the meantime, we can continue to have the weekly voice chat. We have to direct it slowly towards a proper adda... as opposed to Q & A.
