I Had To Jump Through A Few Hoops To Create Another Account On Hive.

In this day and age simplicity is key or people give up quickly.

Untitled design (82).jpg

I have some future plans with another account using Hive that has nothing to do with what I do on this account so I thought it would be better to set up a second account to work with. I have been on the blockchain for over two years now and I would say I am no expert but I do know a good deal about using Hive and several of the dapps. With that being said I went to working on setting up my new account, first going to hiveonboard.com and there was the message below on the site.

I know that creation tickets have been a problem for a while but I wanted to go through the steps as if I was new to the blockchain and see how hard it is to get an account set up. To keep moving forward with the process I click on the link in the notice for signup.hive.io for more options. There were seven options that you can see below, the first one being the Hiveonboard.com where we just came from.

There are three free options and four paid options to choose from, I would say the average person is not going to pick one of the paid options so I started on the next of the free options being Ecency. Ecency.com/signup? looked simple enough, just fill in the form information and click on continue. For some reason I couldn't get the site to continue, I did log in with my account to make sure it was working and there was no problems at all. This could be a problem with no onboarding tickets or even just my browser not letting it work properly. Ecency is a great program and they are doing good things with Hive so I am not saying anything negative about the site, I just wasn't able to move forward with the sign up process.

Then next option was 3Speak, I am intending on doing a lot of video's with my new account so this is a good option to work with anyway. Signing up to 3Speak was pretty quick and easy, I had to verify my email and boom, my account was created. The only thing that draw back that I saw with using 3Speak to sign up was that you need to get your keys from a one time email that you have to request. Someone not knowing much if anything about the blockchain may not know how serious this step is so I think 3Speak is a good option but for the newb this could pose an issue.

I guess my point is that I was able to figure all this out pretty quickly but it took a lot of steps that many people these days would get quickly frustrated with and not follow through. Simplicity is key and it would be awesome if there was a sure way that was a crazy simple process to make an account on Hive. I'm not a programmer so I have no idea what the easy answer is, I am just ranting about the current process and wishing it was easier for new people to onboard to Hive.

From where I see it I think the onboarding process of hive currently is much better and easier than back then on steemit.
Had to wait for about 3 weeks to get verified and get my keys, a little bit different now tho.

There's no doubt that the onboarding process is different than it was before, but I definitely believe there's room for improvement in the future.

Ecency was a easiest way to get onboard before, didn't know what happened to them.

I agree with you it is way better then it used to be, and I'm sure down the road something will come along to simplify the process.

Not sure why Ecency didn't work for me, it could have just been something at the moment or even something with my browser, they are doing some pretty solid work over there.

3Speak worked fine but the extra step of requesting your keys could be a problem for people not knowing about them.

Yeah onboarding people is not easy i have heard that leofinance is working on a way through twitter so that could be good. Peakd has a referral link for onboarding people also.
Have the best day @maddogmike

Onboarding has come a long way from what it once was and I know that there are people working on it so hopefully the problem will have a good solution at some point. I forgot about peakd, I should have went there after I saw hiveonboarding was out of credits. Thanks for reminding me about peakd I will remember that now.

Yeah absolutely i think it is just a matter of time before it is solved.
I think peakd is probably the best option at the moment it has badges for referring people too i noticed today.

The onboarding and easy signup process were always one of the main obstacles to growth... I would say that's the case in other industries too, where you have some new products, innovative technologies, etc... As someone said in the comments, the onboarding process is better than it was before, but still, it needs always improvements to make it as simpler as possible...
As old HIVE users, we are used to seeing things not working, experiencing glitches, but new users don't know that that can happen and that those things are mostly temporary...

The solution isn't to educate others to get used to problems, but to fix the issues and make things better... ;)

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project and it will be highlighted in the next post!

I agree completely, it is better then before and I know it will be even better then it is now. A lot of people aren't going to take the time for any problems or work arounds they just wont sign up so a permanent solution would be a great asset to the blockchain. One of the other comments here reminded me of using Peakd also, I had forgotten about this option or I would have tried it. Peakd could be a good option that is more consistent then some of the others. Thanks for picking my post for one of today's reading selections.

I think this is a much needed post, as there is a lot of confusion about Hive account creation, I created one on Splinterlands and had no clue I had done so :-)

There are a few options but the reality is it needs to be stupid simple, especially for new people who don't know anything about the blockchain. If I had a little difficulty imagine someone new who knows nothing about the blockchain.

I know it will be better eventually because it has come a long way from where it was a few years ago. At least now you can get an account in a matter of minutes compared to the days or weeks it used to take.

Thanks for sharing this information. I had totally forgotten about all the various options there are to set up an Hive account. I would probably always opt for the free options because I do not understand why you would want to pay for something when you could get it for free. Do you know if there are extra benefits from those providers if you pay them?

I would always take the free route also. The only benefit I know if is not having to use your phone or email to verify your account, otherwise I don't think there is an advantage to paying.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experience with this Mike, I still have some account tickets in my own account, and to be honest I also think it would be a fantastic idea to make those tickets transferrable, then you could even have a market for them, and highly encourage people to claim them, and as you said signing up to Hive for a newbie needs to be easy and safe without any traps like that clear text email, enjoy your day and stay awesome.

People don't have patience and will give up quickly if it isn't easy as can be. Onboarding has come a long way over the last few years but it still has room for improvement. I think developers have a different outlook on what is easy or not compared to the average person, hopefully they will figure something out in the near future.

Yeah the fact is it got easy with Hive Onboard, but then they ran out of account tickets, so I think that is what needs to be addressed first by making them transferrable, have an awesome weekend.

Thank you for sharing this experience Mike. I can't remember where I signed up when I started the @my1440 account and I don't recall having any issues getting onboarded. I may have I just don't remember. The onboarding process might seem daunting to new people so it is good to get a newbie perspective.

Yes, that is the point that new people coming onboard will have problems and may not sign up if it is to many steps or if they don't understand it. We have been here for a while so we look at it different knowing that there is a way and we just need to figure it out, many wont take the time.

Yeah, that's true and also what I have to improve on. Learning how to explain things and assuming the person to whom I am explaining has no prior knowledge. Hope your week is starting out great! 😀
